Customer Questions & Answers

Is it noisy? I've read reviews of other GE fridges being noisy.

Asked by: jc
Mine makes different noises than my previous models, but nothing too distracting. I've pretty much gotten used to it already.

Water dispenser

On GE's website it states this model has an internal water dispenser, but here it doesn't show one. Can you please verify which is true?
Asked by: Kaci
It is on the left wall inside. Very small, just a little tube that sits in a little indentation.

33 in. W 24.8 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator in Slate is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 379.

If you are reading this review my guess is that you too fall into the "the opening for our fridge is too small for the size of current day refrigerators" group. I researched refrigerators for months trying to find a "non apartment" style fridge that would work. Not only were we 3/4" short of the standard 36" width, we were also 2 inches short of the 69" height that allows for a greater selection. How we solved the problem. One night after becoming increasingly frustrated by the inability to find a new fridge to replace the one we literally had duct taped together, we put reason out the window, stood on kitchen chairs and removed the "above refrigerator cabinet" that was impeding our "height" restrictions. We loaded the cabinet into the car and asked a local cabinet maker to match the cabinet exactly, just 4 inches shorter. He agreed. Height restriction solved (and seriously how often do you use that cabinet anyway?). Our kitchen design did not allow the "width" restriction to be changed without an entire kitchen redo which is what led us to this model. Color: I just do not understand the "stainless steel" appliance craze. The fingerprints that stainless allows drive me crazy. I didn't want white or black so that led me to "slate". It is fantastic. It does not show fingerprints and looks very classy in my kitchen. Love it. I just wish GE would have gone the extra mile and made the handles out of a fingerprint free material as well. But I can live with wiping those down daily. Bottom Freezer: If you have not previously had a bottom freezer let me warn you that this does take some getting used too. It does not bother me anywhere near as much as it does my husband. He hates it. I tolerate it. One issue is the HUGE ice bin which literally takes up 1/2 of the top drawer. We wouldn't use this much ice in a month and have no need for this much "available" ice. I wish GE would have reduced the size of the bin to allow more space for "quick grab freezer items". (I am attempting to find a smaller bin but no luck so far). French Doors: If you have not previously had french doors let me tell you it will take seconds to fall in love. At first I was upset that due to space restrictions I had to go with the 33" but now...I can't imagine why anyone would need to go to the 36". The 33" is huge. Full party platters, defrost a frozen turkey and it all fits with plenty of room left over for daily items. LOVE the french doors. Water dispenser: I chose the inside rather than outside water dispenser model. I don't like how much door space water dispensers take up. Bad decision. If I could take it back I would buy the outside dispenser model. Because of how roomy the french door fridge is loosing door space is no longer an issue and having to open the fridge to get water is a pain. The built in water filter is a big plus and takes up very little room. Doors failing to close: I was surprised to read that so many people have such a problem with this. The manual clearly states that the french door fridge is intentionally shipped with un-level doors. I won't go into it as you can read the manual as well as I can but clear (and easy) instructions are given on how to "re-adjust and level" the doors to allow for easy opening and closing. NOTE: Our installer did not do this for us as this step is done AFTER fridge has been filled with food.

I know some reviewers find it to be loud, I cannot say that about my particular unit. My 2 critiques are as follows: The interior water dispenser is poorly designed; it honestly looks and functions like an afterthought that GE just slapped in the unit. I had low expectations of it when I bought the refrigerator and was hoping I would be proven wrong. Unfortunately, I was not. The button located under the rubber boot is difficult to keep engaged. You have to keep a lot of pressure on it to keep the water flowing. Move your finger a little and it shuts off. It's particularly difficult for my kids as they don't have strength or dexterity of an adult. Additionally, you have to wedge your glass, water bottle or whatever under the spout or you may spill water. I wanted to purchase the Whirlpool WRF532SMBM (available at Sears - it's worth a look) instead of this unit because that interior water dispenser has a far superior design (be it a very basic, just applied common sense design in my opinion). I opted for this GE because the 2 extra cubic feet of this unit were of greater benefit to my family's overall needs. I really think GE needs to address this and offer a retro fit correction part like on the Whirlpool. One other thing, the water dispenser is LOUD when it shuts off, like no other water dispenser I have owned or used at other people's homes. This is something you don't learn until you buy it, as water is never hooked up on the display units. The other issue I have is the way the freezer door closes. If you don't push it from dead center, it slides in kind of uneven and you need to give it a second bump to get it closed. Visually it looks closed even though it's not. This is something my family and I are learning to be mindful of. Over all a great product, especially for the rather limited choices in the 33" wide french door range. By great I mean it is spacious enough for my family of 4, is well lit, food and beverages seem to keep at a proper temperature and looks nice. I hope that GE will read, respond and take some action on this feedback as they are so close to a great product and are missing the mark on easy things.

Very quiet. Ice maker makes a little noise when its making ice. None of the loud cracking popping noises that are mentioned in a lot of refrigerator reviews. That was our fear. I love not having to bend over every time I need something from the fridge. You use the fridge way more often than the freezer so it only makes sense to have it on top. The doors hold a lot of stuff including wine bottles. Door shelves and main shelves' heights are adjustable. The lighting is excellent in both sections. The ice maker is internal and it has an on/off switch. Refrigerator temperature setting is simple. We'd buy it again. Hope it lasts as long as our last GE refrigerator. (20 years) We love the slate color it is beautiful and yes you can stick magnets on it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Fridge with Some Issues The fridge looks great and has enough space for our needs. Problem is, a month after we got it, the freezer started making noise. After doing some online research I started looking at some suggestions and the back wall of the freezer was iced up. I defrosted and it worked a little better foir a short time. I then called for service. I had some ideas of the cause since others had the problem. When the technician came though, he said it was low on refrigerant (probably from the factory he said). I was skeptical at the diagnosis but that was about 3 months ago and all is well. If not for that problem, I'd give it 5 stars.

I love the slate color; it brings out the warm tones in my stone back-splash in the kitchen. It is a little deeper than my previous refrigerator but the design allows for more storage. These appliances have turned my once drab little kitchen into an elegant space.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DESIGN FLAW--RETURNED AFTER 5 DAYS We waited three weeks to receive this fridge--that's how much we wanted to like it! Sadly after only 5 days we are returning it due to a major design flaw. The temperature controls are mounted on the top of the frame, flush with the fridge where the doors close. When the door closes, it changes the temperature control to the freezer or fridge! Each time I close the door, it kicks the temp up one degree or TURNS THE FRIDGE OFF! We awoke yesterday morning to find a freezer full of thawed food. Simply unacceptable, and GE customer service is not much better. Easy return.

Very quiet and maintains temp well. You have to give it several days from start-up to let everything inside come to the temperature. After that it does real well. The inside water dispenser takes a little getting used to, but we rarely used the water-in-the-door on the old refrig. anyway. So far this refrigerator has preformed as specified.

Lots of space for everything, and the bottom drawer is the best!!! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the freezer compartment is very noisy when opening and closing, but I can live with it. Fingers crossed this baby gives us many years of good use, the last Whirlpool was such a piece of trash I am just thrilled with this new unit.
