Is a point of use hot water heater compatable with a tankless hot water heater?

GE 2.5 gal. 6 Year 1440W 120V Electric Point-of-Use Water Heater My tankless water heater is several feet from our kitchen. As a result, it takes about three minutes and gallons of water before we have hot water at our kitchen sink. Is this unit suitable to supplement our tankless heater? What happens when the hot water from the tankless heater arrives at the point of use hot water heater (e.g., Do the two heaters conflict with each other? Does the point of use hot water heater stop heating when the hot water from the tankless heater reaches the point of use heater?).

I have a tankless hot water heater. It takes 3 1/2 minutes with a Grundfos pump to circulate hot water through the entire house. So I set up the recirc pump with a INSTEON switch so the recirc pump only runs when I hit the button, then it shuts off after 3 1/2 minutes on its own. I installed this tank heater under the kitchen sink for that faucet "only" and it is supplied by cold water line, not the tankless. Works great! Instant hot water all the time in the kitchen, while the tankless only runs for showers, laundry and dishwasher. (wife is most appreciative) IMPORTANT LESSON LEARNED. Whenever I ran the recirc pump, even tho it is on the hot line the new tank heater would release water from the T/P valve. Hmmm? SOLUTION was to install a small expansion tank and the problem was solved. (by the way I installed the expansion tank in the kitchen island not right next to the tank heater) Now have the best of both worlds. Fast hot water at kitchen sink, limited run time on tankless heater. I'm a serious penny pincher so after dinner dishes are done I hit the switch to the water heater off for the night. Reheatst the water in about 4 minutes the next morning.

Can the unit be purchased in 220 volt instead of 110 volt

Asked by: Anonymous
Not this particular size. Only the larger units use 220.

are the input/output connectors on the top of the heater, and how far apart are they?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. They are female connectors requireing a male 1/2" MIP connector to hook into your water system. The inlet and output connectors are about 6 inches apart.

2.5 gal. 6 Year 1440-Watt Electric Point-of-Use Water Heater is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what we had hoped to accomplish! Since the primary hot water heater is on the opposite side of the house, we wasted water and grew impatient waiting for the hot water. Installed this heater under the kitchen sink to supply it and the dishwasher. Made an adjustment on the sink drain line to allow space for the heater. Plumbed the intake with the main hot water line so after the 2.5 gal. of instant hot water, it could heat the initial cold water from the hot water line. Set the thermostat at about 135 degrees. Used 3way plug to tie in the same 20 amp circuit as dishwasher and has not been a problem. So pleased to rinse dishes and start the dishwasher with instant hot water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hot water when you want it In my house it would take a good two or so minutes for the water in my kitchen to come out of the faucet hot. We'd stand there running the faucet at full blast waiting for it to heat up, so I purchased this item to provide immediate hot water (and to avoid wasting it!). Since I hooked it up to the existing hot water line (vs. a cold water line), it comes out hot right away while the cold water in the line from the water heater in the basement flows into the 2.5 gallon tank. This mixes that cold water with the water in the tank and by the time the original 2.5 gallons in the tank is used, hot water is then flowing into the tank from the water heater, refilling it and then providing hot water from the 50 gallon tank. I have the thermostat set to 138 degrees and when the cold water comes in from the line from the basement, it never dips below 120 degrees and then refills with 130 degree water from our household water heater. This makes it very efficient also since it never has to heat water from ground temp--it only has to bump it up a few degrees and maintain it. It is so nice to never have to wait for hot water. As for the design, it is very compact and fit into a space that many other brands of 2.5 gallon point-of-use water heaters would not fit into. And with the plumbing from a double sink, as well as a large garbage disposal, I was worried it might be too big for what little room I did have, but was pleasantly surprised at the size out of the box. Installation was a breeze as well. Just needed two 1/2" threaded brass nipples, Teflon tape, and a 1/2" to 1/2" faucet hose. I did have to remove the drain from the left side of the sink to get it into position, but that was simple. Keep that in mind as an option if you initially think it won't fit past your plumbing. It comes with a three-prong plug wired in from the manufacturer (which is actually Rheem but branded GE) to plug into an existing outlet (or in my case, a newly installed outlet powered by the garbage disposal line). As a side note, since this runs at less than 1500 watts (1440), it'll run off 14 gauge wire and a 15 amp breaker (vs the 12/20 for larger units). I would definitely recommend this item. Hopefully, it will perform well for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2.5 Gal Water Heater This water is very small and fit right under the sink in my office and it works great and fast. It is a lot better than a tankless. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised, yet better than expected. I installed this unit under my kitchen sink as the main water heater was too far away to privide hot water and warm water took several minutes. It was annoying to say the least. After installing the 2.5 gallon water heater I now have instant hot water and use considerably less water in the process. While I knew this is what this product was suppose to do, I can't tell you how much more surprised I was by how well this product performed. While the installation can be easy if you have a nearby plug for power and ample room to locate the unit, the installation can become a bit more difficult if you lack these two conveniences. In my case I had to install an electrical plug before installing the heater which led to another chore of painting the area under the sink for a nice look once all was completed. The electrical plug went in fine as I could tie into a plug above the counter space next to the sink. This circut also had a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) in line. I did install a socket with one three prong (grounded) plug with a switch (combination) so I could turn the power off to the heater without affecting any other appliances on the circut. As for the heater itself, you have to install a 1/2 to 3/8 inch fitting for both the Hot and Cold fittings on top of the heater. I took the hot water line from the wall and connected it with a pex line and compression fitting to the Cold fitting on top of the water heater. I then took the faucet hot water connection and connected it to the Hot fitting on the water heater. I decided to do it this way as I didn't want to hook the cold water line to the heater and diluting any hot water in the heater during use. It works very well this way. I also turned the heaters temp control to 125 but found this was way too hot. I would recommend installing with the factory settings first and adjust as needed. The cover plate to the heater tempurature contols is held by a single screw on the bottom of the access plate. This is a bit annoyning especially if you have placed the heater in a spill pan. I didn't look close enough but I believe if you wanted to you could turn the access plate around 180 degrees and tap the scew retainer on the top side. I also purchases in store a Rubber Maid plastic container, two pieces of 2x4's, and a pressure relief tube for any possible discharge. I place the two 2x4's on the inside bottom of the plastic container and then rested the heater on top of the two 2x4's. The container will trap any leaks or discharges and the 2x4's will rise the heater high enough so as not to be emersed in water should it leak a little. I would very much recommend this product if you have a need for a POU water heater. Pic's included.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from small and easy to install I installed this in line with the hot water supply to the sink. It was easy to connect the supply to the inlet and then send the outlet to the faucet. The cord was plenty long enough. Initially it smelled - the tank itself and the water - but flushing the several gallons of water through it cured the water smell and the tank smell went away after a week.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent water heater Water heater is the perfect size and looks to be very well made. Works great. The only problem is the mounting bracket. Throw it away and come up with something on your own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase Does exactly what it should. I now have "instant" hot water at my kitchen sink. I now use less water because the water is hot when I turn on the faucet. The reviews suggesting running the hot water source (rather than the cold water source) into the unit is definitely good advice. I'm totally pleased with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product was easily installed Product was purchased for an employee bathroom that did not have hot water. A tankless unit was initially tried but power cord would not reach. This unit was easily installed by an untrained professional and is working just fine.
