Questions & Answers

my water taste very salty. how do i correct that?

Asked by: randy
Can salt enter my drinking water? No. Salt's sole purpose in your water softener is to regenerate the resin beads that actually take the hardness out of your water. This exchange does not make your water taste salty or significantly increase your sodium intake.

Is this supposed to wobble when on flat ground?

When I placed this on a flat surface it wobbles, nothing is on the bottom of it that isn't part of the system.
Asked by: Jd
Hi Jd- Thanks for your purchase! The unit may be "wobbly" when first unboxed. This is normal. The unit will "flatten out" when salt is added and become stable. Thanks for reaching out to us. Enjoy! SUE@GEA

Regeneration: I’m just looking for some reassurance. We (2 adults only) had this softener installed on August 18. We average about 60 gallons usage per day according to the unit's readout. Hardness is set at 35 based on our water company's report that hardness is 20 gpg. The installer upped it to 35 for clear water iron content based on his experience. The brine tank was filled to the 5 level. The first day I ran the hot water tap for about 20 minutes (2 gpm) to recycle the water in the water heater (I know, very inefficient). The unit regenerated about 6 days later when the unit show 20% capacity remaining in the resin tank. Now it regenerates about every 4 days when the unit shows between 30-35% capacity remaining in the resin tank. The brine tank is now at the 3.5 level and I did change the salt level to correspond with that level. Should I change the salt level in the unit's programming as salt in the brine tank is depleted? Does it seem like it’s functioning normally?

Thanks everyone for your input. I lowered the water hardness from 35 to 30 and of course cycles less frequently. I'm leaving it alone now.

How much salt does this machine use a year? I know it will depend on how much water one uses and the hardness of water in your area but I'm looking for a few data points to get a sense of whether users are buying $100, $500, $1000, etc. of salt a year. I live by myself in Southern California.
Asked by: bas
Hello bas. This is RICHARDatGEA. We are glad to help. You are correct that there are many variables to consider. If you consider the Rated Capacity* (Grains@ Salt Dose) of 11,700 grains @ 2.3 lbs, it is not using a great amount of salt. You may use more depending on the water hardness, but it should not be a huge amount. Thanks for the question.

I'm on well water and just bought the house last year. I knew the water was hard, but until I got some test strips didn't realize how hard. I was about 15gpg. The install was super smooth, as I got the 1" FIP to 3/4" Sharkbite hose. It took me longer to find my cutter to cut the PVC to install than to actual hook up and setup. I do have to knock off 1 star because the injection molded plastic. At the bottom it did not sit flat, so I had to make a stand from studs to support the unit from the front and back. It wobbled without any support.

This was a simple unit to install and has worked without issue from day 1. It provides good, soft water that makes soap suds easy and clothes are much softer and brighter. I bought the 40,000 grain because I had a 15% off coupon on on-line purchases from Home Depot. The only issue I have is that with our rate of consumption, that means that we will only need to refill it with salt once every year!

The installer did set the hardness level to 35 even though our water company reported hardness at 20 grains per gallon. We adjusted the level downward to 30 which is to account for clear water iron. A bypass valve comes with the unit so that you can water the lawn without using soft water. On the other hand you can use soft-water through a power sprayer when washing the car resulting in no water spots. There are only two adults in our household and this unit is more than adequate for our needs.

I assembled softeners and had a retail store, sales people contractors lic. installers and service dept. I was going to buy a Fleck unit but decided to give Home Depot a shot. I am quite pleased.

I've wanted a water softener system for years, especially after seeing what it did for my brother's water problems just up the road from me. His system has the separate resin tank and salt reservoir, requires annual servicing by a technician (it has a mechanical dial system), and cycles no matter how much water is used. It cost him about $1,500, plus the cost of the annual service. He also has to keep an eye on the salt levels. I was installing a new water heater and moving his water softener system recently when I decided to do more research. I noticed this GE unit at The Home Depot. It was one combined unit, metered the water usage to only cycle when necessary, included a built-in self-clearing silt filter (I'm on a well), and had a great warranty (1 year everything/3 year electronics/10 year resin tank). It even has alarms that let you know when the salt is getting low (even though the countdown timer shows it will be a long time before I need to add any). I had my water tested at a local testing lab before installation, then again after installing the unit (about $90). This gave me the proper settings, and confirmed the unit was in fact removing everything from the water (no sales person bias). I also called the GE customer service line to confirm what setting should be used for my water and I received very fast and friendly service. I decided to use the potassium chloride for many reasons, and GE customer service recommended dialing up the settings a bit to compensate, although I'm not sure it was necessary at that point (I had already set the unit a little higher and confirmed the results with the water test). It has been over three months now and all of our fixtures are staying nice and clean (minor rust staining gone), and the water tastes much better without water filters. I only wish I could have done this 16 years ago when we built our home. My wife and I see this as the best home improvement project we've done in years!

I've had this installed for a bit over a week now and everything has been great so far. It brought our hardness from ~30 gpg down to ~0 gpg from our testing with an off-the-shelf kit. The instructions to install were clear. I've never installed anything like this before and was able to figure it out without much of a problem. The few issues/point of confusion that I did have were cleared up easily with online resources. I had to make one call to their support line for a couple of questions and they took my call fast and knew what I was talking about right away to help. The only issue that I have with it is that routing the drain hoses has been a challenge. They don't include quite as much as I needed with it and it won't stop trying to coil in on itself.

Set-up was super easy and the install was not that bad. The unit is plastic which was concerning at first, however it seems to be pretty solid and should last a few years. The unit was slightly wobbly at first when it was empty which I did not like. However, it is molded plastic so that does happen. Once the unit is filled with Salt and water it all takes form so it stands solid now. I connected to 3/4" PEX and installed three ball valves so I could isolate the unit from my plumbing directly if I ever have the need. I would recommend doing this as well for the added $10 or so per ball valve. It may save you some headache in the future. If I would do it again I would have purchased 10ft straight sections of PEX rather than a roll. The PEX at this size is not forgiving and was giving me some issues with trying to make and maintain a straight section of PEX. All and all I'm happy with the product as it does what is advertised.

I contacted GE customer support unit and was given a name of a service technician and was never called back. Called customer support again for other technicians and I have never received a call back from the 2 technicians customer support gave me, therefore there is no warranty on this product if no one will repair the water softener. DO NOT BUY, awful customer service and no warranty.
