No it does not, it does have an igniter. However, you will have to manually press the igniter to relight the pilot after the required 5 minute purge time has expired.

Can I replace my AO Smith 50 Gallon Gas Indoor Water Heater with this?

What about venting- do I need a new venting system or use the existing one? What is a ball-park installation cost, including removal/disposal of existing one?
Asked by: Anonymous
Existing vent system should work. Your plumbing may need some adjustment if fittings don't line up.

50 gal. Tall 9 Year 38,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater-DISCONTINUED is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from ****DO NOT BUY!!!! DO NOT BUY ANYTHING GE!!!!!!!**** DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT!!!!! BUY ANYTHING FROM "GE". We are on or 2nd one now. First one replaced on 6/28/2011. That was the same model PG50T09AVH00. That one we had for just barely 3 years and the "pressure relief valve" started leaking down the side of the tank externally (see pics below). So we had to pay!!!! for a pro-rated replacement warranty and that was over $300. And now the replacement is slowly dying and won't keep water hot. GE says that normal, and 2 different plumbers say that "we got what we paid for, A PIECE OF JUNK!!!!" I called GE and they rattle off some story about it could be this and that, but they "won't send out a replacement just because it isn't hot enough for us." We have slowly had to turn the temp control knob up since summer, and we are now on the last setting. Both Plumbers say it is going to go, but GE said it isn't their problem. Well congrats to you GE on your stand on the issue, but you will never see another dime of our money. The rest of you have been warned!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EZ Install This unit was a breeze to install. I had a harder time removing the old unit. Just make sure to by the Shark Bite fittings and away you go!!! Water Heater is quiet and gets pretty hot pretty quick!! Do not set it above the "B" setting or you will be getting STEAM out of your shower heads!!! Starter worked great, fire was big and yellow at first but quickly settled down to a hot blue flame. Not sure about the operating cost yet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Got it fast, works great. Ordered online and picked up in store to make sure it was in stock. Picked up same day. Installation was pretty easy, just disconnecting old and replacing with new, though a few alterations to length of pipes were necessary. Only confusing part was that the inlet and outlet pipes on top of the new water heater had plastic ends with something blocking the the hole in each. They were not labeled to indicate that these are heat traps, which must remain in place. After I tried unsuccessfully to remove them, thinking they were just plugs, I finally found out their purpose by carefully studying the installation guide. Even in the guide it was not highlighted with a warning. These should be labelled right on the inlet and outlet to avoid a costly mistake by a do-it-yourself installer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just bought this evening We bought this water heater tonight and it was a breeze to install. FYI, we bought our old GE water heater at Home Depot about 5 years ago and it developed a small leak. We called the 1-800 number on the tank and they said we would need a new tank. Well, GE called Home Depot to let them know we were coming and to our VERY pleasant surprise, we received a $250.00 credit towards the purchase of this water heater. My dad was thrilled as that was totally unexpected. It's nice to see a company stand behind its products and honor the 7 year warranty on parts. The staff at the south Plainfield nj Home Depot was very kind and accommodating. Thank you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad buy Although the unit comes with a 9 year warranty. It is not worth the hassle. My unit has been in place less that 6 years and it is leaking at the top. At first the water stopped getting HOT. Replaced the thermostats, top and bottom, heating elements checked out ok. I noticed water at the bottom of the tank and then on the top. I would not recommend this unit based on this. For the money and hassle of replacing a HWT this is not acceptable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Just like how the other reviews have said on how good this product is. It was very easy to install and I have very little knowledge on water heaters. In fact this was my first water heater install and I did it with little to no problem at all. The only advise I can give you is that make sure you have a second pair of hand to help you lift this heater. It is pretty heavy for one person to lift, so I volunteered my wife. Other than that, it should only be a one person job. (I think I owe my wife a trip to the message place)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, Expensive Install This unit gets the job done. I had no idea I could get water that hot, even with it on a low setting. Regarding installation - the contractors my local HD uses were very professional, prompt, courteous, and actually price competitve after research. I wound up paying $1532 to get this installed. Just a word of warning to be prepared... I think the base install was about $300. I figured that wasn't too bad for a house call, labor, and hauling away the old unit. Mine was in a pull-down attic. Add $150 so a "helper" could come out and spend 15 minutes lowering the old one and raising the new one. I had a $50 permit fee. I had a $200 relief value that was new code in my city. I had a $150 charge for 2 other values that were not previously installed (ball valve and something else), but now required by code. There was about $50 for new lines, etc. They (plumbers) really don't itemize things, but rather just give you a total "package" price. Again, was the labor price competitive - I believe so. Just be prepared that your $500-$600 water heater is just the beginning when it comes to the total expense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Job Just had my water heater start leaking and started looking around for installation and replacement of new Water Heater. Called around to many of HD's competitors and found HD had the best price all around. Went ahead and called them at 10:00 a.m. they were there by 1:00p.m and done in under 45 minutes which included removing/disposal of old water heater, cleaning inside utility closet and bleaching area around old water heater area to make sure mold would not appear. Dried the area thoroughly and installed new unit. Explained the upkeep and functions of the new unit. Because it was natural gas it was much better to get a professional and that did happen when I called the HD instead of trying to do it myself. Great job at a low price!
