Customer Questions & Answers

How much heat is produced from unit?

Asked by: Thom
Correct answer: HOT! 109 F (in a basement in Syracuse, NY). Adds 2500 BTU/hour sensible heat to remove 30 pints of water/day. Summary: Exhaust air is 109 F in an 82 F basement (that's +27 F). It adds 2500 BTUs of energy as sensible heat, while removing up to 1285 BTU of latent heat. Basement used to be 60-65 F without dehumidifier at this time of the year (end of August, in Syracuse, NY). Now it is 82 F. Last night was 66 F, and it is 76 F outdoors as I write this, at 2 pm. Important: You can't measure exhaust air by holding your hand on it. Fan is extremely fast, it can transfer energy with a smaller change in temperature, and your skin is fooled by wind, can't detect temperature correctly. Instead, put your room thermometer over the exhast (upside down if colored liquid reservoir is on top), hold it down for a minute (hold from a far end, away from the reservoir) so it won't fly away and break. Obviously, don't block the fan, make minimal impact on air flow, if you can. I got 109 F. Total energy consumed: 1245 BTU/hour Increase in sensible heat @ 30-pints/day dehumidification: 2530 BTU/hour Decrease in latent heat (vapor removed, doesn't change air temparature): 1285 BTU/hour MartinR gave us 1245 BTU from electricity consumed. Chas48 said if it dehumidifies 1 pint (~ 1 lb) of water per hour, that's 970 BTU of latent heat. Unit is rated at 30 pints a day = 1.25 pints an hour, which is 1285 BTU/hour But as Adam pointed out, latent heat removed by cooling vapor to water is then added by dehumidifier as sensible heat into the room -- it heats up the room, increases the air temperature. So Chas48 is *WRONG* in subtracting these numbers to get heating effect. In fact, if he had reemoved 1285 from 1245, we would get -40 BTU. And clearly, this unit is not cooling anything. Dehumidifier versus AC: A small window AC unit is often 6000 BTU, and many small AC units focus more on sensible heat than latent heat (lower air temperature first, not worry about converting vapor to water). Running this dehumidifier made our basement quite warm.

There is a light that indicates the filter needs cleaning and I can't find any instructions

I have no idea of how to do that. Need assistance.
Asked by: boohoo
This is a washable air filter. Just remove it and either wash off the lint build-up, or take the filter outside and give it a few hard shakes and that is really all it needs. I've never washed mine, no need to.

Red light

Why does the red light go on after I have attached a hose to drain moisture? At times even when the bucket is attached this light goes on and the dehumidifier fails to run.
Asked by: Jwd
Hello Jwd - this is Nancy at GE Appliances. I'm sorry to hear that the red light is not going out on your dehumidifier after attaching the drain hose. Please check that the garden hose where it attaches to the unit is not loose or have a bad connection as this can cause leaking into the bucket and through the hose at the same time. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

I want to install in the masterbedroom which has window condensation problems in winter. Will the noise interfere with sleep?

Asked by: alangski
It might. Ours is in a room where we watch television and we like to turn it off when watching. It has three fan settings, The lowest is still a little loud. You could get used to it, though.

To prevent this from happening, I run a dehumidifier in my master bathroom for about three to four hours in the evening after everyone has taken their showers. This GE dehumidifier is replacing a five year old Frigidaire that was recalled by the manufacturer - because it could possibly catch on fire. (Yikes!) The GE dehumidifier is fully assembled - there was nothing to put together - I just plugged it in and it is running now. I really like that I am able to set the humidity level and it turns on and off automatically to maintain the level selected. I also like that it will notify me when the filter needs changing. I'm pretty sure that I should have cleaned the filter in my old dehumidifier more often than I did. I hope that this new one is as reliable as my other GE appliances are - only time will tell.

They work great at first, but all 3, after a few months no longer read the appropriate humidity and stop pulling water from the air. I clean the filters regularly, put in humid environments to test and no matter how humid, warm, cold or whatever it claims its 40% and the bucket is empty even after a few days. Fan continues to run the entire time... but doesnt pul water from the air. Use a different brand, this is worthless.

Take a lot of water out of the air in the basement and does it will. It helped remove the odor in the basement. I'm glad it has no alarm on it to tell you it is full of water. I just go down once a day and empty it. Some people, similar to clothes in the dryer, like to be told that it is done, so maybe an option could be added for those who like to know. For me, It does such a good job, I just know I need to go down once a day.

It is in the bathroom to help decrease the amount of humidity in the air. It does help and the tank fills up fast. I do like the option of using the delay off button turn allow my dehumidifier to run for 2 hours or 4 hours and then automatically shut off. I have had the dehumidifier over a month and think it is great!

The dehumidifier does a great job and is very simple to operate and empty. The only issue I have with the entire process is the 1st unit was delivered via UPS and was damaged. I took it to the nearest Home Depot store to exchange it for an undamaged unit, but had to reorder a replacement unit. I had ordered this unit for my son who lives in Long Beach, CA, we had the 1st unit sent to our home in Irvine, Ca about 40 miles away. When I went to the local Home Depot in Long Beach to exchange the damaged unit, I was told I had to reorder a replacement. I wanted it delivered to the Long Beach store for pickup by my son so I wouldn't have to drive the 40 miles to deliver it myself. I was told if I ordered it and had it sent to the Long Beach store for pick up it would take 10 days to 2 weeks for delivery. However if I had it delivered to my home in Irvine, CA, I'd get it in 3 days. I had it delivered to Irvine and drove the 40 miles to my son's in Long Beach.

When it works, it works well, filling the tank after about 8 hours of operation in a 74-degree room at relative humidity from 50-60%. The intake is on the front and it blows air up through the top, which allows it to be positioned fairly close to a wall. It’s small size is great for a smaller house (1,500 square feet). However, this our second GE 30-pint dehumidifier. The previous unit’s compressor stopped working after less than 90 days. (Home Depot issued a full refund.) This second unit has started to exhibit some of the same symptoms after only a month: The fan will run, but the compressor—even set at continuous operation in a damp room—will not turn on, even after hours of operation. The solution has been to unplug the unit from the wall for 30 seconds or so. Plug it in and turn it on. The symptoms seem to be related to the electronics in the unit. The wheels on the unit make it easy to move on hardwood floors, but it feels a little top-heavy on carpeting. I don’t trust the plastic handle on the top for carrying. It feels underbuilt for the weight. The only features we use are continuous operation and fan speed adjustments (low, medium, high). I’d pay twice as much for a dependable dehumidifier. Based on reliability, I would not recommend this dehumidifier.

One of my two Peltier dehumidifiers broke from Amazon which weren't keeping up within my rainy microclimate anyway. This unit has pulled water out of my air to such an extent I am no longer losing heat through window condensation. This means less heat transmitted through my windows. After more than a week I'm still emptying mine full twice per day which is obviously a lot of water. I might stick a garden hose on soon. Best of all, this unit has solved the resulting former moisture, mold, and mildew problem which was plaguing my tool section. Plus no more water dripping from my ceiling amazingly enough. Five stars well earned. GE has saved my large single wide.
