Customer Questions & Answers

Is it 'textured white" or "smooth white"?

Textured. Like bad vinyl flooring.

Do I have to hook up the water supply for this refrigerator to run properly.

Asked by: Jane
Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. You do not have to hook the refrigerator up to a water line in order for the refrigerator to work properly. Just be sure that you keep the icemaker turned off. You may also want to keep the dispenser controls locked with the "Control Lock" pad on the front of the dispenser. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Is water chilled when dispensed?

I read a customer review that said water is room temperature when coming from in-door ice/water dispenser. I want chilled water. Is this an individual issue or is refrigerator designed this way?
Asked by: patc
In my experience, the water is cool, but not cold. Personally, I do not add ice to water I dispense from the door.

Customer Reviews

33.5 in. W 21.9 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator in Stainless Steel is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 184.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ice maker issues - dead on arrival I chose this model/product due to to choice of only three brands with a side by side for 33.5 in or smaller fridge. I looked at reviews of other brands and saw no negative comments. However this one had the ice maker's crushed ice feature not working on arrival. Everything thing else works, it is quiet has great ice production, good delivery and setup by Home Depot. But I am disappointed by GE service of this. GE came out and the tech had to order the part and said will ship it to your house and install next week. It never happened I had to call GE myself the tech showed that the previous service was competed (wrong). Now I am two days taken off wasted and the ice maker not fixed yet. Why isn't this tested by GE before shipping to consumer? It is not like you can test the ice maker when installed since you have no ice then!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too Noisy The refrigerator is fine. It keeps things cold without much effort. I am not fond of the pebbled finish or the space-consuming ice dispenser, but I knew what I was getting. My only complaint is the noise. When the compressor starts it produces a high pitched whine like a dog whistle. It goes right through you. I had a GE tech come and look at it and he said, "Get used to it. All GE's are like that." Yuck! I have ordered some sound proofing material to put in the compressor cavity. Maybe that will fix it. If not, I'll give it to Goodwill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good with our refrigerator We have had our refrigerator for just about a month. We are very happy with the look of it in black, had to really hunt for a textured door one, finally found this GE. Not sure why people seem to really like the smooth fronts, they scratch so easily & show prints. This GE is quite nice looking, doesn't look cheap like some other brands we've seen. Our new GE is about 22 cu ft, so a little small but we were dictated by the size of our opening. People always complain about the ice spitting out everywhere, but you need to hold the glass up to the opening, no problem then. It is pretty quiet running, very pleased. Hopefully this new one will last a good while.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Odd-sized Overpriced Ill-Finished - but it works Odd sized replacement that would fit and was available (other brands back-ordered). Identical with almost no innovation in 10+ years to the dying GE model it replaced! Works, is quieter than the 10-year old replaced model, but has worse finish on the doors, hinges, shelves, overall alignments - you name it. Disappointed at the absolute lack of innovation or improvement, the ridiculously high price (larger fridges are cheaper because there are more choices/competitors; only 3 available in this odd size, only this GE for immediate delivery!) I wish I could redo the kitchen and get a cheaper, larger, different fridge instead! The only saving graces - quiet, cold, stays on very little (the first utility bill should confirm energy savings) and has a working ice maker (the old GE fridge's ice maker broke 5+ years ago). If this sounds like a reach to say something nice, it is!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Product has many good features but one really bad one. When shopping for a refrigerator in this price range, I decided on this model because of it's appearance and features. I had been advised by a friend who owns an appliance repair business to buy American because the repair experience on foreign-made models was not good. I am satisfied with the performance of the refrigerator so far except the ice dispenser. The ice dispenser throws ice everywhere. It is unlike any ice dispenser I have used on any other refrigerator. I contacted GE about this problem and they told me this was "normal". I was shocked the company would have such a casual attitude about a problem which I consider to be a major issue (one which would have prevented my purchasing the refrigerator if I had known how poorly this feature operates). Ice on the floor everytime the ice dispenser is used is NOT NORMAL. Because of this problem and the attitude of the company, I would not buy this model again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK for the price but cheep design I bought this sight unseen. It is a small unit so anybody over 6' tall or otherwise looking at it from above will see the top of the doors....obviously. What I did not know is this is also where the sheet metal seems of the door meet, and GE chose not to cover the seams with trim. This GE design decision leaves white door insulation visible between the seams. I thought it was a manufacturing error, but GE customer care could not give me a definitive answer (think talking to health insurance company). GE’s only answer was to return it. An astetic problem at worse, but now you know to look at the top of the doors. GE uses the same design for larger units.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job I like the layout of the interior, and I like the water/ice function in the door. As I've seen in other reviews, you can see some minimal amounts of insulation on the top side of door panels, but only if you're taller than the door. I've had this model for ~ 2 months. If the water sits in system for extended time (say overnight), the water served in door will have a plastic taste to it. The initial instructions of running a few gallons of water through system did not eliminate the plastic taste. It seems to be getting slowly better with time, but expect it to take a while. I normally run a glass or two of water and dump it out, then taste is normal.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from very frustrating we've owned this fridge for two years and though it looks good, soon after purchase the ice maker started messing up and within 6 months the water line leaked and for over a year and a half now we have been chipping ice out of the freezer and breaking ice cubes apart. We also had to replace the auger motor that froze and the plastic auger broke after little use and no longer pulls ice forward. GE offers very little warranty service and charged me over a $100 to look at the fridge... all I got from the technician was the parts I needed to buy on Ebay, becuase he would have charged over $400 for work and parts that take about 30 minutes to replace. I bought this fridge so that I had an ice maker that worked and that's the one thing we don't have.
