Is it good for bedroom noise-wise?

Asked by: Anonymous
We just got ours for the living room, and it's unpleasantly loud. To hear the television over it, you have to crank up the I can't imaging falling asleep to this! Wouldn't recommend it.

Fan is a little noisy but not a problem for me. You can always set the fan to low instead of auto. Besides it is white noise

Customer Reviews

8,000 BTU 115-Volt Electronic Window Air Conditioner with Remote is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money. Bought this a/c on June 2, 2012. Installed easily, worked fine. After mild summer usage I cleaned the filter and stored the unit in a utility closet. Set up the a/c this June and the compressor did not work. It was still under warranty, GE told us they would rebate the unit price instead of sending a repairman. Got the "voucher" today, with lots of restrictions and a twelve week expiration date. I must first purchase another GE product, remit proof of payment, submit voucher, and hope for reimbursement! Unfortunately I read Consumer Reports poor ratings review after purchase. Now I have a very heavy window fan. Do not waste your time or money on GE!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A real letdown from past GE Units GE really put out an inferior product here. I have purchased GE window AC units for the last 10 years for my apt in NYC. They have always been efficient, reliable and fairly quiet. The noise level was the main selling point for me in buying another GE. This unit, however has a really loud fan, even when the compressor isn't running. I really don't understand why the fan only setting has to put out so much noise! Compressor noise I understand, but fan noise? That's a design flaw, in my opinion. I'm really dissapointed and don't understand why GE, after so many years of manufacturing a good unit would suddenly change to this inferior loud unit. I'd take it back if I could.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I already gave it away. When I read the other reviews about how loud this a.c. was, I thought, "oh, how loud can it be? It can't be louder than the 10 year old GE I was replacing." In reality, it was like installing one of those large industrial fans in my living room. I never turned the fan beyond "low" because it was so loud. But, I could have learned to tolerate that had it worked well. After the recent hot and humid days, water actually sprayed out of the front grill. I was so glad that I kept the old a.c. as back up because I have now replaced the new one with it. Hard to believe that trying to replace the same GE, 8000 btu air conditioner with a newer model would be such a bad experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little Air conditioner I bought this online as I can't carry an AC by myself any longer. I was not the least disappointed! It installed easily in my bedroom window keeping ti perfect temp in 90 degree weather.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Highly disappointed. Unit was bought in 2013 and it worked great straight out of the box, same goes for 2014. Considering it's been only been used for roughly 4-5 months in total, one would expect the same performance for 2015. Wrong! Only once the unit hit 83 degrees and it was late at night - still no where close to the desired temperature. Every other time it contends to maintain 88 degrees. I don't know if it's the sensor or compressor that has decided to move on, but either way it's inexcusable. And yes, I cleaned the filter, the 'fins' are pretty much still straight, there isn't any debris. The 2 stars are for the 2 summers it actually worked. Well, time to head back and enjoy my uncomfortable 88 degree blowing fan...I won't be replacing it with another GE unless they're willing to stand by their product and replace it for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality Product I bought this and had it delivered. It's replacing a 10 year old 8000BTU window unit and we're using it in our condo in Chicago. I debated between the LG and the GE but I have a LG portable A/C unit and the temp gauge sucks so it never turns off and always says it's 80 degrees in the room--which isn't accurate. We've been running this GE unit non-stop for 5 days and it's been wonderful. The best part is that the thermostat works pretty well and the unit will kick off for long periods of time when the room is cool. It cooled down our 12 X 12 room with 10 foot high ceilings and keeps the two adjacent bedrooms cool enough too. I just bought another one for the other side of the condo. Some people complain about the noise but I think it's fine--it's quieter than most every other A/C unit I've owned. There is a tag on the front of it that says the average yearly energy cost is $59 which I love. Two of these units will cost me less to run during the summer than the three older units I started the summer with.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from To Dead after 2 summers To Dead after 2 summers. I installed my GE window unit last year at about this time. I also stored it in a shed about 10' away and wrapped in plastic. I reinstalled it this year (2 weeks ago) and it doesn't cool. Fan blows but that's it. Not a degree of difference on fan or cool. It seems a bit noisy but I don't know how it is rated. Filter was kept clean, etc. I too will be looking for a different brand. They may be manufactured in the same factory for all I know but I am very disappointed in this product. Texas is hot but only one year of service??? Dead after one summer!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy if you want a good night's sleep I bought this unit just in advance of a heat wave to cool 150 SF bedroom since my 10 year old AC was on the way out last summer. I was shocked at how loud it was - but the worst part was that the unit would reach a temp and then cycle off completely, allowing the room to heat up. I woke REPEATEDLY and had to keep getting up to lower the temperature - I would have slept better with no AC and the window open. A complete waste of money and a HUGE disappointment. Will try to see if I can return it. AWFUL!
