It works as it should. Just remember to grease the threads before tightening the cover back up.
This original design works fine; the belt wrench Home Depot was selling in the store did not work.

I ordered two wrenches, to replace a broken one, which failed during removal of an overtightened filter. This technique worked well, and was much easier on my hands. The stress on each wrench was much less than stress on a single wrench, both hands were used, and I and the wrenches completed the job with no pain or broken tools. I now follow recommendations to hand- tighten the filter housing, but I will continue to use two wrenches for easy removal of the housing.

Great wrench for loosening your House hold waterfilter. This is the 6" for the main house feed filtet not the smaller one for the undersimk filter.

The filter sump had been screwed on so tightly by the original owner we could not get it off by hand. The owner had not left behind the sump wrench so we purchased this one on-line. Even with the wrench, we still had to heat the upper portion of the filter to get the sump to release. The wrench worked as intended and we bough two just in case the first one broke during the removal process. We installed a new filter cartridge and a new gasket well lubricated with silicon grease and tightened the sump by hand. So far no leaks and cleaner water.

The manufacturer does not include the housing removal wrench with their product. Therefore, the customer needs to spend additional funds for that item. And, it way over-priced for a plastic wrench. It's kind-of-like buying any product that must be installed and the manufacturer not providing you the necessary parts that specifically needed for that product.

This product is very well constructed and enabled me to remove a stubborn filter that broke my previous wrench.
