Can you turn the fan so it will not blow on cabinet at top?

My old microwave has a front vent and it seems most of the new ones vent at top. I do not like the idea of the air blowing on my cabinet. I was told the fan could be turned but how will that help if it is vented at top anyway?

Answer:
The vent angles out at about a 45 degrees so it doesn't blow directly upwards but outwards a bit. When we installed it we also put a spacer in behind it so it's out from below the upper cabinet as well. I didn't like the though of this either but it's hard to find a new microwave that's vented out the front.

If you vent to outside the house, the fan can be turned so it doesn't use those vents in front of the cabinet. Otherwise that is where the recirculated air has to come out. Be sure you keep the grease catching filter on the bottom clean - you can run it through the dishwasher a couple times a month - to prevent grease on your cabinet front. Hello Retta - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. If the microwave is installed properly, an internally vented microwave exhaust should not blow directly on the cabinet above, it should blow the exhaust in front of the cabinet. Further, if a proper charcoal filter is installed in the microwave, then the steam and vapors should be limited. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with Read More

I replaced an HVM1540 and it was a perfect fit. I reused the old bracket that was attached to the wall, and the top vent ducting matched perfectly. There is quite a bit of movement allowed in the duct connection in case it doesn't line up exactly. Check the unit dimensions against your old one and that will tell you if it fits. This one has a straight across bottom of the door and my old one had a curved Read More

This one offers sensor cooking where my old one didn't. Sensor cooking detects steam from whatever you are heating and can save you guessing at correct times and sizes for the programmed functions. We had that on the one before and liked it. This works even better - must be a better sensor. Read Less

The vent fan is 2 speed. The light also has choices, including setting a time for the night light to be automatic.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product This microwave is the best. Very quick and easy to use. June 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not the standard I expected from a GE product. Purchased unit and installed it. It lasted one week before the circuit smoked and tripped a breaker. Repairman for GE repaired unit and said it was the fan motor. Two days after repair the same thing happened. Returned unit to Home Depot for the refund of purchase price. Was not an issue with Home Depot but with the unit itself. I expected better from a GE Product. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty simple install. Easy to use. So far so good Install was pretty simple though I do suggest a helper when it comes to putting it up. I did it myself with little effort but, then again, I'm used to doing everything myself. I suggest having a couple spare toggle bolts laying around while hanging the mounting plate. One of the supplied bolts pulled the guts out of the toggle upon minimal tightening. There again, I tend to have things like that around so no biggie. So far so good. Seems like a good machine. Fan is pretty loud which could be quieter if I installed venting. Best bet on an easy install? Having cabinets installed that are plumb and true. January 23, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality After only six months the unit started turning on by itself. I've heard from many sources that GE's quality has gone down in recent years. Unfortunately I found out after I had already bought one. April 10, 2016
