Customer Questions & Answers

Dehumidifier vs air conditioner

The entire 2nd floor of my house (1200 Sq ft) is very uncomfortable this time of year. My HAVC simply cannot adequately cool the entire house. Ceiling fans help some, but not enough. Will this unit pull enough moisture out of the air to make a noticeable difference in the temperature? Would I be better off buying a portable air conditioning unit?

Hello, I am happy to help. The dehumidifier will add some heat to the room, and if the area is not open, the dehumidifier may not operate as well. We suggest having your HVAC checked out. The technician can provide you the best alternatives for your situation. Sincerely, Lisa from GE Appliances

What kind of hose am I supposed to use for this?

I need to know what hose to buy in order to hook up to this dehumidifier so it will drain on it's own. There are a lot of hoses & I don't want to buy the wrong one.
Asked by: Anonymous
A standard "1/2-inch" garden hose will be fine.

What is the height of the drain hose connection?

How far off the floor is the center of the drain hose connection?
Asked by: Anonymous
6 to 8 inches. It is at the top of the water collection basket inside, once removed.

This dehumidifier worked fine for about 18 months, keeping our basement at 50% humidity while draining through a hose to a floor drain. Unfortunately, this fall I noticed the humidity creeping up to the 60's even though the humidifier was still running around the clock. I verified that the filter was clean and the hose was clear - no problems there. Finally, I popped off the outer case and discovered that the condensing coil was completely rusted. I suspect that all of that rusting has caused a pinhole leak and I am slowly loosing refrigerant. It's pretty upsetting to think that at this price I won't even get two years of service out of this thing. I'll try a different brand next year.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy it We are on our third model. Each one has stopped pulling water after only a few months. We were able to exchange the first one for a new one under warranty. The second one lasted only a few months. GE did reimburse for the second one. We did try a third of the same after they reimbursed. And we cannot believe that it is now not pulling water after two months. We cannot understand how this product can be so bad. Three bad ones. With GE name!! Don't they make jet engines? Pretty scarey. Don't waste your time on this model. Engineering is wrong!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY!! Similar to so many other reviews, my unit has failed after less than 2 yrs of use. The fan runs but it no longer dehumidifies the basement air. I suppose the coolant has leaked out. What a piece of junk!! I also have a Crosley unit that's of similar size and has been running fine on the other side of the basement for over 10 yrs. Stay away from this GE product - it is absolute garbage. Less than 2 yrs service for $300. Total rip-off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rusted out the inside within 18 monnths - no longer works (fan runs, but doesn't pull out moisture) I bought this from Home Depot in April, 2014. After having it off all winter long, I powered it up in the Spring of 2016. A few days go by with it running (fan on) and it should be draining through hose. After it doesnt appear to be working, I switch to bucket. After that fails to draw any water out, I unplug the unit, put it on its back and look up inside of it and the entire thing is completely rusted. This was sitting in an otherwise dry basement the entire time. It was never outside, never in any standing water or anything. What a waste of money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great so far Have only had it set up for an hour and it's already collected a fair amount of water. Slightly noisy on the lowest setting but no rattling. You can't complain about it being loud because it does have a fan in it. Someone complained about the pump for the slightly more expensive one so I got this one. I can imagine that one would be louder because it has another motor in it so if it's in your house near you a lot just take the extra time to empty the bucket and stick with this model. And it does generate some heat

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drying wet carpet. We bought this unit after some water entered our basement following heave rain. After extracting the water with a carpet cleaner we used this dehumidifier and fans over either days. It worked very well. Was easy to set up, drain the reservoir and move around. Initially we had to empty every four hours but towards day six the frequency became every eight hours. I would highly recommend this unit for any area larger than a single room up to 800 square feet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good price but average quality Replaced a unit that stopped dehumidifying after three years. Difficult to attach drain hose without leaking due to design but works after several tries. Humidity setting and actual reading don't seem to agree with unit shutting off. It appears that the actual humidity has to go below the setting before shutting off.

It ran fine throughout the spring and summer. Unplugged it and did not need use it from about October 2015 through June 2016. Plugged it back in, ran it non-stop and did not generate a single drop in to the bucket. I would not recommend this product to anyone - don't buy it!!
