Is it ok to transport the hot water lying on its side after I pick it up at the store? The distance is about 65 miles.

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, they can be transported on their side. The box will indicate which side should be faced down when transporting the unit. Look at the box for this before you purchase it.

How much is the installation cost for this water heater?

Asked by: Melaine
I bought this to measure up with the replacement. This was about an inch taller so I was pretty much able to use the connections that were on the old heater. I did the install myself and what little I had to buy was under $20. Hope this helps

Customer Reviews

40 gal. Short 6 Year 36,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater-DISCONTINUED is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Price for a 40 Gal. Woke up monday morning to find our old tank had died on us, checked prices online, ran to home depot, snagged the tank and some parts/fittings just in case. Got the old tank out and the new in and hooked up in about 4 hours, I took my time and double checked everything. Works just like it should; regenerates the heat very well, very quiet operation, short profile makes for perfect fit (and easier to move around while installing!) Only con I have is that online H.D. stated $309 but in store was actually $366, not the end of the world, just keep that in mind (the shipping would prob level out the cost) still for $366 its a GREAT unit!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed immediately, in-home warranty is terrible The water heater leaked gas from the gas valve right after installation. I called GE warranty and they said they would ship overnight the replacement valve. They did. They also said that a local contractor would call me within 1 business day to replace it. They contractor never called. I called GE to get the contractor's number to call him myself, but the contractor never returned or answered any calls. I had to install the valve myself or else, wait forever without hot water until GE finds someone willing to do it, if they could. What happens here is that GE pays peanuts to these contractors, so nobody wants to perform the job. You might be without water for a long time if this water heater happens to fail after it is installed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective thermocoupler After two years, the thermocoupler went out. Had to wait for delivery of part, so we went without hot water till part arrived. Very inconvenient. Paid plumber to reinstall thermocoupler. 10 months later thermocoupler went out again. Same story except this time it went out on Jan 1, coldest day of the year and a day that no one is working. By Friday the part arrived. Our plumber reinstalled. The next evening, the pilot went out and will not start again. Looks like we are going to have to get a brand new water heater and guess what? It's not going to be a G.E. Gas Ultra Low NOx. Hope you learn from our mistakes and not buy this lemon. Signed. Showerless in Tarzana.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from pilot already a problem and shuts off after 6 months usage used for 2 summers only and already having a problem with pilot light which continues to go out. Do not buy. A waste of money as the fix will cost more than this heater. Home depot special purchases do not last and are defective. Second time and ge refrigerator I had problems also with fans replaced for $400 and this right after warranty (extended even) ran out by 1 month. Just really something wrong with GE and HOMEDEPOT products. Will not buy here again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GE vs the other brand I had to purchase a new water heater due to continual problems with my old one. The installation of this item was very easy. I have an older home with a small water heater closet and thie short profile of this item works great. After 24 hours with this new product it has done it's job perfectly. It's great to set a water heater on a temperature and it actually gets to that temperature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Problem This was my first hot water heater installation and had no trouble at all. I t fired right up. The old one died on Memerial Day Weekend and thankfully Home Depot was open and had everything I needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy so far I've had it for about three weeks and everything is running smoothly. I have no complaints. Just make sure you get the appropriate hot/cold water lines at Home Depot. If replacing an old unit, conduct an inspection of existing lines since its a good time to make necessary replacements.
