Compared to the malfunctioning LG I just replaced this with, it's EXTREMELY loud. The LG was basically silent when turning the agitator, but the GE sounds a bit like a fog horn.
I measured it with a decibel app on my phone. It peaks at 84 decibels standing 2 feet away (40 db is the ambient level, for comparison). This puts at almost the level of a food blender, which is not something you'd want to Read More

I picked this GE because it was the only one with reviews that didn't complain about load balance issues, which is why I replaced my LG (UE error several times every wash cycle). Unfortunately, the noise level on this GE is enough that I'll likely return it and continue my hunt for a quality washing machine. Read Less

I really do not know why so many reviewers say it is loud. I find the noise level to be exactly what I would expect from a washing machine. It is not magical. You will not find reviews that say, "I have to keep checking to make sure it is working! It is so quiet that I think it has turned off!" A washing machine takes a basket full of wet clothes and sloshes them around, spins fast enough to remove gallons of water, and pumps the waste water uphill to the drain in the wall. These actions would not be silent even if you did them manually, without motors and mechanical parts. So... unless you are washing clothes in the vacuum of space, you will hear some noise. But no, this washing machine is not any louder than others. My laundry room is right off my kitchen, and I leave the door open while the washer is running, even during meal times, or when listening to podcasts. I couldn't do that with my last one because it wasn't balanced well and it squeaked and jiggled and banged around. My guess is that if someone is complaining about the noise of this washer, theirs is probably not balanced correctly. This is fairly easy to fix. The installer showed us how to use the basket as a level. Just adjust the feet so that the rim of the basket is evenly visible all around, under the lip of the opening, when you look down into the washer. Read Less

The noise level is medium. Not as loud as our old whirlpool but not as quiet either. When it is washing, you hear the intermittent grinding like sound of the basket.

Hi Mac-this is Sue from GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest! The HydroWaveTM with infusor is designed to operate quieter than a typical washer. Each time the lid is closed, the HydroWaveTM wash system senses the washer load and engages a new smart drive system that produces less noise, reduces wear on clothing and maintains great cleaning performance. I tried a huge fluffy king sized comforter in mine. In my opinion the machine is not quite big enough for it. It was stuffed too tightly and did not move around. Great machine otherwise but I had to redo my comforter in a jumbo sized front loader commercial machine at a laundromat.

Hello Ctmazda - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. Yes, you can wash a king size comforter in this washer as long as your comforter fits below the balance ring of the washer tub and is not stuffed into the tub too tightly. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Answer:
Yes. You can press the "deep fill" button to add a few gallons at a time (you can press it multiple times until you are satisfied with the water level), or you can press and hold the button for 3 seconds, and it will fill the tub, just like in an old style top loader. You also have the option of using extra water for the rinses.

Yes you can over-ride it, but I don't feel the need to because the water level is sufficient. I am not of the belief that the clothes must be completely submerged to get them clean. The washer does a magnificent job of making the right water level decisions.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 386 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by It made it through one cycle as quietly as a food blender, then broke. This review is written after only the test cycle went through. It was delivered 45 minutes ago, and this was the only cycle it was able to make it through before literally falling apart. 1. It's loud. LOUD. Measured it at a peak of 84 decibels on my phone from 2 feet away. Ambient level is ~41 decibels. This is as loud as a food blender. The LG I replaced it with was almost silent in comparison. The loudest it got was a low hum, this GE is uncomfortably loud. 2. When the cycle was done, I opened the lid, and a large metal piece fell and hit the floor. Attached are pictures of it below. I want to repeat again, I took delivery of this thing 45 minutes ago. It's brand new, and has gone through exactly 1 test cycle. I watched the delivery people unloaded and set up the unit. They were careful and gentle with it. This will be returned as defective, and I will not take my chances with another GE. March 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by thire ok The first day i got my washer, the guys installed it and left, i put my first load in, and at 9min left they leaked, so i called them and a week later they brought me new onece, witch work ok, i wouldent say that thires somthing special about them, they do work ok but i cant say that thy are the best. March 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This washer is a wild bronco, it tries to buck all over my basement! This washer is extremely picky about what can be washed and how. My machine gets unbalanced load all the time and tries to run all over my basement. The washer does not allow you to mix items, for example if you try to wash 2 days worth of clothes and a bath towel everything will come out sopping wet. The machine has a huge tank, but forget about filling it, because if you do your clothes or sheets will come out smelly and dirty and sopping wet, so instead of saving energy and water I am wasting it by running many tiny loads. I wish I could return it, but I can't imagine returning a washer. April 25, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by standard setting = no star, extra water+rinse setting = 5 stars This is my first High Efficiency Washer. In order to SELL this washer as high Efficiency, GE set the standard washing cycle useless. Standard washing cycle doesn't wash or rinse your clothes AT ALL. It just damps the clothes and shakes them. There is not enough water for rinsing either. It just spays water a little bit, and rinsing is done!! I set "extra water" for washing and "extra water" for rinsing. It adds extra 12~ minutes and water, but it does great job. May 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very satisfied with purchase I have had the washer for about three weeks and have done approximately 30 loads of laundry (clothes, towels, blankets & bedding). I have been very pleased with the product. My previous high efficiency washer would not fully wet the clothes. Often we would have to set it for an extra rinse cycle to get them clean. This new washer has been great. It does a great job washing the clothes/load and it takes way less time then my last washer. I love the feature that shows the minutes for the length of time that the load will take depending on the cycle you choose. The settings are simple and self-explanatory. The washer is not especially quiet but compared to my last machine, it's way better. Overall, for the price, quality, and performance, I'm very happy. I ordered the washer from Homedepot.com on a Wednesday and it was delivered three days later at MY EARLIEST convenience. I couldn't be happier with my overall experience and my purchase. January 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this washing machine Does everything I want with no hassle. Controls are simple and I can easily control how much time, water, etc. that I need for any size load. Washed blankets and comforters with ease. May 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Motor Broke after 1 load I purchased this washer and it broke after 1 load of laundry. GE sent repair man which took a week. He showed up aND said he needs to order a motor and that takes 5-7 days, then he would schedule us for a week after that. That's 3 weeks with no machine. I'm athome depot now tosee what they can do. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great So far so good! Everybody's reviews helped me to choose a washer. So I thought Id give back. Note the deep fill option and my cycle. Also I noticed if I keep it on bulky items the water will turn on when the lid is open and I can add clothes. The drum is huge so can hold a lot. Love thus far!!! May 10, 2016
