can the freezer be turned off when not in use?

Asked by: Mark
As I understand it, the compressor in fridges generally fills and starts cooling the freezer part first: In traditional family fridges, a heavy-duty workhorse fan kicks cold air--to the other side, below, or above--to the separated and insulated fridge area. (The fan actually proves hazardous--it's really tough.) So, the freezer part may not be shut off or turned down--in that manner. A cool fridge area is dependent upon freezer air. (Indeed, separate control of the freezer in common "mini fridges" isn't possible at all (a common complaint)--the effect of temperature knob adjustment applies equally--throughout the common, insulated interior.) Given this model and other cheaper models with metal freezer compartments, a separate fan isn't necessary to blow cold freezer air into a separated and insulated fridge compartment. Certainly, forgoing that fan and separated insulated compartments lowers manufacturing costs. Instead, the metal freezer compartment (with a plastic door in front) obviously blocks cold air--somewhat--the metal also conducts cold to the fridge part: So, the fridge part (the rest of the interior) is warmer than the freezer part--thanks to clever design from long ago. A familiar situation: The cheap, metal freezer surface often becomes encrusted easily and heavily with ice. Condensation adheres easily and freezes mightily. Efficiency lessens--especially in the fridge area.

From front to back. Should I remove this? It looks like it was for packing.with it on the refrigerator wobbles left to right.
Asked by: Milton
Mine does too... never noticed that. I sort of doubt it's just there for packing, but it's beyond me what it does. Nevertheless, it isn't causing my refrigerator to rock. You might try extending the front legs to better balance and level the unit. Mines been in place for 6 months or so and I never even noticed it. Good luck.

Customer Reviews

5.6 cu. ft. Mini Refrigerator in Black is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 148.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I Needed We had a cutout place for the fridge, and the published dimensions were exactly as stated and the fit was great. The unit itself cools very effectively, looks good and matches the rest of the appliances. We needed to fill a hole AND the extra refrigeration will be very handy for entertaining.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It is OK The door is ridiculously clumsy. The bars holding bottles and jars are made of wire and flop all over the place. Things can fall out very easily. A whole section is devoted to soda or beer cans, neither of which I use. The other shelves on the door are either too small or too large. The freezer is much too narrow, it just barely fits the ice cube trays. It also takes around 24 hours to freeze ice cubes solid. I did not choose this model, my landlord did. It was the only one that fit the cabinet in the kitchen. There is no provision to choose and change the shelves inside the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frosty refrigerator I was looking for a refrigerator to keep beverages icy cold; about 34F degrees. I tried buying a less expensive brand but had to return it because it couldn't stay cold enough. This little refrigerator can maintain 34F easily and could be set even colder. I'm sure it's capable of freezing everything in there if I set it high enough. It has lots of space and convenient features like glass shelves, plus it looks great. It also doesn't require lots of space around it so I could build it into my man-cave bar. This is my second GE compact refrigerator. The first one is about 6 years old and my son took it to college, but it's still going strong. I'm very happy with this unit and expect it to last a long while.

Attractive refrigerator keeps beverages icy cold but the freezer compartment is worthless....... I purchased this refrigerator several months ago for my man-cave bar. My main goal was to keep beverages between 32 and 34 degrees which can be a challenge for lower cost, compact refrigerators. This refrigerator is able to do this but needs to be nearly at the coldest setting. However it is barely able to make ice in the tiny ice cube trays that came with it at that setting. I suspect it could not keep frozen food or ice cream cold enough for long term storage either. It is attractive and feels like a quality unit. It does run frequently but I wouldn't call it excessive. It is audible when running but again, not excessively loud. I was also able to install it under my bar because it has minimal requirements for open space around the unit. My installation provides about 2-3 inches on the sides and rear; 1 inch clearance on top. I would recommend this unit as long as you don't require ice or an effective freezer compartment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great! Perfect for my wet bar and looks great. Lots of room for cans and bottles, plus makes ice in short order. One of the best values out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable The kitchen space in my apartment is limited so had to choose a shorter model for storing my food and grocery. The price is decent but performance wise it didn't meet exactly what I was expecting for. Freezer doesn't freeze meat/seafood thoroughly, making constant clicking noise when the compressor starts working, the temperature was set to "coolest" but feels like the food went bad quicker than the regular fridge I had in my previous apartment. It meets certain use case as some online review stated; However won't recommend this for someone who stores food regularly for cooking.

The reason for the 3 stars is because it makes a buzzing noise every so often. I've opened the back panel and it's like the fan/mechanism ramps up and starts buzzing and then it slowly stops, I had wondered if it was rubbing against the back panel, but I can't see anything amiss. . But it is annoying when you are in a meeting. I may have to have it serviced, such a pain and minor annoyance when something is new.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fridge, but no flat plug? Fridge looks great and so far looks wonderful. It pokes out a bit from the base cabinet; if the plug was flat against the wall it would be great. Glass shelves are high quality, I am able to fit beer bottles on one shelf and cans on the shelf above. Would be an easy 5 star if the plug was flat. Much better price and reliability ratings compared to beverage centers with clear front door.
