Answer:
It actually depends on your hardness level. Each grain of hardness(calcium or magnesium chloride) is the equivalent of 17.1 ppm. In an Ion exchange system the calcium or magnesium is replaced by a sodium Ion(resulting in salt). As the ability to taste salt starts at about 180 ppm if you are replacing more than 10 gpg, it is possible that you might be able to taste it.

Answer:
A softener is ion exchange. A sodium ion for a calcium ion. It does change the taste somewhat. but after the regeneration process the resin tank is flushed of any free sodium. The only time salt is in the resin tank is during regeneration. Nothing to worry about since it automatically bypasses the softener during regeneration.

If you can taste salt in the water then you might have your setting to high, get your water tested from a faucet that isn't hooked up to your softened water, and check your settings, I have this unit, and it is set for my gpg of hardness, and I can't taste any salt

Hello Doll,
Thank you for your inquiry on the GE 30,000 Grain Standard Flow Softener Model # GXSF30V.
Yes, you can add a water purifier but the simplist solution is to lower the hardness level.
If you can taste the salt you are probably using too much
I hope this helps!

I wouldn't recommend it, you could run some copper inside the house and use shark bite's for a interior install and that is pretty simple, but eventually the weather would burn this unit out faster than its life.

Hello J,
Thank you for your question on the GE water softener.

Yes, as long as it is protected from the elements, such as rain, freezing temperatures and direct sunlight. By protected we mean, if unit will be outdoors where the temperature will go below 32 degrees F, then an enclosure, similar to a 4 sided storage shed with roof, and a heat source to prevent the water in the softener from freezing. If installed outside where rain or direct sunlight will fall on the unit again, some sort of enclosure like a storage shed will be needed to protect the components, like the electronic control from being exposed to moisture. Exposure to moisture will damage the electronic controls.
I hope this helps!

The answer to your question is related to the hardness of your water, the level of iron in your water and how much water you use. The easiest way to learn the hardness of your water is to check with your local water supplier or you can have a sample tested. If you have iron in your water you can remove some of it by following the directions that come with your water softner. Having iron in your water will require you to slightly increase the capacity of your softner.
You can calculate the size of the softener by determining the number of gallons between recharges that you want. Most people want to recharge once a week. For this example use 1200 gallons between recharges, 20 grains of hardness and 5 ppm iron. The calculation is as follows:
Water softner capacity = 1,200 × (20 + 5) = 30,000 grains

30,000 grain will work just fine for you. Typically, above 30,000 grain is more than 4 bedrooms and lots of activity, like 12 loads of laundry a week plus.

Answer:
It is not "FILTERED" water. It is soft water that now contains some sodium. Short answer: "NO!" Do not water plants with soft water.

I never had an issue watering plants with softened water but realize if you have it installed to service your outside areas that you will be using more salt to keep the extra volume of water soft. I especially like to wash my car with softened water.

Hello Danusia - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you.
Soft water will not harm plants, grass or trees. If an outside faucet is connected to a water softener, this would be wasting soft water. Brine solution from the regeneration cycle, however, could be very harmful to plants and grass.
I hope this helps! Thank you for contacting GE!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent unit Replaced an older unit. Like this one better. Slender, sleek, functional, does an excellent job. March 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great so far We installed the unit in a full basement, new construction, however, there are no floor drains. So, the ceiling is 8' high, yet the instructions recommend the discharge tube be no higher than 8' feet above the floor?! Additionally. This was cause for some concern but we installed it as we needed and it ended up being 8.3' above the floor into existing PVC drain pipe. Works perfectly. The unit comes standard with 1" water inlet/outlets. I have 3/4" PEX piping. That took a little shopping to get the right conversion, once the critical plumbing was completed, set up and programming was spot on. The unit needs four bags of salt to begin, but now the unit says I don't need additional for 300 days! Cool. We have moderate hardness, 3000+ square feet, 3 bathrooms. It is all that we need.l May 17, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Water Softener super easy install 5 stars ! We installed this outside near intake water to house as we live in Florida. We attached a water filter 1st inexpensive $50 unit from Home Depot . Install in afternoon used all pvc fitting . After month of use , wow what a difference with our water. Shower soaps up quicker , no itchy skin after, hair is silky , hands and face feel better. Our 2 labs dogs also give this 2 paws up! Super value easy set up , we added 4 bags of salt and now we are good for 265 days before refill. Look no further this is a super unit for under $500 total installed far better than we found comps anywhere else. May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Waiting on Resuls We just installed this unit. Our water hardness was a 22 so we're waiting to see if we notice a difference. Install was a bit daunting as we had to cut into the water loop that was provided in our new home. Towels and a bucket are highly recommended! Also FYI, if you have a loop in your garage with a drain sticking out of the wall you will need to plumb a drain system for this unit.. May 24, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by VERY SATISFIED!!! Purchased and installed this softener about 3 months ago. I can't believe the difference in the water quality. I took my time and installed it myself with a pre-filter. I would definitely recommend this unit. GOODBYE dry skin! The water tastes great also. November 27, 2015
