Place in a wall

instead of a window, could this be put in a wall?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it can be, I installed it in a wall. You should know what to do if you are going to put it in a wall, add proper cross bracing between studs above and below the unit. It won't hurt to use some dense foam padding around and under the unit to absorb vibration too. Seal on the outside with caulk, cut some trim that matches your siding, and on the inside cut some finish trim to go around it and it will look professional when you're done.

For Model AEL12AR - can it fit in a 21 inch window? One reviewer said it fit in her 19" window

Asked by: Anonymous
Of course it will, but you might want to trim that extra inch on each side, a regular 3/4" thick board will fill that gap fine. There are a lot of different types of trim you can get to give it a finished look and close up the remaining 1/4" gap on each side. I recommend getting it in place, securing it with the supplied hardware on the sill and window, then use a little caulk around the outside and some trim on the inside. You could even use something like those plastic pre-caulked bathroom caulk strips along the inside edges.

Can this be mounted in a sliding window? I had a similar-looking ac mounted in this sliding window for many years, with a clear panel mounted above.

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it can be mounted in a sliding window if the window is the right size for it. You can do almost anything you want to trim it in, don't necessarily need to use the provided louvered sides with it.

12,000 BTU 115-Volt Electronic Window Air Conditioner with Remote is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Air Conditioner This air conditioner is amazing it is rated for 550 sq ft but with the temperature looming around 95 degrees it still cools my whole downstairs about 1100 sq ft it maintains a comfortable 69 degrees and is quiet while it does it. I would definetly recommend this air conditioner

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super cooler We received this AC yesterday, and, my husband installed it today. In about 15 minutes, I had to turn it down. It cools extremely fast and was easy to install, even though it weighs 64 pounds. This was not the highest rated AC by Consumer Reports, but, I disagree with their rating. The main reason we went for the GE was the 22" window opening we were limited by. In fact, the GE replaced the highest rated LG window unit. Last year, during the super hot Chicago summer, the LG stopped cooling. When the TPR hit 90 degrees plus, the compressor would go on, and, within about 3 minutes, it made a horrible grinding noise, and, shut down. The LG was also exceptionally noisy right out of the box. I was forced to use an incredible amount of maximum strength duct tape and padding to stop the rattle, and, every week or so, I would have to remove the tape, and, reapply. Although it cooled well, it was very difficult to get a good night's sleep with the LG unit - the constant rattle drove me nuts. The GE is whisper soft. So much for ratings. The unit is working in the hottest room in our house - a 15' x 25' converted attic. I highly recommend this unit. The only drawback - a 1 year warranty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This Unit Has Very Short Life Please don't buy this air conditioner. My experience with GE air conditioners has been poor. The first GE unit 12,000 BTU unit purchased for this location lasted 5 years exactly. It worked fine until it quit (lost refrigerant). The current unit, Model AEW12APW1 Serial No. FV548133 was purchased in March 2011. It died this week, again the issue is refrigerant loss. These units only have a 1 year warranty I don't know if some other manufacturer has a better warranty but I am beginning a search today. I have had a similar experience with a GE side by side 24 cubic foot refrigerator, it lasted exactly 5 years (refrigerant loss). Yes, I am now anti-GE, I think they have forgotten how to build durable refrigeration units.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good buy I bought this unit to cool my 20' x 25' garage (which has no insulation and open rafters) where I offer dog training. It gets hot enough to cook things and melt rubber in the summer (not an exaggeration). In spite of the impossible job, the unit does a great job at keeping the garage comfortable. On the recent 90 degree day, although it slowly lost the battle as the outside temp climbed and the sun was beating down on the uninsulated and unvented dark roof, by 2pm it was still keeping the garage about 10 degrees cooler than the outside air. Installation was easy. Just slipped it into the hole in the wall I framed in and plugged it in! In a better insulated space, this unit would be great! And I plan to insulate the garage, so this will only get better for us. I especially like the "auto-on" feature because I can program it to start early each morning and don't have to get up early just to go turn it on (though I do have to re-set that each evening when I turn it off). The filter is easy to access and the unit is holding up to the dust quite well. Only issue is that it "spits" water (condensation) from the front of the unit on really hot days. Not an issue in my space, but could be an issue inside a home or if you want to sit in front of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had it 2 weeks and it's very good I had it for two weeks and so far so good. Some people think air conditioners should not make noise but they all do but this one is what I call quiet. It cools the room down fast and the energy saver is good because for a 12 x 12 room it comes on for 7 minutes stays off for 10 minutes and comes back on. But it depends on how hot it is outside and how your house is insulated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this! Great unit. Wish they carried it in store but delivery was relatively painless and they arrived when they said they would so there wasn't hours of waiting etc. The unit itself does a great job of cooling the space. The biggest downside is that it's a bit noisy but nothing that is a deal breaker (at least not for my family).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well except for the thermistor misreading at times We have obtained two unit this spring/summer. We wanted this brand because during its energy saving mode the fan does not come on every ten minutes to move air over the thermistor as other brands do. We find this more desireable as it doesn't need to come on during most nights and allows us to sleep better. The problem with both of the units is that some of the time, not always, after the unit reaches the desired temperature, which we set down to 64, and the fan stops running, the measured temperature at the thermistor continues to drop until it believes it is in the 40 degree range. At that point the energy saver light starts blinking. Even though the room warms up into the higher seventies the unit still thinks it is cold and will not turn back on. If I run it in fan mode only for a couple of minutes, allowing the air to pass by the thermistor the reading comes up to what is reality. Then I turn the mode back to energy saving and it work properly. This problem seems to happen every couple of nights. Because of this we are still losing sleep, waking up to basically correct the problem and have the room cool down again so we can sleep well. If GE were to use a very small laptop type fan in front of the thermistor I imagine they could correct this probem, not use much energy and have the noise level be much better than the other brands that all seem to have their units wake up and run the fan for twenty to thirty seconds every ten minutes. I had high hopes, therefore I tried two units, but I am disappointed to say the least. Your mileage may vary based on your climate I would guess. We live in a very dry climate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Working as it should. Installed unit in work shop and unit is working fine so far. Order A/C on line because store because store did not stock it. I was wanting a USA made A/C and Home Depot website showed this unit being made in America but after receiving A/C I found out it was made in China. I have not had this unit long enough to recommend it one way or the other.
