I bought this unit to cool my 20' x 25' garage (which has no insulation and open rafters) where I offer dog training. It gets hot enough to cook things and melt rubber in the summer (not an exaggeration). In spite of the impossible job, the unit does a great job at keeping the garage comfortable. On the recent 90 degree day, although it slowly lost the battle as the outside temp climbed and the sun was beating down on the uninsulated and unvented dark roof, by 2pm it was still keeping the garage about 10 degrees cooler than the outside air. Installation was easy. Just slipped it into the hole in the wall I framed in and plugged it in! In a better insulated space, this unit would be great! And I plan to insulate the garage, so this will only get better for us. I especially like the "auto-on" feature because I can program it to start early each morning and don't have to get up early just to go turn it on (though I do have to re-set that each evening when I turn it off). The filter is easy to access and the unit is holding up to the dust quite well. Only issue is that it "spits" water (condensation) from the front of the unit on really hot days. Not an issue in my space, but could be an issue inside a home or if you want to sit in front of the unit.

Please don't buy this air conditioner. My experience with GE air conditioners has been poor. The first GE unit 12,000 BTU unit purchased for this location lasted 5 years exactly. It worked fine until it quit (lost refrigerant). The current unit, Model AEW12APW1 Serial No. FV548133 was purchased in March 2011. It died this week, again the issue is refrigerant loss. These units only have a 1 year warranty I don't know if some other manufacturer has a better warranty but I am beginning a search today. I have had a similar experience with a GE side by side 24 cubic foot refrigerator, it lasted exactly 5 years (refrigerant loss). Yes, I am now anti-GE, I think they have forgotten how to build durable refrigeration units.

This air conditioner is amazing it is rated for 550 sq ft but with the temperature looming around 95 degrees it still cools my whole downstairs about 1100 sq ft it maintains a comfortable 69 degrees and is quiet while it does it. I would definetly recommend this air conditioner

We received this AC yesterday, and, my husband installed it today. In about 15 minutes, I had to turn it down. It cools extremely fast and was easy to install, even though it weighs 64 pounds. This was not the highest rated AC by Consumer Reports, but, I disagree with their rating. The main reason we went for the GE was the 22" window opening we were limited by. In fact, the GE replaced the highest rated LG window unit. Last year, during the super hot Chicago summer, the LG stopped cooling. When the TPR hit 90 degrees plus, the compressor would go on, and, within about 3 minutes, it made a horrible grinding noise, and, shut down. The LG was also exceptionally noisy right out of the box. I was forced to use an incredible amount of maximum strength duct tape and padding to stop the rattle, and, every week or so, I would have to remove the tape, and, reapply. Although it cooled well, it was very difficult to get a good night's sleep with the LG unit - the constant rattle drove me nuts. The GE is whisper soft. So much for ratings. The unit is working in the hottest room in our house - a 15' x 25' converted attic. I highly recommend this unit. The only drawback - a 1 year warranty.

Installed unit in work shop and unit is working fine so far. Order A/C on line because store because store did not stock it. I was wanting a USA made A/C and Home Depot website showed this unit being made in America but after receiving A/C I found out it was made in China.
I have not had this unit long enough to recommend it one way or the other.
