Does GE require venting for this range?

Asked by: cologuy
Hi cologuy- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing our Café Series! While a vent hood is not required by GE, it is recommended. Vents help to effectively remove smoke, grease, odors and moisture from the room. We encourage you to check local codes for any venting requirements. Thanks for checking with us!

Customer Reviews

5.4 cu. ft. Electric Range with Self-Cleaning Convection Oven in Stainless Steel is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 725.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design 1-Touch screen on front of range is activated unintentionally by the cook standing in front of the range, reaching for the back burners, or cleaning the cooktop; changes existing settings. The keypad can be deactivated but it also shuts off gas to the cooktop so you can't cook. 2- 50 weeks after installation we put cooktop grates inside oven and ran "self clean" function. The oven door automatically locks during self cleaning. When the cleaning cycle was over, the oven door did not unlock. We couldn't use the cooktop or the oven for a week, waiting for service. The only way to access the lock mechanism is to force the oven door open enough to cut the lock rod off. It damaged the door, destroyed the lock, and the stove still "thinks" the door is locked, so we can't turn on the oven. Horrible design. Lastly, GE started 1 warranty at purchase, not installation. At 11 months of light use, GE refused consideration, insisting on purchase date as the start date. No more GE products in this home. GE website will not upload photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vintage Flair! The GE Café Range is one of the most beautiful ranges I have ever seen and I know how the pleasure of cooking with it. I love the knobs in the front of the unit. So much safer then reaching over hot burners. They are vintage looking and quite sturdy! The warming drawer was such an added bonus plus a Cast Iron pan included! My most favorite feature is the lack of a back panel. This one has a very polished, low profile vent, adding to it's character.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from loving my new oven!! I bought this oven when i renovated my kitchen countertops. My old oven was a GE drop-in that came with the house when we bought it 22 years ago. I am thrilled with my new oven; it cooks quickly and evenly. This oven roasts vegetables about 1 hour 15 minutes faster than my old one and they come out with a nice crispy exterior - so tasty!! Dinners are so much quicker now that I am enjoying cooking again!! I love the cast iron griddle and have used it to cook steaks and salmon with excellent results. I haven't used the lower oven drawer yet because i keep forgetting it is there!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous range for real cooks Chosen after months of research for kitchen renovation. Changed from a gas cooktop/electric wall oven to dual-fuel range with NO regrets and got a Warming/Baking drawer without losing cabinet space besides (yes, IT IS A WARMING DRAWER). The main oven is huge inside, but the racks are not as heavy-duty as those in my original GE Profile and bow under excessive weight (cast-iron dutch oven full of stew), the convection oven baked multiple racks of cookies with no problem, and the "Probe" feature makes cooking roasts foolproof. The stove burners are amazing: the front 20K BTU burner boils water in minutes and then turns down to allow a wine reduction over hours (it can be a little twitchy at times...), the front 17K BTU burner can boil the spaghetti while you saute Aglio e Olio on the tri-burner - nice! On the down side, the stainless does not clean up well and is easily scratched when moving the grates, and the knobs don't click off and can be turned without pushing them in.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mostly pleased A great looking stove with many excellent features, lock system, element sizes that fit all my pots, baking oven drawer is very handy. On the down side, the convection oven does not bake uniformly. When baking 3 pans of buns, the buns on the top rack have a burned top, the middle rack is great, and the bottom rack is under baked. This is the fourth convection oven I have owned and the only one that is unreliable when using convection bake. It has taken quite a while to have the bake and roast controls accept a variety of temperature settings on the first try.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Difficult to Install I wrote a long review but it was rejected, so don't trust the reviews as the unfavorable reviews don't meet the 'GE' guidelines. I looked into 'GE', but this range is actually not a General Electric product, but a range built by Haier, a Chinese company that purchased GE appliances in January 2016. This range is not a slide in range, but a drop in that has a low back to look like a slide in range. A slide in range requires a 29" opening in the granite countertop. This unit needs a minimum of 30". Correcting the granite cost $450. Make sure your outlet is 40 amp, and very low on the left side of the wall or your unit will not reach the back wall. The gas line also needs to be on the left side. Correcting the electrical cost an additional $200. The range is nice and works well, but if you want to save money, buy a drop in with a gas oven.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from GE Cafe Range Problems with Convection Roast Featu I bought this range in December 2016. It's now February 2017, I have had 5 service appointments and the problem with the convection oven is still fixed. The service man claims it's a design issue and that no GE Café Ranges work in the Convection Roast mode.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeded expectations This oven was bought to replace an old Kitchenaid Steam Assist oven that broke down during our kitchen renovation. It was certainly much more affordable than the Kitchenaid. I was worried that performance might suffer but the Convection settings seem to do at least as good a job as my old oven and when I measured with an oven thermometer, the temperature distribution was much more even with the GE. My only complaint is that, although the range body is perfectly level, the cooking grates seem to be slightly tilted forward causing oil to pool slightly at the front of my pans. Definitely worth the cost though.
