Hello Joyce - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. The freezer shelf in the freezer of this top mount refrigerator is wire. We do not offer a glass shelf in the freezer in any of our top mount refrigerators. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Why won't it ever get cold enough?

Even with the main compartment set on the coldest setting, I've never been able to get this refrigerator to be much below 40 degrees. Once in a while it'll be as low as 37 (and this is on the COLDEST setting) but usually it's 39 or 40. It has been like this since I got it a couple years ago. I have used many thermometers and am placing them in various locations in the back and toward the bottom.

I've tried combining the coldest setting in the refrigerator with colder and warmer freezer temps to see if that made a difference. The refrigerator dials work in the sense that 7 is colder than 1...but it's like the 1 to 7 range all about 8 degrees higher than it ought to be. I came online to see if I could find some info about locating some kind of internal thermostat that perhaps just needed an adjustment, but I have not found any good info.

It doesn't seem likely that there's a buildup of dust or ice as an explanation, because the temperature hasn't been right since I *got* it and there wouldn't have been any buildup of anything when it was brand-new.

The freezer's cold settings work fine -- a medium setting in there results in properly frozen food.

Hello- This is Lisa from GE. I am sorry for your inconvenience. Several factors may influence the temperature. Try the following:
•Make sure refrigerator and freezer doors can close and can properly seal.
•Make sure the back wall of the freezer does not have an ice build-up.
Check for large items, such as trays, platters, food items (like pizza boxes), and ice behind the ice bin that may interfere with door closure.
If the doors do not close on their own when partially opened, you may need to adjust the leveling legs or rollers so that the front is higher than the back. Keep adjusting the level until the door closes on its own when you open the door halfway (45 degree angle).
•Make sure door gaskets are sealing properly.
Be sure the refrigerator is installed in an area where the temperature will not go below 60°F (16°C) or exceed 110°F. Your refrigerator may not cool normally if installed outside of these temperature ranges
Make sure the interior lights are going off when the doors are closed. To check on most models, close the door slowly. The light should go out when the door opening is reduced to approximately 1 inch. If the light stays on, it may produce heat that affects your refrigerator temperature
If the above items do not fix the issue, you may need to schedule service at 800.432.2737.

Why have the sizes of the refrigerators changed so much?

This question is from 21 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in Bisque

My current fridge is 29 yrs old & still works but want to update to an energy efficient one. This one was 31" wide & 66" tall & fit perfect into the opening in my kitchen for the fridge..also 21 cu ft. Now I can't find one that cu ft with a size that fits into my opening, I'm going to have to go to an 18 cu ft & I don't like that. Now the 20.6 are either 32.5" wide or 69" high, neither of which fit in older homes..meaning like 39 yr old homes. This is very frustrating, you should keep in mind that older homes are not made like the fancy new ones are!

Hello,
This is Donna with GE and I am sorry for your frustration.
Yes, throughout the appliance industry, refrigerator dimensions have changed over the years.
On the plus side they are more energy efficient and many new features have been added. I do
understand your concerns but to accomodate a larger size, remodeling may need to be done.
Should you hve any additional questions, please let us know.

Does this fridge has a separate thermostat for the main compartment and another one for the freezer?

This question is from 21 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in White
Asked by

I noticed that present day fridges of the lower end no longer have two thermostats. This might explain the temperature control problems another person asked here about. Higher end fridges have one thermostat to regulate the freezer and another, the main compartment. With one thermostat, if the food is frozen to standard deep freeze temperature, the main compartment's food freezes as well. If the main compartment temperature is standard one - 23-38 degrees, there is no deep freeze. I'd appreciate a straight forward reply. Nowhere in this site is a photo of the thermostat regulating the freezer and fridge temperature

Hello Ayala,
Thank you for your question on the GE 21 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator model # GTH21KBXWW.
The temperature controls for the freezer and fresh food sections are located at the top front of the fresh food section. There is a dial for the freezer and a dial for the fresh food that can be adjusted from 1-7. You can view the interior of the refrigerator and the controls on the GE Appliance website.
There is one thermostat on top mount refrigerators. Factors that affect the temperature include the amount of food in the refrigerator or freezer, frequency of door openings and the temperature of the food when placed the the refrigerator. It is recommended to put the dials on 4 and you can adjust if needed. the fresh food section should measure somewhere between 34 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should measure between -5 and +8 degrees Fahrenheit.
The freezer cools both sides. The freezer control is just a mechanical duct that allows more or less air to flow to the fresh food section. The higher you set the freezer, the less air you are allowing to flow to the fresh food section!
I hope this helps!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by GE - GTH21SBXSS - TOP FREEZER - NO LIGHT! I BOUGHT THIS REFRIGERATOR PARTLY BECAUSE I DID NOT NEED AN ICEMAKER. WELL, GUESS WHAT? THERE IS NO FREEZER LIGHT EITHER! I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A MODERN REFRIGERATOR WITHOUT A FREEZER LIGHT. IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE AN IMPROVEMENT? VERY DISAPPOINTING! ALSO, THE EXTERIOR IS SUPPOSED TO BE STAINLESS. ACTUALLY, THE SIDES ARE SOLID BLACK IN THEIR ENTIRETY. THIS REFRIGERATOR SHOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS BLACK WITH A STAINLESS DOOR. July 2, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good purchase Had this refrigerator installed a few days ago, and so far I am very happy with it. It is just what I wanted., a basic refrigerator that was energy efficient. It looks really nice, has a good interior design, and runs very quietlyI. I am very happy with it, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a basic refrigerator without ice maker or water dispenser. August 23, 2009
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I really like the looks of the product. It did come with 2 small dents in freezer door. I did not notice until after the delivery people left. I like the door storage shelves. The temperature contrals are in the front middle and block large items sitting on top shelve. Over all I am happy with the purchase. June 13, 2010
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by great fridge, but noisey,,louder than 20 yr replacement this fridge is ok but loud,,,I talked to a rep on this, and she read possible causes from what seemed like from the owners manual.I press on the rear panel, and loud noise diminishes...I hope I can get a service tech,to just check it out. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this fridge! Spacious, love the gallon storage in the door. Super quiet and I can see everything with the clear shelves and clear bins. Temp controls in front for easy adjusting too. Adjustable shelves are wonderful too. I can pack a ton of food, 2 liter bottles, juice, and milk. I reviewed all the Consumer websites and found this one to be the best size, price, value, with all the basic features you would want. Because I didn't have all buy a fridge with all the whiz bang features that always break down (ice, water, etc.) I'm looking forward to years of maintenance free use of this fridge. April 3, 2010
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Noisy. Not as flexible as it appears This refrigerator emits a low buzzing sound loud enough to cause sympathetic rattling of a folding step stool stored next to it. I can hear it in the far bedroom with the bedroom door closed. We liked that the shelves were half widths and could be positioned at different heights. However, we also wanted the door to open from the right. While it was easy to switch the hinges and handles, the shelf with the drawer can only be located on the left so you have to open the door all the way in order to open the drawer. The backets cannot be switched from left to right. I even looked at the GE parts website to see if there was right drawer shelf that I could buy separately; but no, there is only a left shelf with a drawer. March 27, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Reasonable for the price but not as rugged as older similar units The interior plastic is much cheaper and thinner than the older GE we have. The butter compartment does not fit on either side of the door, just the one side. The interior vinyl/plastic liner was slightly damaged just trying to move the "movable" unit from the right to the left location. Freezer works well. The refrig compartment seems to have a harder time staying cool. Unit humms but is quieter than the 17 year old refrig it replaces. Would recommend but if you want a quieter unit with a bit more durability and ruggedness, you might want to spend a little bit more. May 28, 2011
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Looks better than it performs! I got this refrigerator because it looked so nice. However, found out the hard way, that I got it mainly cause of its looks. I guess GE quality went down since I remember last. It really doesn't cool properly or evenly in the refrigerator part. So much for space for a gallon of milk in the door, it doesn't matter, cause it will go bad. About 3 months after purchase it started acting up. Also, I wish it offered a place for eggs, like other brands used to offer a bin.... I would not recommend this item. February 11, 2013
