why does the washing machine sound like the drum is beating back and forth during spin cycle?

This question is from 3.6 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White

I have had the washing machine for less than a year. About 3 weeks ago (only during the spin cycle), the drum seems to bang against the inside of the washer as though it is out of kilter. I have to adjust and readjust the entire load of laundry (several times) in order for it to balance enough to finish the spin cycle. Should I call out a repairman?

I have had a similar problem with mine. Turn the water level knob to reset then try washing again. I also noticed that when I place only a few clothes to wash the spin and rinse cycle seems to be shaking the entire machine; so I will then add an additional set of clothes to wash. If the problem still persist call in the repairman.

I've had the machine for 3 months and this happened only once on a very large load which was not balanced properly. Once I adjusted the laundry around the cycle completed without any issues. Now that I'm aware of this balancing issue I'm more careful when loading the machine to ensure I distribute clothes evenly around. I think this happens because the machine has such a fast spin rate

Answer:
Hi Sunshine. You probably have the "Power Rinse" setting OFF. Turn it on to have the washer fill up to the selected water level during rinse. It will also add a spin right after the wash cycle to distribute the fabric softener, though you don't need to use fabric softener to use this cycle. Otherwise you get just a light rinse and it does not fill with water. Hope this helps!

You must push the selector knob to stop the machine, otherwise the pump will drain the tub. When ready to resume, pull the selector knob. You will hear the clicks again, as the level process readies the tub for agitation.

Ths model washer does not offer a Soak cycle. If the lid is left up during a cycle, the washer will drain out for safety.
I ould recommend to push in the knob to stop of the washer when you want it to soak. When finished, pull knob out again to restart the washer.

Yes; at least mine do so I tend to wash them with other sheets, usually 4-5, since the twisting does not seem to occur as much and the sheets come out cleaner. I think this is just a result of the way the agitator sets in motion the water during the wash.

I have not had any problem with sheets twisting, due to the strong spin. The spin cycle does a great job. If your concern is wrinkling, be sure to shake out your sheets or any other laundry, prior to placing them into the clothes dryer.

Yes, the spin cycle is extremely fast on this machine and as a result all my laundry (jeans, towels, sheets, etc.) are twisted when I open the washer to transfer laundry to my dryer. For this reason, I need to untwist and shake out all laundry before placing it into the dryer. I guess the "pro" here is the laundry is drier when the load is done with the "con" being it will be twisted.

Hello Sandy,
Thank you for your inquiry on the GE washer # GTWP1800DWW.
The washer has a maximum spin speed of 630 RPM's but this should not tangle the clothes.
The GE industry exclusive ExtrActionRibbed basket is featured on this model, . This deep ribbed design provides increased surface area to “squeeze” more water out of clothes. Consumers love it because the gentle squeezing action removes up to 25% more water extraction meaning clothes will spend less time in the dryer.
Tangled, twisted or knotted clothes are usually a result of improper sorting of wash loads. To prevent clothing from knotting and twisting:
* Avoid mixing heavy items with light items.
* Avoid putting too many or too few items in the washer.
* Make sure you set the proper water level for the size load you are doing. The water level should just cover the clothes.
* Never wrap the clothes around the agitator.
* Be sure your wash water is not too hot for the fabric.
I hope this helps!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love it! I've had mine for about 6 months and it's great! Gets my clothes clean and it's one of the last models where you can control the amount of water. For the price, it's really not too loud either but don't expect complete silence. During one cycle in particular, it actually sounds like it's beating a drum. No big deal for me since I have it in a good location! February 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Energy Efficient is not always a good thing I bought this unit to match the dryer that I had to buy, even though my old washer worked just fine. Although this washer works fine, there's 2 things on it that I don't personally like. First, the tub is VERY deep and being a short person, I can't reach the bottom to get the clothes. But the 2nd one is why I'm giving the rating. Being Energy Efficient on this unit means "no hot water". Even when you turn the knob to hot, none will every come out. I have even tried turning off my cold water supply line, and still, only warm water comes into the unit. To me, that is an issue if I cannot use hot water to kill germs on dirty dish towels and sheets. So now I have to manually add 5 gallons of hot water to each load from my bath tub for those loads. I will be replacing it when I can afford to. June 26, 2016
