our cat has been peeing on area rugs at night. the vet informed us that it might be he can't see well at night. we started leaving the overhead lights on where we keep his box and now we would like a small light for our cat to see when he's using the box to save on electricity.

Answer:
At first I placed it on the counter in the bathroom, but it was too high up to sense the cats. So I hung it on the door knob and it's perfect. You could keep it on the floor too, but personally my cats would play with it.

Yes, they will trigger the sensor, just make sure the light is at 4' or lower. We put ours up high to avoid the animals triggering them.

Answer:
This is easy, if light you want get a few GE LED Motion-Activated Porta-Light they are battery operated and if you set them up around that house the cat will trigger off the sensor anywhere he walks.
Also maybe you should pick the area rug up and put it in a closet or somewhere out of sight from the cat and see what happens.

A regular night light consumes very little energy, and will be constantly on, assuring the cat will find the litter box every time.
In addition you will need to deodorize the rugs as the cat will detect the scent of urine and return to those spots over and over again.

Answer:
The wattage of this light is 0.09 watts. It cannot detect a person approaching a door if it is placed behind the door. The motion sensor is on the front of the product and will need to be orientated in the direction of the person approaching. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 50/50 performance just out of warranty Bought two of these in December. One no longer works at all. The other has been problematic, only working sporadically but is currently working. I can see why HD has now discontinued them. Never were really bright enough anyway. April 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for Dark Hallway We needed this for my elderly mother so she can see the hallway when getting up in the middle of the night. It's the right amount of light for a nightlight without being too bright. I like the hook which we use on a closet door and no installation is required. It's also great that it has an off switch so it doesn't have to go on and off all day when you don't need it - just turn it to "auto" at bed time and it's good to go. I put rechargable batteries in so I'll see how that works out. July 10, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by it's ok,, but the pictures are misleading Ok the unit is.. on a scale of 1 to 10 a (3) for brightness. As led's go,(which they are usually bright) this unit is very dim.I understand they wish to conserve battery power but use a 9v with step down voltage & add some led's & also, make (2) covers clear for those who need light & white to diffuse the light. Also, in the picture on your site, you make the clip on look as there is some metal in it when the one I got was all black plastic. as for the sensor, that I give a score of 10! BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE UP FOR THE DIM LIGHTING AS A REGULAR NIGHTLITE IS WAY BRIGHTER! The sensor works very well no issues there. the ONLY other thing I would suggest for upgrading "might" be a magnetic back for those who needs another option for mounting November 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good solution. Now when I walk into the bathroom at night I have a nice soft light and no having to find the switch. September 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent motion activated night light The motion sensor works well to turn on the light and the light output is sufficient for night access. The light sensor usually prevents activation if the room is well light however if it activates it will not turn off immediately if other lighting is turned on when the light is activated. That's not a big deal but might shorten battery life a little unnecessarily. June 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great safety light especially for elderly first purchased on for myself for dark hallway at night and found it to be excellent since then have purchased 5 additional ones for elderly relatives who need a safety light but not all the time. When light is in motion sensor it stays on long enough that you don't have a fear of it going out before you get to your destination. The light is very bright and has a good range. It has 3 modes motion sensor mode, stays on like a flashlight and has an off position. Very convenient can be attached to a wall or comes with a hander that lets you hang it on a door knob. Best thing I have ever found. Would recommend it to anyone. September 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Product This is just what I needed. I needed a nightlight for the bathroom for the cats (no windows in the bathroom) and this was perfect. I am saving on electricity and batteries since it is motion activated and only lights up when someone enters the room. It also has a setting to keep the light on should you choose. You can hang it on a doorknob (it comes with a hook) or place it on a table. I plan to purchase more for the rest of the house in the future. Also, my local Home Depot didn't actually carry it, but I ordered it online and was able to pick it up at the store. Pretty cool. September 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely functional and reliable so far. I have bought five of them. They give off sufficient amount of light for you to walk around. I have one in each room. They work exactly as they are described. I like them because they don't turn on if there is another light source as they are photo-sensed. I've used them for six weeks. They've been very reliable. They are well-made. I'm glad I purchased them. November 28, 2014
