Answer:
It actually depends on your hardness level. Each grain of hardness(calcium or magnesium chloride) is the equivalent of 17.1 ppm. In an Ion exchange system the calcium or magnesium is replaced by a sodium Ion(resulting in salt). As the ability to taste salt starts at about 180 ppm if you are replacing more than 10 gpg, it is possible that you might be able to taste it.

Answer:
A softener is ion exchange. A sodium ion for a calcium ion. It does change the taste somewhat. but after the regeneration process the resin tank is flushed of any free sodium. The only time salt is in the resin tank is during regeneration. Nothing to worry about since it automatically bypasses the softener during regeneration.

If you can taste salt in the water then you might have your setting to high, get your water tested from a faucet that isn't hooked up to your softened water, and check your settings, I have this unit, and it is set for my gpg of hardness, and I can't taste any salt

Hello Doll,
Thank you for your inquiry on the GE 30,000 Grain Standard Flow Softener Model # GXSF30V.
Yes, you can add a water purifier but the simplist solution is to lower the hardness level.
If you can taste the salt you are probably using too much
I hope this helps!

I wouldn't recommend it, you could run some copper inside the house and use shark bite's for a interior install and that is pretty simple, but eventually the weather would burn this unit out faster than its life.

Yes, as long as it is protected from the elements, such as rain, freezing temperatures and direct sunlight. By protected we mean, if unit will be outdoors where the temperature will go below 32 degrees F, then an enclosure, similar to a 4 sided storage shed with roof, and a heat source to prevent the water in the softener from freezing. If installed outside where rain or direct sunlight will fall on the unit again, some sort of enclosure like a storage shed will be needed to protect the components, like the electronic control from being exposed to moisture. Exposure to moisture will damage the electronic controls.
I hope this helps!

Will a "loop" be necessary?

I don't exactly understand what comes with this $400 pricing. We're getting our home built and they are recommending we install the "loop" at $360 vs. getting their Culligan water softener system and the loop installed which would be a hit of $1790 to our budget.
If we already have this "loop", would we be covered by just purchasing this unit?

Thanks!

Hi Brandy- This is Sue at GE Appliances. A softwater loop is the preferred method of installation for our water softeners. We encourage you to contact a Home Depot Sales Associate for pricing details at 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337). Thanks for checking with us!

If you already have the "loop" installed, I would definitely buy the $400 unit. Culligan seems to be overpriced. The $400 softener I have is working perfectly fine and I can't see the Culligan working any better. My softener is very quiet and uses about half the salt as my older unit. It comes complete with everything you need for installation. I hope this helps.

Water softener are normally installed on a drop off of the cold water supply with valves that allow either the water softener to be used or to be bypassed. This allows very easy replacement if needed.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Water softner worked and was not hard to install The softener was not hard at all to install, I was concerned about the O-rings and the plastic clips. In the end they worked just fine and made the install very easy. I did use the flexible connector that HD sells and I had the unit installed in no time. The only suggestion I would have is if they made it so the discharge pipe could be run 9 feet above the floor, I would have been able to run it over the garage and then down into a utility sink that is on the other side of my garage. But it worked fine I just built a dry well outside a few feet from the house and discharged the water into that. I had the unit shipped to my home, the fact that it was no charge made it so much easier since the unit is not a light weight, and only had to move it a few feet to where it was installed.
