Responding to Bilbo: My experience agrees with your answer. I decided to pull the heavier wire because it was a straight path. The previous unit had often tripped the 15amp breaker when the fan was on highest speed and the compressor came on. No such problems with the 20amp wire and breaker. Well worth the effort.

The specifications on this unit indicate an amperage use of 12 amps. A 15 amp 220 volt circuit should carry the load. It's a little close to the 15 amp limit of your circuit though. If it's not too difficult to pull new #12 wire, I'd consider doing that. If it is too involved, consider trying it on the #14 wire and see how it goes. Worst case is it trips breaker when compressor kicks on. Then you'll have Read More

Answer:
Hello Karen - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. If your air conditioner is not cooling properly, then it will need to be serviced by a service technician. You would not be able to add coolant to it. We recommend contacting GE Factory Service at 1-800-432-2737 for assistance. We apologize for any inconvenience and are glad you checked with us!

If you look at page 13 or 14 and check the installation specs for "through the wall" you may find some help. If you can properly seal the sides of the unit without the extension panels, you should be able to use this unit. I've installed one through the wall in my shop in this way.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Beats the hot sticky NJ heat Cools the first floor of a 2 story home (+/- 1400 sq ft) with the help of a ceiling fan. Relatively quiet for a machine this size. NOTE: it takes 2 adults to safely install the A/C in the window sleeve! Price was comparable to other appliance retailers. Energy Star-compliant means fan only runs when cooling is called for, but you can opt out of the default. Did check CU before buying, they do not test A/C's this big, so durability is unknown. At this point so far I would buy another. July 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by quiet and cool bought GE A/C as replacement for another brand and was so impressed with how well it performed, quiet and colder than house ever was, and an extra bonus... the electric bill actually went down, not up.. three months later bought a GE washing machine... also works great and so quiet it took us awhile checking on it to be sure it was going thru all the cycles... never have i seen a washer this quiet May 13, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 98degrees outside. comfortable 75 inside. I'm using this wonderful machine right now. We had an older AC unit that just wasn't cutting it on super hot days. Room size is around 800 sq ft with super high ceilings. Plus,we're on the upper level, so we've always had issues with the cool air flowing down the stairs and leaving us to roast up here. This AC is great so far. I haven't quite figured out the Energy Saving Setting but with standard cool air on full fan speed it's downright chilly in here! Yay! I have it set at 75 currently... and it's not having any issues! I could set this even colder... but when that compressor kicks on and the cool air flows out, it's quite chilly. Plus, even though this unit is rated for a huge room - it's quieter then the last unit we had. Awesome AC. Bring on the summer :D June 22, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by excellent i am very happy with product. It is very efficient. Easy to use. It works fine. September 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Old 1 lasted 31 years! We just purchased this GE air conditioner.  We had an old GE powerthrust air conditioner that just went out.  It was 31 years old!  Manufactured 1/82.  The GE was a little more expensive than the other brands that i looked at but we went with GE because of the service that we got out of the old one.  The old saying is, they don't make em like they used to, but I hope we get as good of service out of this one as we did the old one.  Time will tell!   August 23, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good Just installed the unit in time for some hot days here in SoCal, and it seems to be working great so far. It's in the living room with overflow to the kitchen and computer room, and we're all comfortable. I installed it in a new hole in the wall so I did not really need to remove the innards from the metal shell as the instructions indicate - but... since there is packing material inside, I still had to get in there, which was a pain. Yes, it was a bit difficult at first to remove the front cover. The trick is (as the instructions sort-of say) is to press the sides of the metal case in. That releases the plastic latches on the front cover. Easy once you have done it. But sliding the innards out and back in is not fun, especially with just one person, and trying to be careful not to touch the radiator fins. June 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is a 100% true statement I read the reviews on this item prior to buying it. I am quite mechanicaly inclined so I thought the install would be easy, but I had some trouble with the instructions too. I have to say, it was well worth the effort and the cost! Once I got this baby fired up, I enjoyed the next day inside my home. Just in time! It got up to 107F outside on July 4th weekend in EKU Washington, but our new A/C kept it a cool 74F inside the 24'x70' modest poorly insulated double wide trailer! Unbelieveable, I know! July 9, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Most satisfied purchase in a long time. Just purchased this unit. I read some bad reviews about difficult installations and poorly written instructions. It is a chore to install but the directions were right on the money. It's also a two man lift to reinstall the unit into the case and running the 230 volt line was advanced for me but I really enjoyed the challenge. Started blowing cold air right away. Best and most satisfied purchase I have made in a long time. Thank you Home Depot and GE! July 19, 2013
