Customer Questions & Answers

Everytime I run a cycle there is a small pool of water coming out from underneath the front of the dryer. Just installed yesterday.

Asked by: Hollie
Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. Congratulations on your new dryer! If you are seeing water under the dryer after a cycle, please verify that your dryer is installed and vented properly. The dryer may be unable to blow the moisture outside. Please check that the venting to the outside is not kicked, crushed or clogged. Use only rigid metal 4” diameter ductwork inside the dryer cabinet. Use only rigid metal or UL listed flexible metal 4” diameter ductwork for exhausting to the outside. Venting must conform to local building codes. Do not use the dryer until the venting has been corrected. I hope this helps! Thank you for checking with us!

Does the metal galvanized back plate on the Dryer have an inset made to provide additional space from vent to left rear corner of machine to rear wall

I only have 30 1/4 inches from wall to bi-fold door opening for depth! My old GE dryer is 20 1/4 inches in depth including door handle and 4 inch vent hose between dryer and back wall for venting? will this model fit the same opening with the indented backplate and flush door handle to allow venting?
Asked by: pusher
Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. The dryer depth is 28-1/4". The Quick Specs state that if it is installed in an alcove or closet, then the minimum clearances between the dryer cabinet and adjacent walls or other surfaces are 0" on either side and 3" in the front and rear. Please see the specifications link below for additional information: I hope this helps! Thank you for checking with us!

4 Prong or 3 Prong Outlet?

Does this electric dryer have a 4 prong or 3 prong type outlet? Thanks!
Asked by: Anonymous
Typical home (clothes) dryers require only a 3 "prong" outlet since, by code, the equipment ground is connected to the neutral. This is also common with stoves or some fixed appliances. Installations of many years ago did indeed have an outlet for 4 conductors but the code has since changed. Whether the supply circuit for the dryer is 120/240 volt, single phase, 3 wire or 208Y/120 volt (derived from a 3 phase, 4 wire, wye-connected system), a bonding strap or a wire secured to the frame can effectively ground the non-current-carrying metal parts.

specifications say "power cord not included" What does this mean? That means to plug in cost extra?

Asked by: Anonymous
If you want a brand new cord, you have to pay extra. If you reuse your old cord they won't hook up the dryer for you. It's your choice. :)

is the venting location optional?

want to make certain that it is- because two other sites specify vent location as rear only
Asked by: maggygee
Hello, this is Kim with GE. This dryer can be vented one of 4-Ways (Rear; Right; Left & Bottom). The installation instructions provide information on each. Thank you for considering GE.

door reversible?

I noticed in a comparison of models that this one says it's right swinging.. meaning not reversible? I see on the picture of it though what appears to be hinge marks on the left side and a door catch on the right (as well as left).. it looks like it can be reversed so the handle is on the left as I need it to be.. does this model allow reversing the door?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes- I had mine changed over to the opposite side when it was installed.

Does the electrical supply need a neutral ground?

Asked by: Anonymous
Hello, Thank you for choosing the GE electric dryer model # GTDP490EDWS. Yes, it will need a neutral ground. The dryer must be properly installed and located in accordance with the installation instructions. Please view the installation instructions available on the GE Appliance website. Each dryer must be on its own circuit. Electric dryer power cords are sold seperately. * Properly grounded dryer to conform with all governing codes and ordinances. * Connect to a properly rated and protected power supply circuit to avoid electrical overload. * Install where it will not be exposed to temperatures below freezing or exposed to weather. 7.0 cu. ft. Capacity DuraDrum Electric Dryer with HE SensorDry in White is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1709.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap plastic dial for dryer setting I bought this dryer a little over a year ago. I realize it is an entry level dryer, so the settings are basic, but the dial used to set the settings has cracked and broken twice. The first time it happened, I wasn't sure why my dryer wasn't turning on, so I called an appliance repair service. It literally took the repairman less than 2 minutes to replace the dial and charge me $100! It has happened again and this time I am trying to order and replace the part myself. Could be one of the reasons GE is no longer selling this model.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for the busy household We bought this about a year and a half ago and the timer mechanism has already needed to be replaced. I live the dryer itself but frustrated that I have to replace a part already

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Used this for 4 months and the dials have broken TWICE. No the dryer isn't starting unless the dial is kept pushed down and in a certain spot. Very cheaply made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Dryer The dryer works fantastic. Other reviewer were upset that the signal was too loud. It is loud but you can turn it down. It has to be loud enough for you to hear it. If you don't like it turn it off. There is a button on it. It has a very short drying time compared to my other dryer. There is SO much room in it. I can't believe it. Also, I have never had a dryer with a light inside. Now I won't leave any socks or anything else in it. The lint trap is a little flimsy but I just leave it in and run my finger over it. I don't want to take it out too much. Anyway, it works just as well. I have only used the cotton control for drying the clothes and it works good. I would recommend this dryer to all of my friends. Way to go GE

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Dryer, horrible (cheap) knobs 3 out of 4 of my knobs have cracked from turning on the main setting (more dry/less dry, etc). We have owned this dryer for almost 2 years and it has worked great except I have to keep trading the cracked knob with one of the uncracked knobs so it will turn on the main setting (which gets used the most). Since I'm on my last good knob, I have to go buy new knobs so I will be able to use my dryer. I really don't want to resort to turning the knob with pliers. GE needs to come up with a more sturdy/durable (not cheap plastic) knob. Other than the knobs, it has been a good dryer. Buy extra knobs if GE doesn't fix this problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Am pleased with this product so far. My previous dryer was a GE product which lasted 20 years (and might have gone longer if I had taken it apart to clean stray lint which eventually caused motor failure). To say I am pleased with this new dryer is an understatement. It is quiet, attractive, fast and efficient, and does not over-dry the clothes. The light colored interior of the DuraDrum is well lit, feels rugged, is quieter when coins or other metal objects fall from the laundry, and is an improvement over the older grey enamel in nearly every way. I opted for the excess capacity for comforters and sleeping bags, and it should be mentioned that some of that capacity is gained at the expense of an increase in cabinet depth---so be aware if you have a tight space. The HE SensorDry is expected to save energy by shutting off the heat when the clothes are dry, but allowing the tumbling to continue to keep clothes wrinkle free. This make loads of various sizes no issue in setting the timer, though I mostly use the AutoDry cycles. The mechanical controls and display (versus more fully-electronic versions coming out now) gives me confidence that should a repair be necessary, it might not require the entire panel be replaced. I place the capabilities of this dryer up with full-featured high-end models, but at a more value-conscious price. The only negative has been noted elsewhere (flimsy lint screen), but I suspect that handling it gently will go a long way toward preservation. If you have concerns about this, order an extra, but by being careful it should outlast all but the clumsiest users. I have not yet used the buzzer feature, so I can't comment on whether it is audible when I am distant from the basement, where it resides. I would like to see this dryer offered in an almond or off-white version, like some other GE models. I would recommend this dryer to anyone who is budget conscious, wants a solid appliance, and doesn't feel the need to succumb to the all-stainless movement which seems to be sweeping the US market.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good Dryer has Design Flaw Dryer is very good except for a design flaw with the lint filter. Lint filter does not sit properly and lint flies out all over the place when you open the door. We've have three new lint filters replaced by GE service people with no change. Service person agreed that it was a design flaw. If you don't care about lint flying out every time you open the door, then buy it. If you do, buy another brand or another model with a different lint filter placement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job I am pleased with the dryer as it works well. The sensor for drying is great. The clothes have not been damp or overdry when the dryer shuts off. The interior light did not work, so I called GE warranty. They sent out a repair person, who diagnosed the problem as a burned out bulb. He didn't know when he could get a replacement. He seemed a bit disgusted that he had spent a good bit of time coming to my house just to find out that the problem was just a burned out bulb and not a loose wire or something similar. I then called GE back and they very promptly sent out a replacement bulb, which I installed. The lint trap is of a strange design, but it seems to work efficiently.
