I've looked through the specs and I don't really see why the big difference in price.

Answer:
Thanks, Lisa. The difference in spec is marginal in my opinion, so it really doesn't answer the question as to why the big price gap. Interestingly, there is a comparable whirlpool at lowes with similar specs, but not the big price gap. I'm just making sure I'm not missing something before making a decision.

Hello, This is Lisa from GE Appliances. This unit can be installed outside as long as it is protected from the elements, such as rain, freezing temperatures and direct sunlight. By protected we mean, if unit will be outdoors where the temperature will go below 32 degrees F, then an enclosure, similar to a 4 sided storage shed with roof, and a heat source to prevent the water in the softener from freezing. If installed outside where rain or direct sunlight will fall on the unit again, some sort of enclosure like a storage shed will be needed to protect the components, like the electronic control from being exposed to moisture. Exposure to moisture will damage the electronic controls.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Features we were looking for Easy installation for the DIYer. It has features we were looking for. Larger capacity at a good price. July 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good Plumbing was pretty easy even for my 1st time since I just had to slightly modify my plumbing after removing old water softener. Had a friend helping but got all my parts from local store. I needed 1 inch type M copper pipe. I was amazed that I could not find it at local stores using a web search. But when I went to the stores they had everything I needed even though they called the parts by different name. The two 1 inch NPT's were actually called Copper Adapter CXFIP. My local hardware store had everything but they were about 40% more expensive then the big box stores. Setup was simple and instructions were easy to follow. My water did turn rust color and then a whitest color before I was all done running water through softener and running the Sanitize regeneration cycle. I do like that it shows me how many days remaining till more salt needed and how much water I am using daily. This unit takes up far less space then my old unit which had a big white Salt bin next to it. My old unit lasted 22 yrs but it was all analog. Hopefully this unit lasts at least 10 yrs but I would expect at least 20. May 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hard to install, damaged, no instructions Not available in store, so had to have shipped. When I opened the box, it was clear that it had already been opened and returned. Unit had cosmetic damage from shipping and was missing instructions. needed additional work and parts to complete installation. Won't buy equipment from HomeDepot that I can't inspect again.
