Customer Questions & Answers

Would I be able to leave this unit unattended in continuous mode with a hose attached to it for draining?

I have a vacation home with a very damp basement. I would like to use this unit to to remove the humidity from the basement, but I would not be in the home for long periods of time.
Asked by: Joseph
Bought this unit at HomeDepot and left it running with a hose to direct the water into a drain, and it failed after about a year. The fan and condenser still run, but the unit does not remove water from the air.

Asked by: Billy
I'd go with the rep.'s statement.

is it energy star rated

Asked by: alangski
I just bought the GE ADEL50LR at HD, and there's an EnergyStar logo on the box, and on the control panel. But, the last line on this HD web page's Specification section says "ENERGY STAR Certified: No"; and the EnergyStar web site https://www.energystar.gov/productfinder/product/certified-dehumidifiers/results?scrollTo=574&search_text=&brand_name_isopen=0&product_capacity_pints_day_filter=45+%3C+capacity+%E2%89%A4+54&markets_filter=United+States&zip_code_filter=&product_types=Select+a+Product+Category&sort_by=energy_factor_l_kwh&sort_direction=desc&page_number=0&lastpage=0&brand_name_filter=GE shows that the only 50-pint GE EnergyStar Certified dehumidifier is model adeW50LW. Has adeL50LR lost its certification sometime since 2013??

My first one worked for approximately 18 months, then started shutting off on its on. I was told that it could not be fixed so I bought another one. It keeps my basement dry and stops the mildew from formimg. It works well when it runs properly. I just hope this one does not quit on me like the first one.

Bucket full indicator light on so removed bucket. Held handle in my left hand and tilted bucket to right where the spout is. The water level is too high and spills as I try to empty it. This time it slipped from my hands and the water is all over the floor destroying many, many paper items. It is too full and unwieldy. I have used a bucket dehumidifier for years but the machine stopped when the bucket was not filled nearly to the top! If the water level is adjustable, I did not find that in the instructions.

My first one lasted 3 years and then the hose would not drain and water emptied into the bucket. Plastic hose connection, typical with all these dehumids, cracks easily so be careful not to tighten it more than hand pressure.Bought a replacement unit this month and hopefully it will last for at least 3 years. From reading CR reviews of the top rated CR dehumids,it seems all encounter the same problems and have limited shelf life. Many credit cards extend the warranty an additional year.

First of all, it's not like the one in the picture but it is like the picture on the box. The difference is this item model number ends in a W and not an R. From the looks of it, I would say mine is an upgraded version of this one. Well, here goes... PROS: I really like the sleek and modern look of mine. It came out of the box almost completely ready. Remove the tape and styrofoam and you're pretty much ready to go. This product is in our 1940s home, in the 888sq open/unfinished basement. It replaces our 22yo Wood dehumidifier. I'm using the bucket for now but mostly because I'm curious as to how much water it draws in a day. I initially ran it the first 24 hrs at 50% RH. Four days later, I've bumped it to 55% as it felt a bit too dry in my basement. It is drawing a full bucket each 24-36 hours (approx 2 gallons). It cycles on and off as it's suppose to but it did take most of the first day to get it to 50% so I stopped worrying about the constant running once it hit the desired RH and cycled on and off. Noise level is good, I run it on medium. It is in the basement so we don't even notice it at all upstairs. As a matter of fact, I often open the basement door to see if it's running...which brings me to the only Con. CON: It is suppose to sound a 10 second alarm when the bucket is full for more than 3 minutes. I happened to hear it shut off and knew it should be about full so I went downstairs to wait to see what the alarm sounds like. It never went off. :( Bummer. Everything else is working just fine but I sure would like that alarm to alert me when the bucket is full. I don't want to switch to a hose yet because I like to use the water for my plants for now. I can't see returning it simply because of the alarm although I may regret that decision. Hey! Home Depot...if you want to drop one off and switch it out with mine, I would be okay with that. :) LOL Yeah, I know. Probably NOT gonna happen. I hope my review helps someone.

"Yes" (If you don't mind the hour "run around" from GE if it fails to function properly while still under warranty.) Ours has failed 4 months into operation. Fan speed won't adjust to either medium or low speeds. Control panel problem. It has worked just great until just about a day ago. (1/23/2017). The number supplied in the owners manual has been disconnected and is no longer in service. After being given five different phone numbers to call, we finally got through. The Arkansas telephone# we were finally given by GE is 1-479-549-3015. GE sends out a shipping box to pack the defective unit in to ship back to them. They, in turn, will ship a rebuilt unit back. All their cost. We'll see.... Unfortunately for us, most GE products haven't performed well (except a microwave unit) for us since our first experience with GE since 1977. Our nickname for GE is "General Junk". When the replacement unit fails (out of warranty) we'll search out a different company's unit. H-Depot's pricing was OK.

The external drain hose connection is much better/easier than using the hose adapter I had to purchase separately for my old unit. The only caution is to ensure the drain bucket is fully and properly seated...the first time, I didn't have it seated right and the bucket filled with water. After emptying it and reseating it better, it's worked well since. I've run it over 250 hours as I've had to reset the Clean Filter light once now. Overall, I'm pleased with this product!

I live in a old home built in 1942, and for almost three years now, I've been dealing with an overabundance of moisture in the house. The moisture seems to affect nearly every room (except for one of the bedrooms and the kitchen) and every closet. I was tired of fighting the mold growth and dealing with the moisture cleanup in the winter (summer months didn't have the same effect), and after ruling out the most obvious causes (a leaking chimney--which no longer leaks as bad as it did and is covered with insulation, an unfinished cellar--which was ruled out by professionals, and the aged siding--which was ruled out by professionals as well), the best option seemed to be to turn to this little guy. And this works wonderfully! My walls are clean of mold and moisture buildup. Porous, unfinished surfaces that were bad to grow mold no longer do, my front and back doors no longer swell in the winter (they were swelling until it was nearly impossible to enter the house), the doors are also not as likely to ice/frost over either, and best of all, the air in the house just seems lighter and dryer. With the 50 pt. size in an 1100 square foot home, I only empty its bucket once a day (there's no convenient place for the drain tube). In the bitter cold days when temperatures dip into the single digits, I've had to dump its bucket twice a day, but that was only when snow was present. Rainy days don't seem to affect its intake, and caring for it is painless. I keep mine on continuous run due to its 5-increment humidity meter because I feel like its easier on the machine to just run all the time as opposed to shutting off for five minutes, maybe, and then kicking back on for ten, shutting off for another five... Plus, continuous run is much less noticeable. The machine becomes white noise pretty quickly, and sometimes, I have to focus to make sure I hear it running. And its noise level is equivalent to a standard fan running at high speed 'cause that's basically all it is. And if you use continuous run, the compressor never kicks off, and the compressor turning on and off is the nosiest part. TL;DR Pros & Cons: PROS: no more mold/moisture issues, wooden doors no longer swell, air is lighter, easy cleanup and maintenance (just hose off the filter and dump the bucket), small size to easily fit anywhere, front vents only so you can push its back against the wall, indicator easily keeps up with how full the bucket is so you can check it at any time with a quick glance, a great partner to other exhaust fans already present in the bathroom CONS: white noise takes a few weeks to get used to, top vent releasing dry air causes a cold draft so point it away from rooms you spend a lot of time in And that's pretty much it. Great purchase, but I will add on here that I bought Home Depot's extended warranty since so many other reviewers said it was necessary. Since I only plan to run my dehumidifier during the winter (since there's really no need for it during the summer), I doubt I'll need the extra warranty, but I figured always err on the side of "better safe than sorry."
