Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by BK Softens water nicely, defective part needed immediate replacement.
The water softener was relatively easy to install, however; I was replacing an older GE softener so all the plumbing was already in place. When I was ready to plug it in and start it up, I got no power. I checked the wiring and all was good. Multi-meter probing showed no voltage. The power transformer that came with the unit looked and felt like a cell phone charger. This seemed odd to me since the power adapter from the unit I was replacing was a lot larger and heavier (close to 1lb). The power ratings are different from one transformer to the other. Not sure what to think about this...
I called GE support and they asked me if I had plugged it into a power strip (which I did, but also tried bypassing the power strip to no avail). Plugging your water softener into a power strip will break the water softener's power transformer according to the GE support rep. Anyway, I was sent a new one and the replacement was a large and beefy as the old one. This worked perfectly. No issues since.
The water softener is in my crawlspace so I don't hear any noise from it (not even sure how much noise it produces).
I am on a community well and I tested my water hardness from some strips I bought from "the world's largest marketplace". These strips did not measure the lead levels, so I just assumed a little and added it to my water hardness level accordingly. I then set the water softener to that number. No more hardness. It seems to be working as it should. Had it installed for almost 8 weeks now.
The indicator states that I have 0 days of salt left, but it is mistaken. Been saying that for a week or two now. Not sure how useful the salt-monitoring is, but I like how it tells you the average gallons/day used is. That is the extent of the display's usefulness IMO. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder how accurate the gallons/day reading is if the other readings are not all that accurate?
My children's sensitive-skin issues have gone down with the softer water. This makes everyone a little happier.
We use a reverse osmosis water filtration system for drinking and do not notice any salty taste. I have not tried to drink from the faucet yet, but the dog doesn't seem to mind. I hope this review helps someone out.

The online purchase process was easy. Delivery miss a day due to my address being new.
Installation was super easy.
And most important...compare to its cousin (the Kenmore brand) the footprint/rectangular shape of the GE is much slim. I recommend this unit if you have reduced space to install it.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by truckerich Want a softener that works well?
Soft, soft, soft. I love it and wife loves and son loves it. I set my hardness 25. NICE. The higher the hardness is set it regenerates more often. Making water so soft. Pour oil all over your body and imagen how smooth that feels and Slick too. WELL that is what my softener is doing. Not with oil LOL but with the salt. Not hard to install. I went with the main IN and then out to HOUSE. That way everything is soft. The digital monitor will show average gallons use per day. I use on average 150 gallons per day. That's 3 of us and using washer, refrig, sinks, etc. Love it, truckerich

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Andy I don't recommend - leaks water/salt from bottom
I bought this GE water softener at Home Depot and had it installed 4 days ago. After 15 minutes of running for the first time, water and salt started leaking out from the back right corner. It has spread and now salt is all around the base. It started about half an inch out from all sides and now it's a couple inches out. GE sent a contractor out and he came by today. He said he has to replace the entire storage tank. He said he has had 4 of these lately and he's not sure why, this same model GE water softener. The storage tank seems extremely delicate, like some sort of cheap plastic material. Now we have to wait a couple weeks and I have to mop up the salt around the base every few days. He essentially said that the entire thing has to be taken apart in order to put in the new casing tank. They reuse all the electronics, float, etc, and GE sends out a new shell.

We purchased the water softener on April 22 and for over six weeks we tried to make it work, we wanted it to work because it no small item to return. We tried every thing, the blending knob was not turned all the way off when installed so do that and maybe in a couple of days we will have soft water. Turn the hardness level up and maybe in couple of days we will have soft water and on and on it went until we were fed up and returned to Home Depot on the 10th of June. We purchased another softener the same day and install it is now Monday June13th and we have soft water from the new purchase. We spent a lot of time on this disaster trying to make it work to no avail. A total waste of time and money. However Home Depot did return our money. I should mention that I called to GE for help and that to was a total wast of my time. They would for a fee of course come out and check it but if they had to do anything to it that would also cost a fee. We installed the new softener ourselves as well and it works great so it was definitely

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by jim reasonable price
water softener was easy to plumb as I already had an old unit installed that failed.
The only dislike is the size of the foot print is a little larger than I expected.
But so far the unit is working like it should so I am a happy camper now with soft water

This softener is easy to install and just as easy to set up. I love the days til empty feature and the fact that after a month or 2 this baby adjusts to your water usage automatically. GE put great engineering into this system. I have well water with high iron content and this replaced an iron filter and the old softener. Could not be happier.
