Dehumidifier vs air conditioner

The entire 2nd floor of my house (1200 Sq ft) is very uncomfortable this time of year. My HAVC simply cannot adequately cool the entire house. Ceiling fans help some, but not enough. Will this unit pull enough moisture out of the air to make a noticeable difference in the temperature? Would I be better off buying a portable air conditioning unit?
Asked by: JHR56
I have both air conditioner and dehumidifier to manage moisture level in the air - I have a very damp basement and to control the moisture throughout the house, I have both air conditioned air and the dehumidifier.

What kind of hose am I supposed to use for this?

I need to know what hose to buy in order to hook up to this dehumidifier so it will drain on it's own. There are a lot of hoses & I don't want to buy the wrong one.

A standard "1/2-inch" garden hose will be fine.

What is the height of the drain hose connection?

How far off the floor is the center of the drain hose connection?

6 to 8 inches. It is at the top of the water collection basket inside, once removed.

The first lasted 7 months and the refrigeration circuit failed, no compressor, and the second one lasted 4 months, again the the compressor failed!! GE customer service or GE NO customer service is a joke and the warranty is not worth the paper it is printed on!! The consumer must package up the unit and send it back to GE for evaluation, price $80-90. If the unit is past the 90 day Home Depot warranty period you are basically stuck with having to toss the defective one and purchase a new one. That is some kind of warranty!! Just another junk GE product! Home Depot should think about getting rid of the GE line!!

There are so many mixed reviews, and 43 of Amazon's reviewers have 5-Star 12%; 1-Star 65%, Yikes! Of course I read these negative reviews after purchasing, unboxing, and setting this device up, but then I learned I have an upgraded revised unit... The L2 version! Well all the negative reviews on Amazon and elsewhere reflect the ADEL70LRL1 model, whereas I have ADEL70LRL2, so my review pertains to this L2 version which I recently bought at the always helpful and friendly local Home Depot in Yorkville, IL. My review will follow after I list the important steps I took prior to turning on the GE ADEL70LR new L2 model currently being sold on Home Depot's store shelves. As one should always do when transporting and setting up a device with refrigerant and a compressor is let it sit in proper position 2 - 24 hours before turning it on; especially if the unit was not in the upright position on the store shelf. To spare the long drawn out details, basically the Chemicals within the refrigeration apparatus of anything that uses a refrigerant/compressor must come to rest in the bottom of the compressor before turning the device on. Since my dehumidifier was in an upright position at the store and I was careful in transporting it home, I just let it sit about 3 hours before turning it on. If your dehumidifier was laying on it's side, upside down, or banged about, I would give it 12-24 hours before turning the device on after setting it up in order for the operating chemicals to settle in the lowest point of the compressor so that oils and refrigerant aren't up in the pipes where they shouldn't be at and make the compressor work harder and less efficient, thus, shortening it's overall longevity. Unfortunately most dehumidifier manuals don't spell out this necessary step in any detail if it's even mentioned at all... I also followed the manual's instructions to run in "Continuous Mode" for 24 hours. This initial 24 hour run-in allows the chemicals to stabilize... sort of like a break-in for a new motorized, moving parts, and chemically contained compressor. My Review: This ADEL70LRL2 has a very solid build quality judging by the smooth caster wheels, solid feel drain tub, very responsive buttons, silent compressor, and smooth sounding fan. The dehumidifier is in my unfinished basement surrounded by poured cement walls which is an echo chamber, and I cannot hear the unit running at highest fan speed upstairs even with the basement door open; I repeat the compressor is silent. PROS: Quiet Running Machine Cool Running Machine (Basement Temp Dropped 4deg F in 2 hours) Instant Humidity Removal Smell and Feel of Cleaner Air CONS: None It is my opinion that perhaps GE's predecessor, the ADEL70LRL1, had problems (Based on many negative reviews) that were addressed with this revised L2 model now being sold at Home Depot. If GE is to instill buyer confidence again, I believe this ADEL70LRL2 model will be rock solid in years to come, and regain their status as making a good quality, durable Dehumidifiers that will provide customers years of service. I have owned many Dehumidifiers, and this GE ADEL70LRL2 model has the most solid feel, and the quietest operating sound of any dehumidifier I've ever owned. Plus in just a few hours the humidity and temperature have dropped not just by my gauges, but by overall feel and smell of the air down here. Only time will truly tell, however, should the dehumidifier continue to run as it is now, then I'd say GE will regain consumer confidence in their products again since the L1 model is highly criticized by many consumers...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Life Expectancy Two years ago I purchased my first GE 70 pint dehumidifier of this model, which only lasted 13 months. Sadly to say that GE would not do anything for me because it was 28 days past the one year warranty. I then purchase a different, well know brand, from Amazon, which only lasted 6 months. The company did refund my purchase price, but I had to wait about 6 weeks to receive my money back, in the form of a credit card, for the amount of my purchase. So instead of waiting that long of a time to be without a dehumidifier, I had to purchase the new one with out of pocket cash. I then purchase the same model from Lowes because it had the best factory warranty in the business. This time I also purchased the extended warranty from Lowes just in case I had trouble after the factory warranty ran out. To make this review shorter I went through 2 more of this same model without ever getting past 9 months of use before having to replace it. So now, I decided to give GE another chance to see if they finally worked out the bugs, which then I will update this review. By the way, I have checked everything that could of been an installation problem created by me, such as, voltage level, power surge, level position placement, and a sizing problem. By the way, I'm only trying to keep my crawlspace at about the 50% level, so the dehumidifier cycles on and off and does not run 100% of the time. I wished these newer dehumidifiers had the life expectancy of the older models of 30 years ago, because some of them are still running and doing what they are designed to do. I'll even except 5 years of use.

The drywall mud wasn't drying and the muggy weather made it unreasonable to run the heating system. I rented off the area with plastic and set this up with a drain line running out to the deck. I set it on continuous run and I was amazed at how much water started draining. This has me back on track, no need to reschedule the cabinets. I am concerned about the longevity of this. It feels kind of flimsy for the construction world. I fully expect it to fall over in the truck and self destruct (anyone with employee's understand?) So I bought the home depot warranty and put it in a Ziploc bags and duct taped it to the machine.

It replaces a Frigidaire FAD704DWD that was part of a recent recall. Too bad. I really liked it and would have gotten another Frigidaire but for recall concerns. Concerning this unit, the good news: it works. The not so good news: The manual says that when the bucket is removed, it will shut off. It doesn't. Went back to the store and tried the floor model...same. I can see the kill switch when the the bucket is out, but I don't know if it's broken or non functional by design. I contacted GE support; not too helpful. They didn't answer my question; just restated that the unit is a "return to vendor", that is, if there is a problem with it, it will be replaced per the warranty (not repaired). My concern is that the replacement will have more problems. This one works in all other respects, and it's also a short warranty (purchased HDPP to offset this). So, for the time being, I am holding onto and using the product. Time will tell I am now turning the unit off when I have to empty the bucket.

This dehumidifier worked fine for about 18 months, keeping our basement at 50% humidity while draining through a hose to a floor drain. Unfortunately, this fall I noticed the humidity creeping up to the 60's even though the humidifier was still running around the clock. I verified that the filter was clean and the hose was clear - no problems there. Finally, I popped off the outer case and discovered that the condensing coil was completely rusted. I suspect that all of that rusting has caused a pinhole leak and I am slowly loosing refrigerant. It's pretty upsetting to think that at this price I won't even get two years of service out of this thing. I'll try a different brand next year.

Had this two weeks and it started roaring - works but makes a terrible noise that we can hear upstairs (product is in basement). This unit worked well for 14 months in Michigan which means about 7 months of operation. The compressor quite and the guarantee is 12 months. Don't buy not durable. I thought GE would be a good brand name. I bought a Chinese made one as CHEAP as possible. Brand names are just more expensive not a higher quality.
