Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by JUNK! DON'T BUY BEWARE!!!!!! I bought this with a matching dryer over Black Friday 2013. I thought I was getting a great deal and trusted the brand. My old dryer was a 13 year old GE Profile and I never had any problems. THIS WASHER IS AWFUL! Within 3 months the drum was shot! The repair man actually BLAMED ME for waiting a week to call and report it! It didn't go out all at once! When it started making the loud banging noise I called! One month later the towel cycle wasn't spinning all the water out of the towels and there was still soap on them! Lots of bubbles in the washer! The repair man said the motor wasn't recognizing various cycles and replaced it. Luckily all of this was done while it was still under the manufacturer warranty! I bought an extended warranty because it's junk! I can't afford a new set yet, but once I can this junk will be gone and I'll be buying a Samsung or Kenmore set! THIS IS JUNK! July 4, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a good washer Even though it has a huge tub, it only fills up a little over half way on super setting, so you can't take advantage of the size of the tub. Spin cycle on permanent press and colors is so short it barely gets any water out of the clothes. Drying times were increased by an hour because of this. However, the white cycle does spin longer and get more water out. Basically, the only good cycle is the white cycle. All the cycles only rinse the clothes for a couple minutes, and the agitation starts before the water is finished filling the tub (half-way), so soap does not get rinsed out properly. This low water usage is even when the power rinse is selected. July 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great purchase! Back-to-basics, inexpensive, reliable, gets clothes clean, QUIET washer!!! We've had our machine for three or four months now and I am pleased to tell you that we could not be happier with our purchase! This washer is a wonderful back-to-basics machine that does just what we need it to do, and it was a great value. I am a consummate shopper and tend to do a lot of research before we make a purchase. I knew that we did not want a High Efficiency washer based on the multitude of comments on this site and elsewhere about the poor cleaning quality of the HE machines and the need for the booster detergent. I knew that we wanted a machine with an agitator and a machine that was quiet. I also did not want a lot of gadgets but I -did- want a second spin cycle so that washed items spend less time in the dryer. Plus I wanted a name brand that I can trust and GE fits the bill. It is super quiet! Our utility room is right next to our kitchen table where we sit to eat breakfast, read the paper or do homework in the afternoons. The washer is almost always going during those times and we honestly could speak in whispers and still hear ourselves over it. In fact, for the first few wash cycles, until I got used to it, I would get up to make sure it was still going. You -can- hear the water swishing around during the wash cycle and there is the 'clicking' noise mentioned by others but definitely nothing intrusive. The spin cycle also is very quiet -- you can hear it 'whir' while it is spinning but it is a soft sound and not really noticeable. Additionally, the washed items are coming out super clean. I've even cut back on the amount of bleach that I use for whites because I noticed that non-white clothes seem cleaner with the new machine. (The old machine was at least 20 years old and I don't think we noticed that maybe it wasn't do such a good job anymore.) I really like the deep tub (3.9 cubic feet) and was surprised that the whole machine is physically smaller than my old machine was. I can really get a lot into each load, which is a great time saver. Conversely, the 'small' loads are just about right, too. Meaning, I don't fret that I'm wasting a lot of water OR that the clothes aren't getting clean when I run a super small load when someone has a clothing 'emergency'. in short, this is a back-to-basics blast-from-the-past old-fashioned washer! And I mean that in a good way! Even my mother, in her 70's, is very comfortable using our new washer. It has dials instead of the electronics and lights which tend to frustrate her (and me!!!) when we are at my sister's house and do a load of laundry to help out while we're there. My mother likes the washer's functionality and that it is intuitively easy to operate. I wasn't even with her the first time that she ran a load of laundry using it -- that's how easy it is to use! Older children should have no problems learning how to use this machine! Purchasing online was very quick and easy. The price was great with the sale that was going on and delivery/installation was free. The delivery men were super polite and friendly. They were very efficient and had the machine installed in a jiffy. This was another great purchasing experience from the Home Depot! August 17, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I was looking for I was looking to replace a 20 year old amana and did not want HE or a front loader. So I looked at whirlpool!, maytag, amana and the reviews were very bad. The GE reviews were good and Home Depot had the best price. Ive had it for a month and so far it's working very well and I can't believe how quiet it is. August 27, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice basic washer I did not want a washer that had too many options so this one filled the bill. I never used all of the extras that washers I purchased in the past provided - they were a waste of money for me. This GE washer does a very good of washing, has a huge capacity and is pretty quiet. The settings knob does make a subtle clicking sound as it goes through the cycle but it does not bother me. Sheets, towels and jeans all come out perfect. There is no delicate cycle but I use the light wash cycle and the clothes come out fine. The power rinse option is the same as a second rinse option and it is also for liquid fabric softener dispensing. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. August 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Like They Used to Make: An Old-School Traditional Washer Get yours before the Green Police outlaw these “deep-fill” top-loaders! I bought this GE washer in March for my 77-year-old mother. The motor of her old GE had finally quit, and she was without a washer for more than a week. I had to stop her from “just driving over to the mall to get a new one.” I knew that would be trouble with a capital T…she’d get sweet-talked into some newfangled high-efficiency or frontloader. Instead, I spent several hours online, reading product specs and reviews, checking different brands, and running searches for “best non-high-efficiency machines.” Like many of our baby boomers, Mom now has trouble with her memory and with mastering anything to do with electronics or—heaven help us—a screen display. I knew I had to find a washer that she would be able to operate instantly. I researched brands including Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore, GE and others. I looked at Sears and Home Depot online, using their “advanced search functions” to narrow down to models with all the features I deemed critical. I homed in on this GE GTWN2800DWW, and read through many of the hundreds of reviews, more than 80% of which were positive. This is why I chose it: 1. NOT a “High Efficiency” washer with microscopic water levels and “smart” technology that limits your freedom to control the functions; 2. NOT a frontloader, which limits your ability to soak or add forgotten things; 3. Traditional agitator (unlike the practically nonexistent agitators in HEs); 4. Stainless-steel basket; 5. NO lid lock (you can forget a sock and then just throw it in!); 6. YES, the water will continue to run with the lid open; 7. Large print, easy-to-read settings on the controls; 8. Easy analog dials for Load Size/Temperature/Rinse;* (*One reviewer advised always selecting “Power Rinse” to thoroughly spin the clothes) 9. Easy analog dial for 3 cycles: Whites/Perm Press/Colors. Within each cycle there are options: Heavy, Regular, Light, Drain & Spin; 10. Traditional operation of “Pull knob to start, push to stop,” meaning you can start the water running and add your detergent into the running water. Then you can leave your clothes soaking for however long you choose before starting the agitation cycle. Very handy for people who do bleach soaks, or want to do a load of handwash in the washer; 11. The 3.9 cubic-foot basket is quite large and could clearly handle multiple sheet sets or a comforter; 12. Its “Assembled in America” status was an unexpected & welcome surprise! Ordering: I got it online from Home Depot and got a $200 discount because it was on a “Special Buy.” I also bought the $60 3-year Protection Plan. Usually I decline additional plans like this, but for a major appliance it seemed like a good deal, a mere $20 per year to avoid inconvenience and expense if a problem arises. The delivery and installation was available for the very next day. The Home Depot guys easily hauled away the old machine and had this one up and running in just minutes. Now, one month after purchase, it has as worked just fine with absolutely no complaints from my mom. I did make sure to alert her to the “clicking” sounds that occur as the washer is moving from cycle to cycle (I had read this in reviews that talked about “strange sounds” and “clicking noises”). Also, several reviewers remarked that this machine was “super quiet,” but I must say it has seemed as typically noisy as any washer I’ve ever had. So there you have it! If you’re in the market for an easy-to-use washer “like they used to make,” this one seems right on the money! And it’s not just for our old folks, either. I’m considering buying one of my own, now that I’ve learned how hard it is to find a traditional washing machine. Carry on, fellow old-schoolers! April 9, 2014
