yes the lamp should be set to on. THe timer doesn't actually turn on the lamp (or whatever you plug into it) it turns on the electricity. You pop up the peg for the time you want the lamp to go on and then all the pegs behind that peg until you want it to go off. So: you want it go on at 6 pm. Answer:
BEFORE you unplug the lamp to plug it into the timer use the chain to turn it ON. The timer can't pull the chain, the chain switch has to be on so the lamp will light when the timer sends it electricity.

Answer:
The lamp only has to be "on" after setting the timer and plugging the lamp into it. Using the included instructions will help you a lot, but the pegs are only used to set the timer on/off modes: there is a middle dial to set the current time of day. Hope this helps!

Hello jdog, I’m Newf from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
Your lamp(s) need to be on to operate with the timer. Timers become the switch. You set the time of day by rotating the dial to match the current time with a pointer.

I pulled up the times the light should be lit, plugged the light into it and then to the wall. It never came on. The switch was set to timer. Any suggestions?

Answer:
you have to be sure the light is in the on position - plug it into a regular outlet first ensure the light is on. Then without turning off the lamp, unplug it from the regular outlet and plug it into your timer (which should already be set up to the time you want it come on and off)

Answer:
The instructions say you have to have the buttons pushed DOWN for when you want the lamp lit. Also check to see if you have the "current time" set to the right time of day (a.m. or p.m.).

Hi Fran,
Thank you for your question.
According to the manufacturer, the GE 15076 timers switch must be moved to the “Timer ON” position for the unit to turn on and off with the programmed times.”
Hope this helps.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 25 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good timer for the $, if you don't care about noise Probably if you're going DEAF, this is the perfect timer for you. Pretty darn accurate, if you can figure out an egg timer, you can figure out how to set it. But it makes a CREAKING NOISE as it goes, kind of like a board game timer, which makes me wish I hadn't bought it. So I'll probably throw it into a drawer for the next 10 years and try to find a SILENT timer, probably something digital. But if you don't hear well, or want to stick this in a far off corner of your house for lighting something you never get close enough to listen to - can't beat it for 7 bucks. June 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't take a genius to recognize a good timer. In case you haven't figured it out yet, the numbers go counterclockwise because the dial rotates clockwise. If you can't push the buttons down it must mean that they are already down and need to be pulled up. If the night-day thing confuses you than use a sharpie and mark midnight and noon on the dial. That should help. This is about the simplest timer I have ever used. January 30, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product works like a charm and very simple to install I am very happy with my Timer that I purchased at Home Depot. My son installed it with no problem and it is on target working great. It is quiet, nice design and easy to install and use. May 21, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by did not last 2 weeks I bought 2 of these in December 2011 to use on lamps while we were away on vacation for 10 days. When I used them on lamps when we were away for 3 days in March 2012, I returned in the evening to find one of them had stopped working completely. Caveat emptor. March 29, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by confusing instructions The directions for this timer are wrong! It said to push down the strip, at the time we desired. But, after much frustration, I accidently pulled up on it, and it worked. The timer worked, but is not user friendly. January 10, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by not a good product very hard to set, i want it to come on at ten am and go off at six pm i would think i could get it within ten or so minutes but i can not would not buy another one April 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is the fifth time I have purchased this timer. I seem to keep finding a need for another timer. I have found that the slide switch between timer and outlet makes this product a plus rather than a the small turn dial on other brands that do not seem to lock. April 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent equipment I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this timer is to use, and it works like a charm! I get to set my lighting to come on and off whenever I want during the day or night and just simply forget about it! Great job!!!! November 8, 2011
