40 gal. Tall 9 Year 38,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Installation I bought this water heater to replace my old one. I looked at many places and this was the best deal for the money I could find. The warrantee made the difference for me. The installation was so easy, it took about an hour. I used the electric water heater stainless flex lines i(even though it is a gas heater) instead of the sweated copper I had. Home Depot had a huge selection and they sure made the installation easy and it looks good too. I have it set on the next to the lowest setting and the temperature is perfect. I am very happy with this heater and all the help that the Home depot people gave me. I'll buy my next appliance there for sure.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Will Never Buy Another GE Product EVER! Purchased this product Tuesday and it's now Friday and still do not have hot water and according to GE they cannot do anything about it until Tuesday next week!!! The pilot light wouldn't stay lit so the only thing we could do was call GE customer service (what a joke). The said it was the thermal coupler and would send one out. They were also to send a technician to install. Their local tech couldn't come for a week. We paid to have the Gas Co. come out and install but that didn't fix the problem and their tech said it was the gas control valve (only part left). After hours of trying to get on their cs line again, we got someone on 2:00 and they said it was too late to send one out and they couldn't get it out until Monday. We will be a week without hot water because Home Depot doesn't carry the parts to repair the hot water heaters they sell and no one else in the area wants to touch a GE product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement Water Heater This water heater was purchased as a replacement after coming home to find a broken heater and water in the basement. I found this on sale for $419 and had it installed by Home Depot's installers. They were great to work with and did everything including picking up the heater at the store and bringing it to my house for installation. The only word of advice I have is check with your local municipality to see if you are able to pull permits yourself. You can save money pulling the permits yourself instead of having the installers do it. I did not know this was an option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement for my old water heater. I just replaced my 15 year old water heater with this one, and it works fantastic. It is very quiet. The old one used to make a deep rumbling sound when it lit up, this one still makes a deep sound when the burner is fired up, but you have to be standing very close to hear it. The piezo ingnition system is great, no more matches. Just push the button and it starts. It does not require an electrical connection either for it to work. The design and safety features have been improved. This one seems much safer than my old one. The instrucation manual will explain how the safety features work. This one is also more efficient than my old one, since this has thicker insulation on the inside of the tank. I have no regrets about this purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Water Heater Purchased product from HD 04-13-13. Installed 04-20-13. Install was pretty easy due to the fact that my old Kenmore heater (22years and still working fine) was pretty much the same dimentions as this unit. Only reason for replacement was the age of the old heater. Buying this unit was a mistake. Filled the water, turned on the gas and followed pilot lighting directions for the first time. No issues there. Fired up the heater at the preffered setting. First the unit developed a strong burning smell in about 5 mins. I figured it was the new paint and such burning. After 20 mins, a loud pop noise and no flame. Called GE customer service. They sent me instructions to remove the burner and to inspect inside, which I did. GE customer service came to the conclusion that this was due to a faulty combustion shut off device assy (TRD) and could not ship the part or send someone over to fix this for 4 days. 4 days without hot water is not possible in spring time since the water temps are around 50F. GE customer service insisted this was due to the lack of air around the water heater. However there is nothing around the heater as it sits in a closet 10' * 5'. The old heater sat there for 22 years without an issue. Went back to HD and spoke with the store manager who was very understanding and nice to remove the TRD from a new unit on the shelf and give it to me. Came home and installed the new TRD. Started the water heater at the lowest setting possible. This time it ran for about 30 mins before the new TRD blew again. At this point I was very frustrated. There had to be something wrong with this heater. Went back to HD and the store manager was again an absolute pleasure to deal with. He offered me another new water heater (Same model#) and transportation. Cut the pipes, removed the heater and installed the 2nd water heater. It has been 4 days and it has had no issues. What I learned from this experiance was that GE customer service will not take responsibility for their product failing. Absolutely no help. There was obviously something wrong with the 1st heater. I will never buy another GE product. Management and staff and Home Depot is great. I could not have asked for better customer service!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from GE Rheem poor quality breaks after 2.5 years Seems like the manufacturer has a defective product. Like many others who own this product after 2.5 years, the went bad leading to one day having no hot water, pilot doesn't stay lit. While it's cool the warranty is longer than 2.5 years and I got the part sent to me, I didn't appreciate the cold showers and then having to spend time to install the replacement part. Look to another manufacturer, I'd avoid GE Rheem unless you like cold showers and like fixing ithe hot water heater by yourself when it goes bad. My hot water heater was purchased through Home Depot with professional installation. My hot water heater resides in the laundry room so isn't exposed to extreme temperatures.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GE/Rheem Water heater We bought and installed this water heater in 11/06. It is now leaking out of the center top. When we called GE for warranty info it only took a few minutes to get authorization for replacement. We have had not problems at all with this water heater until now. It should have lasted longer than it did but at least the warranty is being honored. We still have to pay for removing and installing the new one. But all in all, considering this is made in China I guess we are somewhat fortunate. It does run very quietly. I would probably buy this again knowing GE will in fact warranty it.
