Compared to the malfunctioning LG I just replaced this with, it's EXTREMELY loud. The LG was basically silent when turning the agitator, but the GE sounds a bit like a fog horn.
I measured it with a decibel app on my phone. It peaks at 84 decibels standing 2 feet away (40 db is the ambient level, for comparison). This puts at almost the level of a food blender, which is not something you'd want to Read More

I picked this GE because it was the only one with reviews that didn't complain about load balance issues, which is why I replaced my LG (UE error several times every wash cycle). Unfortunately, the noise level on this GE is enough that I'll likely return it and continue my hunt for a quality washing machine. Read Less

I really do not know why so many reviewers say it is loud. I find the noise level to be exactly what I would expect from a washing machine. It is not magical. You will not find reviews that say, "I have to keep checking to make sure it is working! It is so quiet that I think it has turned off!" A washing machine takes a basket full of wet clothes and sloshes them around, spins fast enough to remove gallons of water, and pumps the waste water uphill to the drain in the wall. These actions would not be silent even if you did them manually, without motors and mechanical parts. So... unless you are washing clothes in the vacuum of space, you will hear some noise. But no, this washing machine is not any louder than others. My laundry room is right off my kitchen, and I leave the door open while the washer is running, even during meal times, or when listening to podcasts. I couldn't do that with my last one because it wasn't balanced well and it squeaked and jiggled and banged around. My guess is that if someone is complaining about the noise of this washer, theirs is probably not balanced correctly. This is fairly easy to fix. The installer showed us how to use the basket as a level. Just adjust the feet so that the rim of the basket is evenly visible all around, under the lip of the opening, when you look down into the washer. Read Less

The noise level is medium. Not as loud as our old whirlpool but not as quiet either. When it is washing, you hear the intermittent grinding like sound of the basket.

Hi Mac-this is Sue from GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest! The HydroWaveTM with infusor is designed to operate quieter than a typical washer. Each time the lid is closed, the HydroWaveTM wash system senses the washer load and engages a new smart drive system that produces less noise, reduces wear on clothing and maintains great cleaning performance. I clean the soap drawer regularly and use the clean cycle for the tub at least every month. Keeping the machine clean will extend its working life. Accumulated gunk will affect the dispensing of laundry products.

You certainly don't need to wash the soap tray as there no signs of any soap residue. No mold or smell issues inside the drum either. I leave the lid open for an hour or two after the last wash then I close it until the next time I use it, which for me is usually 4 or 5 days later. It's just an extra precaution because I had a front loading LG and I hated it for the same exact reasons you mention. Top loading machines do not seem to have the same mold smell issues that front loaders have because there is no rubber gasket to completely seal the drum. Top loaders seem to dry out even with the lid closed. I've run only 1 tub clean cycle in the 3 months i've had it and that was to just make sure the feature works, not because it needed it. Read Less

I tried a huge fluffy king sized comforter in mine. In my opinion the machine is not quite big enough for it. It was stuffed too tightly and did not move around. Great machine otherwise but I had to redo my comforter in a jumbo sized front loader commercial machine at a laundromat.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 581 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy with the purchase Replaced a 16 year old washer and wanted to stay with a top loader. I read many of the reviews complaining about the noise and some balance issues with this washer but I have not experienced any of those problems. I have to get used to the different fill and wash pattern of the HE washer but it is not loud and the spin cycle has been very smooth and relatively quiet. I also noted some reviews complaining about not getting the cloths clean but again I am very happy with how the clothes come out. My only complaint is for GE to not place the energy sticker right on the front of the washer. It was a pain getting it removed. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love my new washer The GE washer has several of the great functions as many of the upscale washers. My previous washer lasted about 7 years. When it broke the service person advised me that it was a lot less expensive to buy a new one vs fixing my old one. He suggested GE because they cost less to repair. My new GE washer works great July 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by LOUD! Then, stopped working within 3 weeks I ordered this machine after reading the reviews and realized that if it worked (which it seemed to for 85% of people), it was a great value. Our worked, however extremely loudly, for the first 3 weeks, then stopped. I put in a load of laundry and it stopped with 13 minutes remaining. Try as I might, it would not finish the cycle, no mater which cycle I put it on. I have been in contact with GE 3 times and a service provider never showed up, then a part they shipped never made it here. I am extremely disappointed with their follow-through. I have 3 children, lots of dirty laundry and advise against buying this washing machine. June 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by It made it through one cycle as quietly as a food blender, then broke. This review is written after only the test cycle went through. It was delivered 45 minutes ago, and this was the only cycle it was able to make it through before literally falling apart. 1. It's loud. LOUD. Measured it at a peak of 84 decibels on my phone from 2 feet away. Ambient level is ~41 decibels. This is as loud as a food blender. The LG I replaced it with was almost silent in comparison. The loudest it got was a low hum, this GE is uncomfortably loud. 2. When the cycle was done, I opened the lid, and a large metal piece fell and hit the floor. Attached are pictures of it below. I want to repeat again, I took delivery of this thing 45 minutes ago. It's brand new, and has gone through exactly 1 test cycle. I watched the delivery people unloaded and set up the unit. They were careful and gentle with it. This will be returned as defective, and I will not take my chances with another GE. March 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by thire ok The first day i got my washer, the guys installed it and left, i put my first load in, and at 9min left they leaked, so i called them and a week later they brought me new onece, witch work ok, i wouldent say that thires somthing special about them, they do work ok but i cant say that thy are the best. March 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works for me I have very soft water, and use Arm and Hammer Tropical Burst HE Powder. I feel that this machine gets clothes as clean as my 1989 vintage top loader, using far less water and detergent. Admittedly we are only a family of two, and most of my loads are small. I have done large loads of bedding, and I do feel it works well, since it has the "waterfall" circulation. Time will tell if it is reliable. This machine gets much more water out of the clothes, so they dry faster. I haven't noticed wrinkles, but in most of the clothes that I care about, I try to buy synthetics, partly to save energy, mostly polyester. I have had this machine 8 weeks. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Loud, but nice machine! I've had this washer a couple weeks now and am very, very pleased with the quality of wash and the huge amount of clothes it hold! What took me 3 loads for whites/light colors in my old front load I can do in one load with no problem on this machine. I do utilize the deep fill feature on every load, which adds a couple inches more (still a lot less water than with all the loads I had to do with my old front load). The low agitator does a nice job and is kind of funny in that it tends to ball up each item and no doubt that is what gives the friction to clean. I do find I have to listen for when the machine drains the water in wash and rinse cycles so I can pause it and distribute the clothes evenly for the spin. It still spins if I don't, but the machine shakes so much being a little off balance (no signal sounds at this level) I am afraid the bearings will prematurely wear down. I must say it is the loudest washer I've ever owned! And I do mean loud :-) Because the wash and features deep fill features are good I only knocked one star off. I also like that GE made a large load washer/dryer in a size that fits smaller spaces. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Washer This washer cleans thoroughly and is energy/water efficient. June 22, 2016
