Answer:
The GE recommended specs for this 20kw model is 18 inches from the house. Most city codes follow the manufacturer's specs. I had to call GE and they emailed me the installation page with the placement photos. You may need to do this for a city inspector.

This unit only comes on when the power is out for more than...20 seconds I believe. I have my unit set for an "exercise" cycle every week - 10 minutes to keep it...healthy. This generator is a lifesaver - after Hurricane Sandy cut our power for a week, we invested quite a bit to have this system installed. It was been worth every penny...

Answer:
You probably won't even notice it on your fuel bill if you have other items using the fuel. It'll just blend in.
When they run an exercise cycle they do so at NO LOAD, which is to say that they DON'T transfer your home to generator power. ( They only transfer when there is an actual power outage. )

Answer:
It depends on your fuel source, Natural Gas or Propane? I have not had an outage longer than 20-30 minutes since installation so I can't say what it would cost to run continuously for a week or more. We use Natural Gas which is cheap.

Customer Reviews

20,000-Watt Air Cooled Home Generator System with Symphony II Whole House 200-Amp Automatic Transfer Switch is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Purchased this generator 10/1/2010 and has operated flawlessly for 6 years. I had an electrician install it, but I change oil, filters and spark plugs myself. We have lost power several times (one time for 4 days) and the symphony system works great. I also purchased the cold weather kit. We purchased this generator for medical reasons and I waited six years to write this review. I have a 5,000 square foot house and it runs everything. Others companies wanted to sell me bigger generators at twice the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisfied Customer Generator and Transfer Switch ships directly from Briggs and Stratton plant in Wisconsin. Product was delivered to house on time. Hired an electrician to install and a GE certified dealer to oversee installation and start up. Electrician had no trouble installing it and GE dealer (Houston) was great to deal with. Don't cheap out on the installation and be sure to sign up with a local dealer for the annual maintenance contract - it is well worth it. Generator performs a weekly self-diagnostic check and runs for 20 min. Very satisfied with this purchase. Wireless monitor works well too. Note: Air intake is on the right side and discharge is in the front on left side (see attached photos)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm happy with my GE 20kW generator After looking carefully at the Generac, GE, and Cummins generators, I settled on the GE 20kW model for my home. I live in a fairly large three level house in the mid-south; I have two air conditioners and a heat pump. I was initially concerned that I'd need to buy one of the bigger four cylinder generators, but after talking to a few folks, I decided the 20kW would meet my needs. I power the generator using natural gas, so the actual rating is 18kW. I had the entire job done by Paul K Young Electrical (501 AUTUMN CHASE CT, INMAN, SC 29349, (864) 331-9730). Paul did all the work, from helping me choose the right generator to testing it to make sure everything worked properly. During testing, we started up all three AC compressors, my hot tub (with all the blowers on high), and left everything in my house plugged in and running. When the A/C compressors kicked in, there was the briefest (less than a second) surge in generator engine load, then the engine continued to hum smoothly. With every load on, Paul measured generator output at 42 amps - leaving 33 amps to power more stuff before reaching the max output of 78 amps. I couldn't hear any audible evidence that the engine was loaded - it sounded the same carrying all the house loads as when it was idling. I had three load-shed switches installed, and they effectively sequenced the main loads. There's a remote indicator that confirms all systems are go that comes with the unit - nice to have, since I might not look at the generator itself often enough to notice a warning light there. The Generac system was a a little cheaper, but I was concerned about its load management capabilities (dimming lights, etc.). The Onan-Cummings generator was interesting; I particularly liked the reduced noise output, but didn't like it's load sequencing options as much as GE's. It would have cost about $1000 more, so the noise reduction didn't seem worth the cost. The GE sounds like a lawnmower; when the guys came through to cut my grass yesterday, the noise from their mowers was significantly louder than my running generator. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the product, and would strongly recommmend Paul Young as an installer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Generator don't last long I had the 20kw home generator installed 5 years ago and kept in good maintenance condition. We had lost power quite few times over last 5 years and the generator always starts flawlessly. However this pass week during its weekly excersise cycle, the generator just stopped in the middle of the cycle. It turns out the cylinder wall got a hole browned thru. My generator has a total run hour of 145 hours. This is low usage over 5 years and now the generator is totally useless. Not a very good quality product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Generator with the biggest Bang for your Buck! After doing extensive research, and installing a Generac Gaurdian and having it fail when I needed it most, I was led to this wonderful machine by my authorized dealer. I had this 20kw GE whole house generator installed a few months before Hurricane Irene. Not only did it preform amazingly well, when Sandy came around it was like it had never even hit (having 4 families stay with us on the other hand.... ) :). I consider myself a generator aficionado, and trust me when I tell you that this machine is the way to go. I do, however, recommend that you have it installed by an authorized generator installation company, because it makes a big difference in warranty and service coverage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not have Fire Code Rating The generator casing is not rated for 1 hour fire as the other brand which means it must be located 5 feet from your home / building due to the Fire Hazard. The other brand is Fire Rated, has a sticker on it and has to be mounted 18 inches or more from the house (not 5 feet away). This is why some of the major retailers do not carry this product in their stores. The home owner with limited yard space should go with the other brand! Baltimore County, MD require permits and inspection on the electrical and gas installation, to code. Natural gas supply / meter has to be upgraded too. Generator is not returnable where the other brand is up to 30 days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a Bad Generator. It really is your best bang for your buck. You can't beat the 5 year warranty. Everything in it is Briggs and stratton, with some "special touches" from GE. Within 6 months the voltage regulator on the board causing the starter to burn out. This was replaced very quickly within 24 hours which is great. You can't really judge a product based on that though. Other than that this beast powers the whole house, 2 furnaces, and 2 Acs with plenty of power left over. When it works its a solid 4 stars with the following annoyances: 1) We live downtown and during an outage would like to turn off the generator at night so not to waste fuel and disturb the neighbors. The only way to do this is to walk outside and hit the off button. It would be nice if there was a automatic cool down period after hitting the off button. It also would be nice if we could wire a on/off switch inside the house. Instead its attached on the board. 2) Since we will loose power for maybe 30 seconds in the middle of the night all the time, i keep the unit turned off unless we need it. If its not turned off we hear the thing fire up for 5 mins. at say 3am and its annoying. It would be nice to adjust the turn on delay and set it for maybe 15 min, if the unit senses no power. Or even better, if there was a way to wire a timer to the unit so the unit will not turn on between the hours of 11pm and 7am. 3) The exhaust points straight down and the hot gases absolutely kills the lawn. Surly there was an easy way to have the fumes shoot up so it also does not catch rain. Now as a home owner, i need to live with a large swath of dead grass or oddly place some sort of landscaping stone around the unit. 4) If we had a large yard with no neighbors it would be very quite. However, our bedroom is by the unit so we hear it turn on. They could make a slightly oversize housing, with extra insulation inside to make it more quite. I would gladly pay more for that. 5) I change the oil myself it in. It would be nice if the drain hose was longer. The way the unit sits on a pad, its hard to get the hose down into an oil pan with out using another say 8" of random material to get the oil down into the pan. I had it professionally installed so i would imagine the install was pretty run of the mill. These units can burn oil, so if you have a storm coming, you might want to check the oil level before the storm. Over all, you can't beat the warranty , in my eyes when you buy a piece of equipment like this, assuming all performance specs are the same, the warranty is where its at.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not reliable I had this unit professionally installed a year ago. It has needed a new computer board and now it does not start (polar vortex?). But if it does not work in extreme cold and is not reliable, what peace of mind does it provide? The technician indicated that others are also having problems with these models.
