So I just recently purchased a hud home and the entire plumbing was galvanized steel. After replacing the entire plumbing system (PEX now) and seeing the amount of gunk built up in the old water heater. I decided it was time to install a whole home water filter as I also assumed the main water line coming from the street was also galvanized.
I've seen noticeable effects in this filter with the no color of the toilet bowl, minimal water deposits on faucets and shower heads and super clean dishes.
I've attached a picture showing the difference between a new and old filter. The old one must have weighed 6x more than the new one.
I was also unfortunate enough to install the filter pre-water spicket.

I was having problems with city water. Ocassionaly the water for discolor. Called the city they said its because I have galvanized pipes I said no I don't but they think they know my house better then me. I put in the filter and after a couple of days of using water started noticing it a huge difference in water quality. No funky smell, no spots on dishes anymore and can drink water straight from tap and tastes amazing. I highly recommend this product to everyone. The filter is a bit pricey but it's your health.

I purchased the filter and housing because I could tell there was sediment in our city water.
The first month we had it, both my wife and I noticed the change in shower water, no chlorine. This is a really good thing, our health is important. Within 2 1/2 months I noticed the filter getting a very dark color and I changed the filter. All was well. But get this, this is the part you don't want to miss. The 2nd filter was installed and after only 3 weeks it was almost black and you could tell it was restricting our water pressure. . i thought that I had received a bad filter. Low and behold a few days later I found out that the city had worked on the water lines. You guessed it, all of that gunk would have been in our house, hot water heater and showers. . Thank the Lord for that filter. . .
You also will assume I change this baby regularly. . . yep and without complaining.
One final note. . please look at the photo. It shows the filter getting dirty. I took it this way to show that it works. Sure I could have taken it with a brand new white one. . but. . that is not the point. . And. . yes a big "and". . . this is city water. . hmmmm.

I replace the house filter every 90 days. I had renters in the same house previously who didn't. Bad news for me as I had to clean up the second order effects (clogged outlets, ruined dishwasher, broken ice maker, and toilets filled with all kinds of crud / lime).
Bottom Line: This thing works. Easy to swap out. Price is a bit more expensive than I expected but it is better than replacing all my other components. Replacing this is a little thing that is easy to do but easy to forget. REPLACE EVERY 3-5 months latest. City water is brutal and replacing this filter makes the other items in your house last longer.
If you wait for a year, the filter will melt down in the water canister (that is what happened with the renters).
