Customer Questions & Answers

What is this converting? Is it converting a 100 Ampt panel to a 200 Amp panel

I have a new 100 AMP panel but am converting to 200 AMP service. Can this 100 AMP panel be converted to 200 AMP or is a new panel needed?
Asked by: Fasia
Consult National Electrical Code (NEC) and local code requirements (most all "local requirements" for electrical work call for "getting a permit" and follow-up inspection). Having said that, if you are replacing a 100 AMP service with 200 AMP service, this will usually call for replacement of the whole breaker box or load center as they are called. Although it "seems OK" to just rip out the bus bars inside the frame of the metal breaker box and replace with another, it's usually not allowed by codes (standards have to be kept for all our safety, it can't be allowed that ANYONE interchange parts in load centers all willy-nilly). The innerds of load centers are specifically designed and manufactured by different makers (like GE, Square D, Siemens, Eaton/Cutler Hammer, etc) to meet certain standards and requirements (Underwriter's Laboratories testing, etc.) and, in general should not be interchanged. Also, if you buy a GE, load center, stick to GE breakers. Going from 100 AMP service to 200 AMP service may alter your existing circuit wire load (energy carrying capacity of wires) so different thickness (like maybe 8 guage to 4 or 2 guage wires) may be required so that the wires carrying currents do not over-heat and a fire starts. The "quick" answer to the question is that this breaker "converts" a box with bus bar for branch circuits to a box with a main switch to feed the bus bars that will feed the branch circuits. In other words, this 200 AMP main breaker will allow you (with just one "switch") to power down the whole box. In conclusion, to convert 100 AMP service to 200 AMP service will require a new breaker box (200AMP rated load center) and the wires coming from your electric meter may have to be swapped out to thicker wires. Be Safe. Consult an electrician.

The service for my house is a GE unit that has the meter base on top and a panel with spaces for 6 double pole breakers below it. This is all one unit

The bus bars run verticle from the secondary side of the meter to the bottom on the panel unit. I can not fide a modle # on this unit, only tag says rated for 200 Amps. I want to install a new 200 amp panel inside my garage just behind this described outside panel. My question is will this item fit in my panel to allow for me to feed my new panel?
Asked by: Anonymous
Bobby I'm the one that ask the question, I have the answer now, here is what I had to do. I eventually had to take all of the componets below the secondary side of the meter of the existing panel. The outside 'clips' that held the existing double pole breakers woulld not allow the new breaker to be installed, then the bus bar sections that held the same breakers would not allow the new one to be installed, the 'guts' broke while trying to get these out The only solution was to take all of the 'guts' out, cut the existing bus bars to fit on the bus bars of the new breaker. I drilled 1/4" holes in the existing bus bars, tapped them and used 1/4" X 20 X 3/4" silicon bronze bolts, flat, and to be sure lock nuts. I inserted them with the head of the bolt on the inside facing out then taped them and the entire exposed sections of both bus bars with 2 layers 1/2 lapped each, Scotch 130, 33, and final wrap of 70 tape. I know this is more insulation than would be requred however I felt better doing it this way. FOR SAFETY I PULLED THE METER PRIOR TO DOING ANY OF THIS WORK. This breaker is identical to the one in the 200 amp GE panel that I bought for inside the house, not sure why it is called a conversion kit, had I know this prior to purchasing my panel I could have bought a panel without the main in it. No big deal my equipment is now double protected. The only other way to do this job would have been take an outage from the power company, install a new meter pan then go from the meter pan to inside the panel inside the house. I chose to do it this way to avoild having to miss 1 or maybe 2 days work depending on when the power company could come back to reenergize. This complete job, work described above and changing out the panel inside took me about 4 hours and I would not recommend anyone trying this that does not have Electrical experience and training. Thanks, Bobby

PowerMark Gold 200 Amp Double Pole Main Circuit Breaker Conversion Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very important!! Read this to save $ The breaker was the correct one. It was delivered on time. Just figure out if you have the right door on your panel before buying it.They have changed the configuration of the breaker for horizon to vertical. I had a mod 1 door and had to buy a whole new panel ($160) just to get the mod 6 door. GE sys the door is available but it really isn't, it actually cost more than the whole panel and you have to wait forever to get it. In the end it was a cheaper/easier way out to go about it the way i did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GE 200 AMP Conversion kit as advertised This 200 AMP main breaker conversion kit for the GE Powermark Gold TLM (PGTLM) series Load Centers is a convenient kit for adapting a GE PGTLM box to be able to "power down" or turn off power from the meter main electric feed to the panel branch circuits. The breaker (4 x 50 amp breakers "fused" to create a 200 AMP single throw switch/breaker) clips in AND screws into the main bus bar assembly in the breaker box or load center. Great price and easy install. Turn power off/consult an electrician if you are clumsy and may be prone to fatal shocks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It was just what I needed. I had to cut my panel cover to fit in in place. That was a bummer. I was glad to find it at all, and home depot had a good price on it.
