It made a knocking sound and the water stopped flowing. Could filters have clogged that much? Any troubleshooting ideas? It has worked fine in the past other than the light that never comes on.

My problem is exactly the same as Brian who asked the question April 23, 2012. I had a plumber in to
fix another problem and his diagnosis is that the head of the unit that the filters screw into is blocked up.Home Depot is out of this unit and does not carry the filters in any of their stores. Did GE stop manufacturing this unit because of problems?

@Trmmrusr: I had a filter that was NOT flowing (flow stopped on the GSLX55R GE dual cartridge.) Your solution indicated the problem and a possible solution. I used a TINY strip of DUCT Tape pierced through with a TOOTHPICK, to keep the little tab more upright, so that the CAM could PUSH IT IN and allow the flow. It worked. Water is now flowing. PACO

Answer:
In my system, the cause was the plastic cams on the filter no longer pushing in the plastic valve in the housing to allow flow. A temporary solution is to pinch up the cams on the filter with pliers to make them stick up a little higher. It's just a poor design. See photo.

Hello Brian,
Thank you for your inquiry on the GE Dual Stage Lead Filtration System model # GXSL55R.
Yes, there could be high levels of sediment. I would also suggest to check the shut off valve and maker sure the filter canisters are fully installed.
If the indicator light is not working, the battery may need to be replaced.
I hope this helps!

Answer:
Kasha do you have link to that fitting you used? The one that does come with it is for 1/2 and it has been a few trips to Home Depot with not much luck getting something. Why it doesn't ship with 3/8 is beyond frustrating. The comment about having a plumber install is ridiculous given the cost of labor vs the cost of the filter system.

Hello,
Thank you for your question on the GE Dual Stage Lead Filtration System Model # GXSL55R.
The water supply fitting uses a 1/4" tubing. If they are wanting to use 3/8" or 1/2" they would want to consult a plumber.
I hope this helps!

Answer:
I don't remember, but do recall the plastic adapter that came with the filter was not well made and could not be used. I bought a fitting that worked well for a few bucks and that solved the problem. That said, we have been happy with the performance of the filter. We had one in our last house and it also worked quite well.

It is just a timer, so it is six months, better than nothing and any other type of monitoring would probably be kind of expensive.

Answer:
The light comes on 6 months after the battery is installed. It doesn't know how much water passed through the filter. If the filter gets loaded with solids before then (i.e. sediment in water), the flow will be reduced. If it is unacceptably low you need to change the filter cartridges.

Customer Reviews

Dual Stage Lead Filtration System is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay, but not the best design I installed this about 2 years ago. It filters well and has not leaked. However, we have to replace the entire unit now because it no longer passes water through. With the second set of filters we started getting reduced/no flow and it would make loud hammering noises. Turns out the little plastic cams on the filters that push the plastic valve in the housing in to open the flow are not tall/robust enough (see picture). Temporary solution is to pinch them up with pliers, but eventually they wear again and water stops flowing before the filter should be replaced. Now there is something wrong with the plastic valves in the housing (see other picture), so no matter what, it won't open enough to flow. Still, it's not too bad a value if it lasts two years. They should sell just the housing separately, or make the valves and cams out of metal, then it would be a better value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Faucet, weak filter housing I have used this happily for years, upgrade filters are available and make this a great value! After 4 or 5 filter replacements the tabs wore down and it would not give water. I drilled out the check valve (the X shaped part in the second picture) and it works great. I do have to shut off the water to change the cartridge, but I didn't even know it had a check valve until it broke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works quite well for the price. the filter took water that smelled like swamp water that had a cup of bleach in it and gave it no detectable odor at all. What it does not do is remove the slightly bitter taste of manganese from my rather hard water supply. I did not expect that it would, but I thought that it is worth noting. to remove disolved mineral taste, a reverse osmosis filter would be needed. it should be noted that the filter replacement indicator is a simple 6 month timer. it does not activly monitor the health of the filter in any way. not that anyone reasonably would expect a feature like that in a product like this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Unit with a Fatal Flaw As was highlighted in the review "Okay, but not the best design", the biggest problem with this unit is the spring valves. If you have a bad valve, it causes a horrible hammering sound as the valve vibrates when the faucet is on. After reading that review, I fiddled with the valve on the inlet side and got it freed up enough to where the hammering went away... for now. In the end, I'll probably end up drilling that valve out. The hard part will be keeping the plastic shavings out of the housing so I hope my temporary fix lasts for a bit. Other than that, the unit is great! No leaks, easily replaced filters and the water tastes clean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a great water filter! This water filter is wonderful. I cannot imagine why any of you have had issues with... leaking??? I had my plumber put it in about 3 years ago and it works like a charm. It has a nice strong stream and the cartridges are VERY easily replaced, compared to the previous type of filter I had. NO SMALL THING for someone with bad arthritis in the hands! I really researched for my needs and this one more than met it. If I have any complaint, it is that you don't list the ID number for the replacement cartridge, so I have to go fish it out of my paperwork... but that's quite minor!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this filter, doesn't leak if installed correctly i love this filter. It was easy to install, and as long as you get the tubing completely squared off when you cut it, and get it pushed up all the way in, it doesnt leak at all. I've had it for 6 months and have had no problems. I give it 4 stars only because the faucet part wiggled a little. But it has never bothered me or caused a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product I am surprised at the previous reviews. I and my sibling have these at our houses and have *never* had a leaking issue. We have both had them for a handful of years now. The install was easy-(and I'm just a girl!...lol) and the performance has been wonderful. The filters are a snap to pop in, 1/4 turn and done. We have high chlorine in our area and it filters it out beautifully. My sibling is on the other coast and has very high water pressure and it has not been an issue and also loves the clean water it provides. Can not believe the savings over lugging home gallons of water from the store. The water wand swivels as well for filling a pot on the counter in the kitchen or just moving it to access the sink better. I also have it upstairs in the master bath for access to clean drinking water up there. I love this product and am amazed that others had such issues.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't buy this if you want something that will last As others have experienced, I've had to replace this product due to the plastic tabs wearing down and closing off the valves. This does not bode well for any quick change filter product from GE. I refuse to purchase or recommend such a product. I reused the faucet and tubing with the replacement by using some quick connects from the fittings section. Good riddance to this bad rubbish.
