Customer Questions & Answers

Would I be able to leave this unit unattended in continuous mode with a hose attached to it for draining?

I have a vacation home with a very damp basement. I would like to use this unit to to remove the humidity from the basement, but I would not be in the home for long periods of time.
Asked by: Joseph
Bought this unit at HomeDepot and left it running with a hose to direct the water into a drain, and it failed after about a year. The fan and condenser still run, but the unit does not remove water from the air.

is it energy star rated

Asked by: alangski
I just bought the GE ADEL50LR at HD, and there's an EnergyStar logo on the box, and on the control panel. But, the last line on this HD web page's Specification section says "ENERGY STAR Certified: No"; and the EnergyStar web site shows that the only 50-pint GE EnergyStar Certified dehumidifier is model adeW50LW. Has adeL50LR lost its certification sometime since 2013??

The farmhouse basement in Belle Plaine was flooded from the Arkansas river and after pumping out the water and using the wet-vac, it was time for this dehumidifier to do the rest - for about a week, each overnight, the 50 pint container was full. Now things have settled down to maintaining a 55% humidity and requires emptying every few days. It has done the job for us.

I live in a old home built in 1942, and for almost three years now, I've been dealing with an overabundance of moisture in the house. The moisture seems to affect nearly every room (except for one of the bedrooms and the kitchen) and every closet. I was tired of fighting the mold growth and dealing with the moisture cleanup in the winter (summer months didn't have the same effect), and after ruling out the most obvious causes (a leaking chimney--which no longer leaks as bad as it did and is covered with insulation, an unfinished cellar--which was ruled out by professionals, and the aged siding--which was ruled out by professionals as well), the best option seemed to be to turn to this little guy. And this works wonderfully! My walls are clean of mold and moisture buildup. Porous, unfinished surfaces that were bad to grow mold no longer do, my front and back doors no longer swell in the winter (they were swelling until it was nearly impossible to enter the house), the doors are also not as likely to ice/frost over either, and best of all, the air in the house just seems lighter and dryer. With the 50 pt. size in an 1100 square foot home, I only empty its bucket once a day (there's no convenient place for the drain tube). In the bitter cold days when temperatures dip into the single digits, I've had to dump its bucket twice a day, but that was only when snow was present. Rainy days don't seem to affect its intake, and caring for it is painless. I keep mine on continuous run due to its 5-increment humidity meter because I feel like its easier on the machine to just run all the time as opposed to shutting off for five minutes, maybe, and then kicking back on for ten, shutting off for another five... Plus, continuous run is much less noticeable. The machine becomes white noise pretty quickly, and sometimes, I have to focus to make sure I hear it running. And its noise level is equivalent to a standard fan running at high speed 'cause that's basically all it is. And if you use continuous run, the compressor never kicks off, and the compressor turning on and off is the nosiest part. TL;DR Pros & Cons: PROS: no more mold/moisture issues, wooden doors no longer swell, air is lighter, easy cleanup and maintenance (just hose off the filter and dump the bucket), small size to easily fit anywhere, front vents only so you can push its back against the wall, indicator easily keeps up with how full the bucket is so you can check it at any time with a quick glance, a great partner to other exhaust fans already present in the bathroom CONS: white noise takes a few weeks to get used to, top vent releasing dry air causes a cold draft so point it away from rooms you spend a lot of time in And that's pretty much it. Great purchase, but I will add on here that I bought Home Depot's extended warranty since so many other reviewers said it was necessary. Since I only plan to run my dehumidifier during the winter (since there's really no need for it during the summer), I doubt I'll need the extra warranty, but I figured always err on the side of "better safe than sorry."

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works great until it needs resetting--then you have to pitch it We've been really happy with this product, but when we plugged it in for a second summer of dehumidifying, it didn't collect water, but sounded and seemed like it was running fine. I called GE and they said there's no "reset" button on the unit, so the only thing you can do when something gets goofed up in the electronics is to throw it away. Crazy. The GE person did tell me that she had put in requests for a reset button because of other customers' experiences with this. I hope they do--hope they're not just trying to get you to buy a new unit every couple years. I was expecting this to run capably every summer for several years. When I buy a new one, it won't be a GE.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Expected it to last longer I bought this model from Home Depot in spring of 2014 following a sump pump failure that made our basement extremely humid after we cleaned up some leaking water. Worked fine for about 1 1/2 years, although I will agree with others that it NEVER shut off, even when the desired humidity level was reached. (And no, it was not set in continuous mode.) Performance started to decline a couple of months ago. I could go a week between emptying bucket rather than the usual 1-2 days. Then it stopped drawing water completely a couple of weeks ago. Motor works fine, it seems to be running normally, but isn't. Need to get a new one and will not get a GE.

The unit seems well made, but when I opened the box at home, a very, very strong smell of burning plastic filled my entire first floor (about 800 sq ft - kitchen, dining, living room, entry area), and wafted up the stairwell. I've run the unit on high with a very good (near hospital grade) air filter next to it overnight, and it still smells. I'm hoping this is a one-off dud unit. Taking it back and exchanging for another - this time I'm opening it at the store. Heavy - about 50 pounds to deal with.

The external drain hose connection is much better/easier than using the hose adapter I had to purchase separately for my old unit. The only caution is to ensure the drain bucket is fully and properly seated...the first time, I didn't have it seated right and the bucket filled with water. After emptying it and reseating it better, it's worked well since. I've run it over 250 hours as I've had to reset the Clean Filter light once now. Overall, I'm pleased with this product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed in the Lifespan I've had this product for just a little over a year and it's no longer functioning properly. The fan now starts and stops periodically while the dehumidifier is turned on with no rhyme or reason. It's become an increasingly worse problem and now I'm searching for a replacement. I never used the product for more than a couple of hours each day. For what it's worth, it did a good job pulling moisture out of the air when it was functional but I'm shocked at the longevity.

This unit worked great, pulling the moisture from my basement for about nine months. Now the fan runs and the condensing unit runs for approximately 5 minutes then shuts off leaving only the fan to run. The temperature in basement is above the low temp guideline. No water is collecting in tank. I think it is within the one year guarantee, how do I proceed with a return? I have tried all the troubleshooting ideas in the manual. Please help! Coleus nut
