Customer Questions & Answers

lid lock?

Why does the lid lock? Thanks.
Asked by: MrK
Hi MrK- This is Sue at GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest in our Top-Load Washers! Many new top-load washers have a lid lock that engages when the washer is either load-sensing before and during fill, or when it is spinning above 50 RPM. Pausing the washer during the spin cycle does unlock the lid once the basket has coasted to a stop, of course for safety reasons. Thanks for checking with us!

What is the noise level?

Have a recent Whirlpool washer that does a good job, but noise level is really intrusive.
Asked by: Mac
Compared to the malfunctioning LG I just replaced this with, it's EXTREMELY loud. The LG was basically silent when turning the agitator, but the GE sounds a bit like a fog horn. I measured it with a decibel app on my phone. It peaks at 84 decibels standing 2 feet away (40 db is the ambient level, for comparison). This puts at almost the level of a food blender, which is not something you'd want to hear for 30+ minutes straight. I picked this GE because it was the only one with reviews that didn't complain about load balance issues, which is why I replaced my LG (UE error several times every wash cycle). Unfortunately, the noise level on this GE is enough that I'll likely return it and continue my hunt for a quality washing machine.

When the washer is not in use between loads, should you leave the lid open?
Asked by: PJ
I do this out of habit. I've always left my lid open overnight to prevent any possibility of mold/smell.

I like the energy efficiency and large capacity. ComEd did provide at $50 rebate for having installed a more efficient washer. Unfortunately, I've experienced a significant issue: the washer has vibrated so much when in cycle that it's come out from the wall 18-24 inches. It happens only on some loads and load size has varied. In one instance it came out so far that it was significantly stretching the water hoses. We haven't found a fix on line, and the GE site to provide feedback and ask questions disappointed us. I would not recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from adjustable water height The machine has many useful features. Also great cycles for removing stains. But the biggest feature is that you can a few gallons of water to any load and in many cycles you can have it fill the machine all the way up so that all close are completely submerged - in todays world that deserves an AAA+++ Rating Glass door is excellent (would be nice to have a light inside machine) Easy to use and great ability to have several "favorite" load settings so you don't always have to reset everything Overall a great machine that can wash like the old machines and can save water like a new machine when needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its so high tech feeling We had a 3 year old plain jane washer, it ened up flooding our house from the cheap drian hose. We decided this time we werent going to shop for price but for the washer that we really want. This one fit our wants and needs quite well. The features if it are awesome, it has so many wash cycles, the lights when changing the knobs is neat and it makes sounds when turning it too. I like how you can control nearly every part of the wash too. Like how soiled the cloths are, how deep you want the water and even the speed of the basket at the end. The cloths get pretty dry because it spins so fast, it looks like its going to take off to space because of the speed of the spin cycle. It does vibrate a bit because of the speed, i could see an issue if it were inbalanced, but im sure there are sensors to catch that. Only thing about thai machine is its LOUD. I mean loud. Our old cheap machine wasnt as bad as this thing. I can take it though, out of everything, if i had to choose a con, id choose how loud it was. It washes good, its HE, good on entergy, and looks to be built well.

Home Depot installed it through the GE team. The bottom line is that we could not be happier. We replaced a 15 year old Kenmore. We researched the purchase alternatives thoroughly both in-store and online. Our criteria was getting the most value for the money, and not "over featuring" ie over complicating and paying for features that we would only marginally use. We also wanted reliability and personal recommendations. We have a relatively small family so having the mid size was going to be the right choice. Also, we wanted the eco-friendly models on water usage etc. Though it was difficult to wade through all of the online research this model was most consistently rated highly in the professional reviews. We were very concerned about the comments in the reviews about it being too noisy and unbalanced. We have been using it for 2 1/2 months. Our experience has been nothing but exceptional from installation through our day to day. The unit has just the right number of features. It accommodates every type of fabric and load size. Its sensing mechanisms take a little getting use to but they work great. Our clothes are generally cleaner with less wear and tear from washing. It is easy to use. Both my wife and I were able to operate "out of the box" with minimum consultation with the product manuals. And the perceived issue regarding "too much noise" was not our experience. We close the utility door and it is fine - not the least disruptive. Everything else in our house generates more noise than this washer and dryer. The GE appliance team did a perfect job of setting it up. We had a completely turn key experience. They were on time (which is rarely the case with big box purchases). And it did not take long. They balanced everything for us as advertised. Your experience might be different obviously. But ours was nothing but good. We felt that we made the right decision for the right reasons. And for our purposes, this has been a fantastic choice.

This is the first time I've ever bought a washer and dryer instead of inheriting ones that came with a house. They were on sale at HD before Thanksgiving, then off sale, then on sale again after Christmas, when I broke down and bought them using a HD card and interest-free payments over time so I could afford them. We had the washer and dryer delivered the last weekend of January, but weren't able to hook them up in our new addition until last weekend (beginning of April). So, I've had two weekends of using them and on multiple loads of different kinds of items in the washer, I've had to re-organize a wet load because the washer won't balance itself. (These loads have included a "small" load of towel set consisting of 2 each washcloths, hand towels, and bath sheets plus a couple of kitchen towels; a large load of bulky dog towels, blankets, and bed covers; and a load of combined queen sheets and same towels.) Without balancing itself, the washer doesn't spin sufficiently to drain and wring out the clothes completely. On several loads, I've had to "drain and spin" an extra time -- sometimes twice. I've even had to re-start a cycle because the washer never went through its cleaning cycle to begin with. (I do try to load evenly.) The washer has also balled up loads of clothes into tangled ropes (almost like my old dryer used to do when there were fitted sheets in the load), but that's pretty minor and something I can live with. Note to short people -- the bottom of this huge washer is a long way down! Tip-toes and/or a stool will help! OTOH, I love the accompanying dryer (GTD65EBSJWS). It's almost too strong -- I've had to cut drying times in half because it works so efficiently. :-) I love the digital displays and automatic cycles and ability to personalize each cycle on both the washer and dryer. I just wish I could love the washer itself more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great washer You can't go wrong buying this washer. It uses way less water to wash and most of the wash times are probably longer for that reason. It has many features, countdown timer, settings for special stains,(blood, grass etc.)auto setting for various clothing types (whites, towels, perm press, colors, delicates, etc) and you can enter your own settings if you like. Noise level is normal. You do have to take more care placing the clothes evenly in the basket so it does not walk during the spin cycle. The high speed spin cuts drying time almost in half.

First time several parts were replaced along with the motor, less than 2 months later it seized AGAIN. 2. Extended protection plan is a JOKE; if anything happens within the first year, they just refer you to mfr warranty. Why pay for a "protection plan" for 36 months from purchase date if for the first 12 months the only coverage is mfr warranty (which is included in purchase price)? 3. Mfr allows you to schedule a service call fairly easy, but you gotta wait (5 days this time), plus the time for delivery of any parts. 4. Overall, a waste of money and eventually creating more garbage due to expected premature replacement.

It took a month for GE to finally repair it. I spoke with many GE associates about my poor experience, including the Consumer Relations Manager, who works directly for the President of GE. I asked for a 3 year warranty to ensure I would have a dependable washer for a few years. I was told GE can only provide a warranty on their washers for two years. So, I'm very disappointed. I think it's sad that a company of GE's size, longevity, and resources cannot guarantee that their appliances will work for at least three years. I reported my experience to the Better Business Bureau. Also, the machine is very loud and rocks violently.
