I see some undercounter frigs show 39 degrees as lowest setting. Am looking for something that will keep beverage closer to 34. Can I expect that of this unit?

can the freezer be turned off when not in use?

Asked by: Mark
As I understand it, the compressor in fridges generally fills and starts cooling the freezer part first: In traditional family fridges, a heavy-duty workhorse fan kicks cold air--to the other side, below, or above--to the separated and insulated fridge area. (The fan actually proves hazardous--it's really tough.) So, the freezer part may not be shut off or turned down--in that manner. A cool fridge area is dependent upon freezer air. (Indeed, separate control of the freezer in common "mini fridges" isn't possible at all (a common complaint)--the effect of temperature knob adjustment applies equally--throughout the common, insulated interior.) Given this model and other cheaper models with metal freezer compartments, a separate fan isn't necessary to blow cold freezer air into a separated and insulated fridge compartment. Certainly, forgoing that fan and separated insulated compartments lowers manufacturing costs. Instead, the metal freezer compartment (with a plastic door in front) obviously blocks cold air--somewhat--the metal also conducts cold to the fridge part: So, the fridge part (the rest of the interior) is warmer than the freezer part--thanks to clever design from long ago. A familiar situation: The cheap, metal freezer surface often becomes encrusted easily and heavily with ice. Condensation adheres easily and freezes mightily. Efficiency lessens--especially in the fridge area.

Is this fridge front evented? If not, what type of venting do I need to provide to install it in under-counter in an enclosed space.
Asked by: Bellville
Hi Bellville- THis is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing! Built-in or freestanding capability allows for flexible installation undercounter. Since this unit does not require clearance in the back and sides, it vents air to the front. Play Video: https://www.youtube.com/embed/W9foErrN2dE?rel=0 - Thanks for checking with us!

5.6 cu. ft. Mini Refrigerator in Black is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 175.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from It is OK The door is ridiculously clumsy. The bars holding bottles and jars are made of wire and flop all over the place. Things can fall out very easily. A whole section is devoted to soda or beer cans, neither of which I use. The other shelves on the door are either too small or too large. The freezer is much too narrow, it just barely fits the ice cube trays. It also takes around 24 hours to freeze ice cubes solid. I did not choose this model, my landlord did. It was the only one that fit the cabinet in the kitchen. There is no provision to choose and change the shelves inside the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little mini fridge! This was a replacement for one that we had for 16 years. We are happy with the appearance and performance. We are using it under the counter in a space that was constructed for the original one. Works perfectly. Quiet...seems to be efficient. Keeps things very cold and plenty of space. My one suggestion....please make one without fixed soda can placement. Seems that everyone has that and it is wasted space for us since we are not soda drinkers. I guess this was designed based on a college kid market. Other than that....perfect.

The reason for the 3 stars is because it makes a buzzing noise every so often. I've opened the back panel and it's like the fan/mechanism ramps up and starts buzzing and then it slowly stops, I had wondered if it was rubbing against the back panel, but I can't see anything amiss. . But it is annoying when you are in a meeting. I may have to have it serviced, such a pain and minor annoyance when something is new.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fridge, but no flat plug? Fridge looks great and so far looks wonderful. It pokes out a bit from the base cabinet; if the plug was flat against the wall it would be great. Glass shelves are high quality, I am able to fit beer bottles on one shelf and cans on the shelf above. Would be an easy 5 star if the plug was flat. Much better price and reliability ratings compared to beverage centers with clear front door.

It's only been two weeks, but the fridge arrived in perfect condition and is working great so far. We needed an under-counter fridge for our company office. This is the only one with zero clearance needs under $1000, so...an excellent buy! Thankfully, we don't have a need for the freezer because it's pretty useless. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little refrigerator at a good price I bought this for our bar area. I was looking for a refrigerator for beverages that could also double as extra storage for our main refrigerator. Most bar refrigerators don't get cold enough, but this one does. It works great and holds lots of pop, wine, and our overflow items too. And it cost lots less than a less-functional beverage refrigerator!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what we needed We bought this to serve as our primary fridge during the repair of our kitchen and basement after a flood. It worked out perfectly from taking care of lunches, breakfasts and leftovers for dinner as well as keeping ice packs my husband needed for an injury sufficiently frozen. Now has a new life as a basement fridge.
