Questions & Answers

How much heat is produced from unit?

Asked by: Thom
Correct answer: HOT! 109 F (in a basement in Syracuse, NY). Adds 2500 BTU/hour sensible heat to remove 30 pints of water/day. Summary: Exhaust air is 109 F in an 82 F basement (that's +27 F). It adds 2500 BTUs of energy as sensible heat, while removing up to 1285 BTU of latent heat. Basement used to be 60-65 F without dehumidifier at this time of the year (end of August, in Syracuse, NY). Now it is 82 F. Last night was 66 F, and it is 76 F outdoors as I write this, at 2 pm. Important: You can't measure exhaust air by holding your hand on it. Fan is extremely fast, it can transfer energy with a smaller change in temperature, and your skin is fooled by wind, can't detect temperature correctly. Instead, put your room thermometer over the exhast (upside down if colored liquid reservoir is on top), hold it down for a minute (hold from a far end, away from the reservoir) so it won't fly away and break. Obviously, don't block the fan, make minimal impact on air flow, if you can. I got 109 F. Total energy consumed: 1245 BTU/hour Increase in sensible heat @ 30-pints/day dehumidification: 2530 BTU/hour Decrease in latent heat (vapor removed, doesn't change air temparature): 1285 BTU/hour MartinR gave us 1245 BTU from electricity consumed. Chas48 said if it dehumidifies 1 pint (~ 1 lb) of water per hour, that's 970 BTU of latent heat. Unit is rated at 30 pints a day = 1.25 pints an hour, which is 1285 BTU/hour But as Adam pointed out, latent heat removed by cooling vapor to water is then added by dehumidifier as sensible heat into the room -- it heats up the room, increases the air temperature. So Chas48 is *WRONG* in subtracting these numbers to get heating effect. In fact, if he had reemoved 1285 from 1245, we would get -40 BTU. And clearly, this unit is not cooling anything. Dehumidifier versus AC: A small window AC unit is often 6000 BTU, and many small AC units focus more on sensible heat than latent heat (lower air temperature first, not worry about converting vapor to water). Running this dehumidifier made our basement quite warm.

There is a light that indicates the filter needs cleaning and I can't find any instructions

I have no idea of how to do that. Need assistance.
Asked by: boohoo
This is a washable air filter. Just remove it and either wash off the lint build-up, or take the filter outside and give it a few hard shakes and that is really all it needs. I've never washed mine, no need to.

Red light

Why does the red light go on after I have attached a hose to drain moisture? At times even when the bucket is attached this light goes on and the dehumidifier fails to run.
Asked by: Jwd
Hello Jwd - this is Nancy at GE Appliances. I'm sorry to hear that the red light is not going out on your dehumidifier after attaching the drain hose. Please check that the garden hose where it attaches to the unit is not loose or have a bad connection as this can cause leaking into the bucket and through the hose at the same time. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

I want to install in the masterbedroom which has window condensation problems in winter. Will the noise interfere with sleep?

Asked by: alangski
It might. Ours is in a room where we watch television and we like to turn it off when watching. It has three fan settings, The lowest is still a little loud. You could get used to it, though.

A solid, well-built device that I have used in my basement for the last two years.  It does what I need it to do and maintains a relatively constant humidity level.  Living in Northern Virginia, this is an absolute must as the humidity is intolerable during the summer.  This product receives near continuous use from early-May to mid-September.  I have it run into a condensate pump, which handles removal of the water so that it can remain on indefinitely.  It has not failed, and I have not been terribly proactive with my maintenance.  I periodically clean the filter, but otherwise it is a plug and play unit.  I employ this unit in conjunction with two others in my admittedly rather large, rather poorly insulated basement.  It's an integral part of the team that I've located in my home gym, a place I spent a fair bit of time.  It performs excellently, pulling water and keeping the environment at an acceptable humidity.  Measured against an electronic humidity gauge, it usually gets the level to about what I set it at although there have been a few times where the humidity gauge shows the room at a humidity higher than the unit.  All in all, it's close enough that I accept its performance. Last year I used this as a stand-alone device reliant on the onboard bucket to catch water.  That is probably not the best way to use it.  In fact, I am very glad to have switched to coupling a drain hose with this unit for this season as it was not very well suited to stand-alone use.  The 30 pint bucket fills up extremely quickly and fast became an absolute chore to empty.  I was emptying the bucket 2 to 3 times a day last year, which is not ideal.  While I did not experience any of the issues other reviewers noted regarding the off switch failing, time will tell if the continuous cycle I now have is a long-term solution.

I wanted a new dehumidifier that looked good to keep in my updated bathroom in the basement and this fits the bill but I think that is what it only does. I have 2 older Kenmore dehumidifiers and they take ten times the moisture out of the air compared to this unit. I have had the new unit running for 2 weeks straight with it set at sometimes at 40 and 50% and it still hasn't moved the level indicator in the tank. It does take water out of the air but I wouldn't trust it in an emergency.

I live in a 900 sq. ft. apt. and the HVAC system does not remove humidity. You can set the AC to 70 and wake up in a cold sweat, That is because these very budget AC units do not feature "accumulator or dryers" to remove the humidity from the air hence; You can set the AC to 70 and wake up in a cold sweat. OK This dehumidifier 30-pint from GE is amazing. I can run it 9 hours and empty the tank (upon the built in alarm.) This device reliably removes 30 pints of water/humidity from my living space every 2.5 days. 1000 sq ft or less, buy it.

Very frustrated at first due to hose attachment leaking in to reservoir and shutting unit off as opposed to running continuously as it should with hose attached. Returned unit for replacement. Second unit performed the same way. Saw unit sold with short hose, replaced my 25' hose with 9' all good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Would recommend to anyone I've read some reviews and some people got a few lemons but I've had mine for 4yrs now and it still does the job. My basement is half underground and has a high water table. No issues since I've had it. Noticeable difference when I walk from my basement to the garage. Great product

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Dehumidifier This dehumidifier did everything I have wanted it to do! It has helped take all the moisture out of my basement, got rid of the nasty moisture loving bugs, and the stank basement odor! Very thankful that my basement no longer smells. Great products. I will always support GE.

To prevent this from happening, I run a dehumidifier in my master bathroom for about three to four hours in the evening after everyone has taken their showers. This GE dehumidifier is replacing a five year old Frigidaire that was recalled by the manufacturer - because it could possibly catch on fire. (Yikes!) The GE dehumidifier is fully assembled - there was nothing to put together - I just plugged it in and it is running now. I really like that I am able to set the humidity level and it turns on and off automatically to maintain the level selected. I also like that it will notify me when the filter needs changing. I'm pretty sure that I should have cleaned the filter in my old dehumidifier more often than I did. I hope that this new one is as reliable as my other GE appliances are - only time will tell.
