Compared to the malfunctioning LG I just replaced this with, it's EXTREMELY loud. The LG was basically silent when turning the agitator, but the GE sounds a bit like a fog horn.

I picked this GE because it was the only one with reviews that didn't complain about load balance issues, which is why I replaced my LG (UE error several times every wash cycle). Unfortunately, the noise level on this GE is enough that I'll likely return it and continue my hunt for a quality washing machine. Read Less

I really do not know why so many reviewers say it is loud. I find the noise level to be exactly what I would expect from a washing machine. It is not magical. You will not find reviews that say, "I have to keep checking to make sure it is working! It is so quiet that I think it has turned off!" A washing machine takes a basket full of wet clothes and sloshes them around, spins fast enough to remove gallons of water, and pumps the waste water uphill to the drain in the wall. These actions would not be silent even if you did them manually, without motors and mechanical parts. So... unless you are washing clothes in the vacuum of space, you will hear some noise. But no, this washing machine is not any louder than others. My laundry room is right off my kitchen, and I leave the door open while the washer is running, even during meal times, or when listening to podcasts. I couldn't do that with my last one because it wasn't balanced well and it squeaked and jiggled and banged around. My guess is that if someone is complaining about the noise of this washer, theirs is probably not balanced correctly. This is fairly easy to fix. The installer showed us how to use the basket as a level. Just adjust the feet so that the rim of the basket is evenly visible all around, under the lip of the opening, when you look down into the washer. Read Less

The noise level is medium. Not as loud as our old whirlpool but not as quiet either. When it is washing, you hear the intermittent grinding like sound of the basket.

Hi Mac-this is Sue from GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest! The HydroWaveTM with infusor is designed to operate quieter than a typical washer. Each time the lid is closed, the HydroWaveTM wash system senses the washer load and engages a new smart drive system that produces less noise, reduces wear on clothing and maintains great cleaning performance. Out of balance in spin cycle?

This question is from 4.6 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White, ENERGY STAR
Asked by
Chicago, IL

July 17, 2016
I have done a few loads in this machine now and find that the tub is not ever in balance when the spin cycle begins and the machine shakes - in some cases very badly as the speed of spin increases. I've not heard any "alarm" so I don't know if the machine even has an out of balance alarm or if I should keep pausing it until redistributing the clothes is sufficient to stop the shake and the tub from wiggling so much when spinning. Or, do I just leave it alone - although that seems to me it would prematurely wear out bearings?

Thanks for your assistance!

Answer:
I have not experienced that problem. With the low water use I find that there is a need to distribute the load when loading. The sensing cycle will tell you if the load needs to be redistributed. Try waiting until the machine does a few test spins before walking off. Re read your manual and review the loading instructions. Or you may want to call GE to see if you might have a mechanical problem.

It can get pretty noisy during spin cycle. However the few times mine has actually become out of balance it will display the word "balance" on the control panel. It will then try to redistribute the load on its own. Mine has always been able to correct itself without any help from me.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ITS A DECENT WASHER Purchased this washer on 7/8/2016, delivered on 7/13/2016. I've used it about 4 times already. So good so far. Was very easy to hook up, easy to use, and has lots of features. Only thing is, certain cycles may take up to 75 mins to complete (kindly long in my opinion). And although the purpose of less water being used is to save money, I don"t see with such little water filling the tub, how your clothes be cleaned/washed properly. But thankfully, you have the "Deep Fill" option which allows you to add more water to the cycle. By doing do, there should be more than enough water to fill the machine and to give you a peace of mind that your clothes will now get a good wash. I love how well it wrings out the clothes. Leaves my clothes close to dry. Then only in the dryer for 20 mins! Should anything go wrong, i'll be back with an update review... August 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this washer Finally got rid of the front loader that leaked, left clothes dirty, didn't rinse out the soap and often left clothes dry and went back to a top loader. This one is awesome - holds 2x as many clothes and gets them all WET, CLEAN, and RINSED PROPERLY. It's amazing the difference it makes - skin not so itchy, clothes smell clean - just clean - not sudsy. The amount of lint the dryer is NOW catching after a wash with this unit is incredible - and with old clothes and towels - because it wasn't being agitated off with the top loader. Had to have a front loader, and hated it after a month - tired of washing it with vinegar - trying to gauge how many clothes it would fit and actually get them semi-clean, so finally went back to a top and this one is great. Only con - it's so big and fits so many items the dryer can't handle all of them and they can come out wrinkled. If you're short - it might also be hard to reach into the bottom of the drum - but hey - get a step ladder - CLEAN CLOTHES AGAIN!!! August 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Experience My old washer had no bells and whistles. I was very reluctant to get a washer with a computer and I wanted to stay in my caveman like state of mind. This washer washes double the load my old one did and uses less soap and water. I wash 7-10 loads, 2-3 times a week depending on what my young children do that day. My children regularly have glue, dirt, grass and food on their clothing. With a little but of stain remover the washer is taking out stains. I read the manual after the delivery man showed me a few tips on how to get started. I am happy I will be saving money and time over the long run. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far, so good It works, and the clothes get clean. What more do you want.. August 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best washing machine I have ever owned and I have owned many in my almost 50 years of marriage! The drum is huge on this machine and I am able to even thoroughly wash my king size bed spread. The cycles are also shorter than my last "he" machine and I get better results in terms of clean!! August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing! This washer is amazing! It gets stains out with no problem, is quiet, and is so efficient. The options it has regards to different settings for different stains works so well and actually gets out what it says it will. The drum is huge so it can hold large loads of laundry with no issues at all. Great purchase! August 14, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by It made it through one cycle as quietly as a food blender, then broke. This review is written after only the test cycle went through. It was delivered 45 minutes ago, and this was the only cycle it was able to make it through before literally falling apart. 1. It's loud. LOUD. Measured it at a peak of 84 decibels on my phone from 2 feet away. Ambient level is ~41 decibels. This is as loud as a food blender. The LG I replaced it with was almost silent in comparison. The loudest it got was a low hum, this GE is uncomfortably loud. 2. When the cycle was done, I opened the lid, and a large metal piece fell and hit the floor. Attached are pictures of it below. I want to repeat again, I took delivery of this thing 45 minutes ago. It's brand new, and has gone through exactly 1 test cycle. I watched the delivery people unloaded and set up the unit. They were careful and gentle with it. This will be returned as defective, and I will not take my chances with another GE. March 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ignore the reviews My wife and I read almost every review before buying this washer and dryer. For us, it was a major expense, and we wanted to make sure we invested wisely. And this turns out to be fantastic!!! Despite everything we read, both the washer and dryer are extremely quiet. They do have alarms that tell you when certain cycles are complete, but it has volume controls to minimize the sound. As long as you use detergent made for a HE washing machine, you will have no issues with soap residue. At all. I highly recommend this washer and dryer combination. July 26, 2016
