Not necessary. But you will be stuck with one of the broken units unless you repair the broken one. I just replaced a combo. I fixed the oven a few times but once the microwave went it was time for a new unit. The first one lasted 21 years. Just do not choose a hidden bottom element as the take much longer to pre heat

You may want to reset the electronics by turning off power at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds or so. Check to ensure the is door closed firmly. Close it firmly, but do not slam. This confirms the engagement of the door's safety mechanisms. Make sure the “Timer” function was not inadvertently used. For safety reasons, we offer no do-it-yourself repair advice on microwave ovens due to an internal high voltage capacitor (can hold a high voltage charge even after it has been unplugged). Special equipment is generally needed to make a diagnosis. If the above suggestions do not solve the problem and the microwave still won't heat, we recommend contacting service. The conbination is wired into a deicated 30 AMP Circuit. I had a Home Depot installer check everything prior to ordering. They check size, space and electrical needs. Well worth $50.00 charge as unit is not returnable if you get it wrong.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 56 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Microwave broke after only 2.5 years. The microwave section broke after only 2.5 years. Unfortunately, this is a combo with the oven and they stopped manufacturing the model. Therefore you can't buy just a replacement for the microwave. It's sad to see that GE's product quality has gone down so much because their quality reputation was factored into my buying decision. It appears now that the less expensive products might also be higher quality or at the very least, a much better value. August 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Has a known problem with the microwave section The microwave portion of the walloven combo failed after 13 months. The micro wave will not shut off unless the door is left open or the breaker is opened. Apparently this is not uncommon and the problem is due to internal wiring and the control board (according to GE). Estimated repair according to GE is $300. GE will not budge on the 12 month warranty. Mine failed at 13.5 months. I did some research and they are having problems with their microwaves. Things breaks but when the problem is attributed to a control board and internal wiring with 13-14 months of a GE warranty and they won't help, that is just poor product support and frankly service. March 13, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by breaks down after 14 months Not working after 14months in use, microwave is completely dead July 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BOTH PERFORM GREAT AS LONG AS THEY ARE WORKING. THIS IS OUR 2ND MICROWAVE/OVEN COMBINATION AND WE USED BOTH OF THEM VERY HARD UNTIL THE MICROWAVE BROKE AND WE NEEDED TO HAVE BOTH REPLACED. I WILL SAY THIS THAT WHEN OUR KITCHEN WAS REMODLED I WANTED A WALL OVEN AND THE MICROWAVE IN THE WALL ALSO BUT I DID NOT KNOW THAT IT WAS ONE UNIT. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE ALL IN ONE MICROWAVE/OVER ALL ONE PIECE BECAUSE THE MICROWAVE GOES AND YOUR REGULAR OVEN IS STILL WORKING PROPERLY BUT YOU CAN'T REPLACE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER AND IT IS QUITE EXPENSIVE EXPECIALLY SINCE WE ARE NOW IN OUR 70'S AND WE HAVE TO WATCH OUR DOLLARS. November 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This unit is a good replacement for the previous 25 year old unit. The dimensions except for the door width are identical . This unit is a good replacement for the previous 25 year old model of this unit. The dimensions except for the door width are identical so it fit in the same cabinet opening nicely. In our installation, the on quater inch wider door did require some trim changes. All features have worked since installation (about one month) so the initial functional quality is 100%. The appearance quality is good also. The microwave is much more powerful than the unit it replaced. The controls are easy to understand and use. The delivery service was on time and did everything as advertised. They were very careful handling the unit and left it in our kitchen ready to install. There was no shipping or handling damage. March 24, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great features! We have had our wall combo oven a couple of weeks and have fallen in love with it. It not only looks great, but it has met the cooking needs of our family. We are so excited about purchasing it! Great choice! January 19, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Used less than a month & Microwave is shot We have had this unit less than a month of which one week we were on vacation. The microwave has stopped working. While I appreciate the tech coming out within a few days he has to order a new board and install it in a week. From the reviews this board seems to be an issue that needs to be addressed. We purchased 3 GE appliances and now have had issues with two of them thus far. For such a large company with a long and storied history I simply expected better. July 25, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Had no choice. Replacement for older unit. This is a replacement. The older unit required multiple repairs until it finally failed. The microwave door on the older unit cracked at a corner. The control module had to be replaced at about 12 years (not really too bad) - a heating element in the oven had to be replaced. The new oven is slightly larger or seems to be - that's good. The microwave door may have been improved. Generally this is a pretty good appliance. August 14, 2014
