Hello Oystercatcher1 - this is Nancy at GE Appliances. We are sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience with regard to your new refrigerator. This is a nice model and we're sorry you found it to be loud. Because the new refrigerators are more energy efficient, they make different sounds than what you may be accustomed. We recommend making certain the unit is level and that the doors are closing and sealing properly. Also, it helps to have the refrigerator and freezer half to three-fourths full. We recommend gallon jugs of water to take up the empty space if necessary. Otherwise, all of our refrigerators will have the normal operating sounds that are listed in the back of the Owner's Manual. These include periodic humming, whooshing, whirring, clicks, pops, cracks, chirps and occasional water sounds. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us! Read Less

What distance from the side wall is needed to open door enough to fully open the crisper bin and remove shelves?

I read a review where they could barely open the crisper bin because the door only opened to 90 degrees (due to being immediately adjacent to wall on the right side).
Now that I look at the photos I see what they mean. looks like it might also affect shelf setup?

Answer:
Hi BrooklynJeff,
I am happy to help. There is no extra clearance needed since there is not a shelf in front of the door bin. You do need to have enough clearance to open the door 90 degrees. I hope this helps. Thank you for checking with us.
Lisa from GE Appliances.

Customer Reviews

15.5 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in Stainless Steel is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 165.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Fridge with a few things to be aware of I wanted a stainless fridge to fit in a fairly small space, and this was the only option that I found that fit my space requirements. So I was happy to find that it is quite sturdy, and seems to do its job of keeping things cold really well. There are two things to be aware of that I see others have also mentioned. 1) Due to the layout of my kitchen, the door can only open 90 degrees (it is against a wall). Because of this, the door-side crisper drawer catches in the rubber seal on the door. It opens about 3" before it hits the seal, and with some careful tugging I am able to open it far enough to fill it, but I do worry that the seal will eventually tear, either over time or if one unsuspecting person forces it open. I am considering replacing the drawer with a smaller plastic bin, which really isn't ideal. 2) The stainless door (note the sides are some sort of magnetic dark grey material) smudges very easily. I read this in other reviews and wasn't too concerned, since this is a fairly inexpensive stainless fridge. But I also find that it seems to be very susceptible to rust (or some other rust colored speckling). Within a few days of receiving the fridge, I found rust colored speckles under a magnet, and have since removed all magnets from the door. I have also found more speckles developing on the side of the door. I haven't decided whether or not this is enough of a problem to reach out to customer service yet, since so far I seem to have been able to remove most, but not all, of it with some elbow grease. So for people who are limited in their choices due to space, this is a solid little fridge that will get the job done. But if you have other options, I might consider spending a little more to get a better quality stainless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GE Stainless steel refrigerator I bought this a month ago & so far it's working great...I love this fridge, has many different compartments & freezer is large. I didn't give 5 Stars because it came with a defective bulb.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Delivery/Packaging Comment I have only just installed this fridge so I cannot speak to long term operation at this point. However, I expect it to be a crackerjack product or I would not have chosen it. So far, it got cold quick and appears to meet my expectations for roominess and layout. But I am compelled (out of frustration ) to comment on startup. I spent over 2 hours trying to get the confounded blue protective wrap off and still was unable to get it all off. I have it sticking out in small quantities on various edges. I admit it was not scratched or blemished in any way, no doubt owing somewhat to the wrapping. But it seemed to be boxed pretty securely as well, so I'm not sure the wrapping need be 'homeland security grade' attached. There must be some trick to removable, but I didn't get the memo.......

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent use of space This compact refrigerator is engineered extremely efficiently - it maximizes the space available so that it almost like a full size model. It is amazing how technology has improved even in the past 10 years. We are so happy to have the icemaker option as well. This is a perfect fit for us for our in-law apartment where space is at a premium.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks Great My last GE refrigerator was 25years old but needed defrosting but was still working. I was tired of defrosting in this fast passed life so I bought this new one and love it.. Just like some other reviews it took a few adjustments to get the freezer and frig. to be at the right temperature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Product! We just moved-into a newly renovated house that's kitchen included this GE fridge and we were so pleased. It has proven to be every thing GE raves about. And though we get a little OCD about keeping the brushed stainless steel looking rich, it's worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice features Received this refrigerator last week. I like that it's energy star rated. I also prefer the glass shelves that this model has. It's a good size for my small kitchen. Would recommend it to anyone with limited space in the kitchen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit I've had this refrigerator for a few months now and it's been running just fine. Love the iff white color and the narrow shelfs and drawers. It's a great medium sized refrigerator.
