Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by need a new softener. this one is dead I bought this GE softener 1.25 yrs ago. we had water flow issues and now i find that the water softener was the issue. I turned on the bypass and its all good. opened the cover and the unit is full of water. that is an indication that the resin tank is cracked. I really wonder if the negative ratings are making it onto this site. DONT BUY GE. BUY EXTENDED WARRANTY IF YOU DO! SAVE YOUR RECEIPT! June 8, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Water Softener I purchased this water softener at Home Depot 13 months ago. It just quit and no warranty. Go figure. When it worked it worked really well but now it does not work at all. Thanks GE for a 1,000.00 bill. Works out to 90 a month. November 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, but not a DIY I read other reviews before deciding to purchase this water softener, and one of my goals was to save money. Our previous home had a Rainsoft water softener, which we were very happy with, however it was ridiculously expensive (almost 10x more than the GE). The cost included installation and setup, but it was still a lot of money for a simple device. It basically filters the water as it comes into the home, bonding the hard minerals to a resin column, and then flushes those minerals from the column using salt water after a set volume of water has passed through it. For anyone thinking they can install this on their own, I would say don't even try it! Unless you live in a brand new home, and/or have a plumber's license, this is a huge undertaking! We ultimately called GE and had one of their service companies come out to install it for us, and it took a little over 3 hours for a professional, with all the tools and equipment at the ready. There was no way we could have done it on our own. That said, it was well worth the $500 extra to have it up and running with no concerns about leaking or damage to the house. The actual product seems great - it is much quieter than the other brand, and does the same thing (again, water softening is not rocket science). My daughter's excema was MUCH better after only one bath in soft water. You will use less soap, have softer skin and hair, and it is much easier on your clothes in the wash. I wouldn't live without a softener again, and this is a great product for the money.... just hire a professional to have it installed :-) Oh, and save yourself $100 by buying the smaller unit - we have 4 adults and 2 small children in the house, and it recharges once a week. The only difference with a larger unit, is that it may recharge less frequently, but it doesn't really matter. With the smaller unit, you won't 'run out' of soft water - it will just recharge more frequently. You'll never make up the $100 in savings. December 30, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Water Softener Upgrade! My water softener quit working and Yuk, could not stand to even take a shower as my city water from Aqua Ohio is 12 gpg, i.e., very hard... Went to Home Depot, the plumbing guys were extremely helpful in the Boardman, Ohio store, suggested new plumbing hookup flex pipes that just clamped on my existing 3/4" plumbing pipes and hooked right up to the new water softener... Ran the included overflow and recharge drain lines over to the hose leading to my basement floor drain, filled the salt bin up to level 7, did the setup as instructed on the enclosed instructions and bam, I was back in business within an hour after a recharge was complete... Very simple to install and it works like a champ... best part, my Boardman, Ohio Home Depot even had a big guy help put it in my trunk so when I got home I just lowered it onto a dolley and wheeled the unit into my basement... Overall, very simple to install... May 22, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lovin' my water softener So far it appears to be doing what was promised. Water feels great and I am using less products for washing dishes, showering, laundering, shampooing, etc. The water softener unit is sleek and looks like it was custom fit for the area it is in. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good The softener is very easy to install and set up. I like the that the display shows you when water is flowing. It performs very well. The softener also has a very nice appearance and fits right in with my other fixtures. January 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent softener, easy to install I purchased this product to replace a Kenmore water softener that was old and leaky. The GE softener was simple to install. I hard plumbed copper directly to the bypass valve assembly. After filling with salt, I ran the unit through a regeneration and sanitized it as instructed by the manual. I've been getting soft water since and am very happy with the performance. The unit is very simple to set up and program. One caution: the lid of the unit is hinged in such a way that you will need about 2 inches of clearance in front of the unit for the lid to swing open. January 20, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Packaging, broken parts Plastic components broken due to poor protection/rough handling. Not extremely well-made, but does the job. Installation is straight-forward, but you end-up doing a lot of unnecessary assembly (that should have been done by GE). I would definitely rate it no better than "average." July 21, 2015
