Customer Questions & Answers

What is the noise level of this refrigerator

Asked by: Kevin
We've had this refrigerator for 2.5 months and consider it extremely and annoyingly noisy compared to our prior refrigerator and friends refrigerators. After the first day, the noise level to reach operating temp did decrease, but it is still exceedingly noisy since then. Even my husband even thinks this is an overly noisy refrigerator. Even our running dishwasher (a GE) is way, way quieter than this fridge!

27.7 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator in Black is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 45.

YES, it is a monster of a machine, so make sure you measure correctly! We went from a side by side to the French door/bottom freezer and can't believe the amount of food it holds. I am at a quandary trying to decide what fits in the 2 thin shelves on the door side where the ice maker Is. I've found the only thing so far that works is butter. But I don't mind that cause there is plenty of room elsewhere for everything else I've ever needed. It runs much quieter than our previous fridge ( but that thing was going on 22 years old) and we love the dual ice maker. It makes ice quickly. We looked for 4 months for a new fridge but the wait was so worth it. This appliance MORE than meets our expectations!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slate is the new Stainless. This is not your parents' refrigerator! This replaced a 27CuFt unit and even though it is slightly bigger, it fit perfectly in the space with little room to spare, so be sure you get your measurements right. The new-style hinges work well to allow the doors to open with minimal clearance issues. The French-Door refrigerator has all the modern features with Lighted Ice and Water in the door. The ice-maker is in the refrigerator compartment and is smaller than older refrigerators but works well for average households. We hold parties frequently so we opted for the add-on ice-maker in the freezer compartment (an easy self-install). The Auto-Fill feature allows you to place any size container under the water fill spout, push a button, and walk away. It senses the size of the container and automatically fills it to the top. It works great, but don't add ice to the container first, as sometimes that confuses the sensor and you might get overfilled. The slate color is like a medium grey and goes well with other stainless appliances as it has stainless steel handles. And the color is easier to clean than stainless. It's the wave of future kitchen color schemes. There are plenty of configuration options inside the refrigerator and freezer to help you arrange your food products. Please notice that the Interior LED lighting goes from dim to full brightness slowly, so that in the early morning, when you open the refrigerator door, you do not get blinded by the full blast of LED lighting - Cool! There is a built-in easy-access water filter in the top, left refrigerator compartment, and the water is nice and cold. My experience with some modern refrigerators is that in order to save energy, they make more noise. This unit is quiet - no strange sounds. I checked the temperatures with a thermometer, which you can adjust from the front panel, and it holds the temperatures spot-on. Overall, a big win. If you need more ice, self-install the optional freezer-compartment ice-maker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good refrigerator! I was slightly concerned because of all the negative reviews for a similar product, especially the noisy reviews. Having the refrigerator up and running, for some time now, I find it not overly noisy and would consider it very normal! My older refrigerator made the same or more noise at times. I will start with the delivery company. They called the day before and gave me a four hour delivery window. A few hours later I received a call from GE telling me the delivery company unboxed the refrigerator and on the right side there was a three inch paint scratch. The lady was very polite and said they would order a new one for me but delivery would be delayed. I told her to deliver it as is since the right side would be against the wall and not visible. She also said they would remove my old refrigerator and since it still worked they would put it in my garage. Very nice experience! The delivery company called me when they were 30 minutes away. The men were extremely professional, polite and very respectful of our home and both refrigerators. They even noticed a flaw in the ice water line and installed a new one. The set up the refrigerator, leveled it and cleaned up all the packing materials. They went over the important features. After my wife came home she noticed the left refrigerator door top had a good size dent in it. I immediately called GE who offered to bring us a new unit. I hate to see them have to pay the delivery people to come out plus the expense they will have by bringing us a new unit then reselling the unit we now have and I suggested they just order a new door and install it. After a few days they called me back and unable to just replace door and delivered a new refrigerator to us. GE was worried the refrigerator might have been dropped and to avoid future issues they thought it best to just deliver a new refrigerator. I think they made a wise decision. The new refrigerator is dent free but one door sticks out slightly more than the other door. There is no adjustment for this. The delivery experience for the replacement was just as good as the original delivery. While the refrigerator cooled down I read the manual. As recommended I turned off the ice maker which allowed the refrigerator and freezer to cool down faster. I also put the refrigerator on Turbo Cool which had it reasonably cool in two hours. After the two hours we filled the refrigerator and freezer which helped bring the temperature down faster. Once it cooled down we turned off Turbo and turned on ice maker. NOTE: As with all refrigerators and freezers you MUST allow a full 24 hours for the unit to adjust to the correct temperature and for ice to form. I like to allow 72 hours to fully see the temperatures stabilize! In all honesty give the refrigerator up to one full week to fully cool and the temperature to stabilize. You MUST discard the first two gallons of water and two full ice cube storage units. The freezer has ample storage with two pull out drawers. Adjustable partitions make storage more convenient. Very well designed. Because we have a garage freezer I would prefer a small freezer section and a larger refrigerator section. For most people the set up of this refrigerator and freezer would be perfect! Refrigerator storage is far superior to side by side units. Adjustable shelves make storage a huge plus. Only negative is having ice machine in left refrigerator door. Because of the door ice unit you lose valuable door storage. Four valuable storage drawers give you ample room for fruits, vegetables, eggs, butter, etc. Have a large bottle you need to store? One shelf has a space saver feature which allows half the shelf to fold up giving you an area to store a large bottle in. Use caution on the top shelf as these is a cold air duct blowing on that shelf which can freeze some items. On the first refrigerator: Unit comes pre set with refrigerator at 37 degrees and freezer at 0 degrees. I found refrigerator temperature to be very close to accurate varying between 40 and 30 degrees and freezer less than accurate at 5-14 below zero. Remember your temperatures will vary by opening and closing doors repeatedly. I will monitor and adjust as needed. This temperature variation has been a problem with GE for at least the past 10 years! On the second refrigerator: Unit comes pre set with refrigerator at 37 degrees and freezer at 0 degrees. I found refrigerator temperature to be very close to accurate varying between 40 and 30 degrees and freezer also very accurate varying between 5 above and 10 below zero. Remember your temperatures will vary by opening and closing doors repeatedly. Filtered ice and water on door always a nice feature! Also has an auto fill water feature. You can use a turbo cool setting on both refrigerator and freezer which is great for when you come home, with a lot of groceries and keep both doors open for some time while loading and arranging. LED lights in unit work great and don't blind you when you open it up. Has an alarm to warn you doors are open which works great because doors don't close by themselves! I love it because my wife has a tendency to "accidentally" leave doors open! Let's talk is a refrigerator and it will make some noise! You are cooling a large unit and it is frost free. Both of those reasons will have compressor running more often and fans running a lot keeping ice from forming! The noise it not overly offensive and after a few days I hardly noticed the noise. After one week I had to check the refrigerator is still running because 90% of the time it is extremely quiet. Reliability will take some time to determine. My last GE refrigerator ran trouble free for over 9 years. It is still running and I will sell it! You can purchase a three year extended warranty for about $120.00! Just note factory warranty is one year except on water parts which is only 30 days! Extended warranty only covers items where original factory warranty is 90 days or longer! That would leave excluded water parts from extended warranty. Reason for four star vs five star rating: Negatives 1) Temperatures is inaccurate on freezer. 2) Ice maker produces only a few ice cubes each cycle. There is an optional freezer ice maker available. 3) Refrigerator doors do not close on their own. 4) Left refrigerator door requires extra force to close because of French door design. 5) Only 30 day warranty on water parts! 6) Left door sticks out about 1/4" from right door. Positives 1) Ample drawer storage space in both refrigerator and freezer! 2) Sleek design which fits into a tight space very well. 3) Ice and water filtered and available on front door. 4)Turbo cooling feature. 5) Door alarm reminds you the door is left open. 6) Superior water filter which eliminates just about everything. 7) Space saving shelf allows storage of tall bottles. 8) Slate color resists fingerprint stains and will holds magnets on surface.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Big Chill This is an impressive appliance, partly due just to its size. It is really huge and, with the french doors, can accommodate wide platters (three foot heroes, big lasagna trays and the like) without having to tip them at an angle. This review is based on approximately three and a half weeks of use which, while it has not uncovered any "infant mortality" flaws, doesn't permit any long term evaluation..thus the good rather than excellent rating. The interior is well lit (LEDs, which should last a long time) and a variety of shapes and sizes of shelves and drawers will allow for proper storage of any foodstuffs and/or beverages. The water dispenser (with an integral water filter) has an auto-fill feature which is sometimes fooled if your hand is too close to the glass being filled. In the normal manual dispensing mode, the display indicates how many ounces of water have been dispensed. The roll-out freezer drawer (though a little stiff to operate) has a second upper compartment for frequently accessed items so you don't have to dig through ALL of the frozen foods. Once the unit was operated to achieve initial cool-down, the compartment temperatures were maintained at the set points (it would be nice if the display would indicate actual temperatures on a real-time basis). Should you have to open the doors a lot or have added a large quantity of food, "Turbo Cool" and "Turbo Freeze" functions are provided to temporarily increase the cooling effort. The glass shelves are teeter tottering bottles as is the case with wire shelves...and permit containment and easy clean up of spills. The ice maker; (with through the door dispensing) keeps up with a normal need for cubes and the small, rounded half circle ice doesn't have a tendency to jam together in your glass, as do sharp edged cubes. The ice container is easily removed for emptying, without disturbing any of the interior contents of the refrigerator. Either of the french doors can be opened...though the hinged sealing flap on the left door gets quite a mechanical workout and could be a wear point.Ice and water dispensers are inhibited when either door is open. This is a relatively quite machine, though the frequent cycling of the compressor (to minimize energy consumption, no doubt) and the slightly different sound (compared to older compressors) may initially cause some concern. Some minor nits to and finish could be a little better. The sides of the unit have a waviness to them almost like a buckling of the thin outer skin. As noted above, the "auto fill" feature does not always work as intended...and after the first time it overflows, one's confidence level is reduced. When dispensing ice in the "crushed" mode, even with the receiving vessel directly under the discharge chute, some of the ice splatters onto the floor; As noted..the unit has provision for an integral water filter, however the cartridge is not cheap, but is stocked at the local Home Depot. The shrink skin plastic skin applied to protect during shipping is, in some cases very difficult to remove without causing damage to sealing surfaces under which it is secured. I noted that there are some on-line concerns about the longevity of this model, however most of the issues seemed to be with ones sold a year or two ago. So far operation has been as it is supposed to be and the availability of a very inexpensive three year extended maintenance plan leads me to believe that any issues have been resolved. I did notice a significant amount of radio frequency interference (RFI) directly in front of the display, along the upper edge. Finally, this is a BIG appliance. in order to get it into your kitchen (or wherever you're putting it) you need an opening at least 29 and 3/4 inches wide (it IS possible with 29 and 1/2 inches...but it is a lot of work); 30 inches would be better. So make sure you measure carefully before committing (there is a helpful guide on the Home Depot website about measuring for appliances and determining how to best get them into the room they are intended for). Overall I have been pleased with this unit. As noted above, the only reason for the "good" rather than "excellent" ratings are due to the relatively short time it has been in use, which does not allow for long term evaluation.

This is a great refrigerator but it does have a slight hum or high pitch sound. I am assuming it is the ice maker. Speaking of ice maker...go ahead and purchase the extra ice maker for the freezer otherwise the ice maker in the door will only fill up 3 8 oz classes full. There was not a an option to purchase the extra ice maker when I order the refrigerator or I would have ordered it at that time. Very roomy and lots of space for large platters. The automatic fill doesn't exactly work as it should...I have a 2 quart pitcher that I have to repeatedly push the automatic fill feature about 3 times. I believe the sensor is not equipped to really fill anything over 8 oz accurately. Don't get wrong - this is a great refrigerator but it does need a few adjustments to be perfect starting with a larger ice machine but this will also take a way the space in the main compartment - go with the additional ice maker in the freezer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it Have been using the fridge for about two weeks. It's worked well. Very roomy and well organized. Be careful with the dimensions. It's about 1/4" taller and wider than stated, due to some plastic corner guards on each end. Love the autofill, that's a neat feature.
