Yes, there is a lid lock when the basket is spinning in the beginning while it senses the quantity of the load. It also locks when the basket spins during the spin cycle. It can be unlocked by hitting pause and waiting for the basket to stop moving.

Safety is the primary reason. The lid locks when spinning and sensing essentially when the wash tub is in spin. During wash and soak cycles the lid is unlocked. It seems that the manufacturer is trying to protect the consumer.

I picked this GE because it was the only one with reviews that didn't complain about load balance issues, which is why I replaced my LG (UE error several times every wash cycle). Unfortunately, the noise level on this GE is enough that I'll likely return it and continue my hunt for a quality washing machine. Read Less

You will not find reviews that say, "I have to keep checking to make sure it is working! It is so quiet that I think it has turned off!" A washing machine takes a basket full of wet clothes and sloshes them around, spins fast enough to remove gallons of water, and pumps the waste water uphill to the drain in the wall. These actions would not be silent even if you did them manually, without motors and mechanical parts. So... unless you are washing clothes in the vacuum of space, you will hear some noise. But no, this washing machine is not any louder than others. My laundry room is right off my kitchen, and I leave the door open while the washer is running, even during meal times, or when listening to podcasts. I couldn't do that with my last one because it wasn't balanced well and it squeaked and jiggled and banged around. My guess is that if someone is complaining about the noise of this washer, theirs is probably not balanced correctly. This is fairly easy to fix. The installer showed us how to use the basket as a level. Just adjust the feet so that the rim of the basket is evenly visible all around, under the lip of the opening, when you look down into the washer. Read Less

Out of balance in spin cycle?

This question is from 4.6 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White, ENERGY STAR
Asked by
Chicago, IL

I have done a few loads in this machine now and find that the tub is not ever in balance when the spin cycle begins and the machine shakes - in some cases very badly as the speed of spin increases. I've not heard any "alarm" so I don't know if the machine even has an out of balance alarm or if I should keep pausing it until redistributing the clothes is sufficient to stop the shake and the tub from wiggling so much when spinning. Or, do I just leave it alone - although that seems to me it would prematurely wear out bearings?

Thanks for your assistance!

Answer:
I have not experienced that problem. With the low water use I find that there is a need to distribute the load when loading. The sensing cycle will tell you if the load needs to be redistributed. Try waiting until the machine does a few test spins before walking off. Re read your manual and review the loading instructions. Or you may want to call GE to see if you might have a mechanical problem.

It can get pretty noisy during spin cycle. However the few times mine has actually become out of balance it will display the word "balance" on the control panel. It will then try to redistribute the load on its own. Mine has always been able to correct itself without any help from me.

4.6 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White, ENERGY STAR is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1345.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ignore the reviews My wife and I read almost every review before buying this washer and dryer. For us, it was a major expense, and we wanted to make sure we invested wisely. And this turns out to be fantastic!!! Despite everything we read, both the washer and dryer are extremely quiet. They do have alarms that tell you when certain cycles are complete, but it has volume controls to minimize the sound. As long as you use detergent made for a HE washing machine, you will have no issues with soap residue. At all. I highly recommend this washer and dryer combination.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ITS A DECENT WASHER Purchased this washer on 7/8/2016, delivered on 7/13/2016. I've used it about 4 times already. So good so far. Was very easy to hook up, easy to use, and has lots of features. Only thing is, certain cycles may take up to 75 mins to complete (kindly long in my opinion). And although the purpose of less water being used is to save money, I don"t see with such little water filling the tub, how your clothes be cleaned/washed properly. But thankfully, you have the "Deep Fill" option which allows you to add more water to the cycle. By doing do, there should be more than enough water to fill the machine and to give you a peace of mind that your clothes will now get a good wash. I love how well it wrings out the clothes. Leaves my clothes close to dry. Then only in the dryer for 20 mins! Should anything go wrong, i'll be back with an update review...

I was very happy with this washer....until it broke down a month or so after we bought it. A service person came out and fixed it under the warranty, but it was a pain. It was a computer malfunction. Then just 7 months after purchase, it has broken again. This time however, we had to wait 5 days for a service call, a part has to be ordered and the serviceman won't return for another week. Twelve days without a functioning washer is too long. Will be seeking a return and refund and will go with a Maytag or Whirlpool next.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from On Second one and still broken I just bought this washing machine and thank God I called within the first 48 hours because the fabric softener wasn't dispensing at all. So GE said to have it replaced because it was a malfunction. Not to mention that it's the loudest washing machine I've ever heard and the shaking is ridiculous. It was installed correctly and still shakes like crazy when spinning. So we had our new replacement brought out yesterday with the exact same results. Still won't dispense the fabric softener and is still extremely loud and shakes or (maybe vibrates so much that it shakes is a better description). So I'm going into Home Depot tomorrow to pick out a completely different washing machine. Again, glad it's within the first 48 hours. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MACHINE!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would not buiy this unit. I wish I could say a few good things about this washer. I'll start by saying Don't buy this washer. Issue #1. It is loud, I hear a bunch of clicking and loud noises that checks the type of load. Issue #2, it does not get clothes clean and some clothes come from the washer untouched by water. Issue #3, In spin cycle washer jumps and raddles like there is a party in the washer. Issue #4, The fabric softener dispenser stopped working after 3 months of use. Ok 1 good thing is that even I was past my 90 return period, Home Depot did return washer and matching gas dryer for full refund. I did purchase a Samsung front load washer with matching gas dryer from Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Experience My old washer had no bells and whistles. I was very reluctant to get a washer with a computer and I wanted to stay in my caveman like state of mind. This washer washes double the load my old one did and uses less soap and water. I wash 7-10 loads, 2-3 times a week depending on what my young children do that day. My children regularly have glue, dirt, grass and food on their clothing. With a little but of stain remover the washer is taking out stains. I read the manual after the delivery man showed me a few tips on how to get started. I am happy I will be saving money and time over the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features We have had this wash machine for a few months now. Over all wonderful. It did take some time getting used to it and understanding everything it could do but being patient paid off. From quick wash to soaking for dirty laundry for two hrs. etc., so many things that a REAL wash machine should do. My only criticism is its a little noisy but in time got used to it. Does a great job in cleaning all types of things, towels, dirty jeans, bedding etc., etc. A good investment for the dollar. Hope it last as long as our other machine. We'll see, happy so far.
Date published: 2016-07-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from adjustable water height The machine has many useful features. Also great cycles for removing stains. But the biggest feature is that you can a few gallons of water to any load and in many cycles you can have it fill the machine all the way up so that all close are completely submerged - in todays world that deserves an AAA+++ Rating Glass door is excellent (would be nice to have a light inside machine) Easy to use and great ability to have several "favorite" load settings so you don't always have to reset everything Overall a great machine that can wash like the old machines and can save water like a new machine when needed.
