Answer:
The installation of the outlet is permanent, however, it is meant to be used for temporary power via connecting your home to a generator during utility outage. You must also install a generator interlock system to prevent back feeding the utility company. This is a code and a safety issue. Please consult a licensed electrical contractor for this.

I want to install an inlet box going to my transfer switch, but I want it outside, vs being in the garage, for the shortest run to the transfer switch and to keep carbon monoxide aware from doors and windows. Can this box be used in rain / snow / storm situations ?

Answer:
Yes, this would technically be a plug and not "R" as in receptacle. It is a reverse outlet.

Hello RH, I’m Newf from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
The device is an L14-30P, (male), and requires the female end of a 30 amp generator cord.
I hope this helps, Newf.

Hi Carman605, I finally reached a GE technical person, who stated that yes, you can use this inlet with 6-3 wire with a ground. The lug is big enough.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 21 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by impressive build quality I have just received this in the mail today. It is not yet installed but my first impression is that this is one very solid product. I checked out the more common inlet which was stocked at the store and this one is much larger than that one….but at this point I feel that I chose the better inlet for the money. This one feels virtually bombproof…..it's all metal construction except for the actual plug. The heft and build quality are the primary reason I prefer this one, and the second reason would be the metal door that covers the connection and several inches below thus making it rainproof while in use. It's comforting knowing that there will be no water intrusion no matter what Mother Nature throws its way. It's hard to believe that this inlet was actually around $4 cheaper than the one I saw at the store. If you don't mind the larger size I would suggest you give this box a look. October 28, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Huge Box but Weathertight while in use! This box is huge! It is as tall as my meter box and about half as wide. Of course, I knew this going in and that is why I bought it. I like the fact that the cover can be closed while the cord is plugged in. No plastic cover with spring to break. This cover is all metal. It has rounded edges so the cord doesn't snag. Don't buy a different inlet box. This is the one you want! October 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Southern Life Saver Our home had one of the old style generator inputs that you could not use if it was wet or raining. With this new plug, I can plug in the generator cable and run it to my tool shed. Once you close the lid, it covers the plug and cable connection keeping it dry even during a hurricane. Priceless to have my home powered by my generator before, during and after the storm. May 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Product is just what I needed to connect to my well during power outages. July 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Value for the Money This power outlet is an excellent value for the money. It has plenty of room in the box for wiring and this particular unit has a cover that provides "in use" protection from the elements. I recommend this box for anyone wanting to connect a generator to their home. Also, installing a generator interlock to prevent backfeeding the utility is a code and safety requirement. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Big, but high quality If you want a weather tight box, then this is the one. Yes, it is much larger than some of the other inlets, but this one is weather tight even with the generator plug connected. This seems important as you might be running your generator in the rain. The 10/3 wire connects up easily to this box with screw terminals. It looks good enough closed and I won't really notice it until I need it! January 2, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by why would spend for a stand by Great for connecting portable generator to house no need for expensive stand by December 12, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product is great. I had made several trips to supply houses to find a electrical box so i could attach my generator to our house. Then finding this one line i decided to try it. The shipping was super fast and wiring into main panel was as simple as it could get. I have tried it and it works great. i may never use it for a power outage, but i'm ready now. Thanks December 13, 2011
