Looking for a recommendation on a built into the cabinets convection microwave and ducting advise

This question is from Profile 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Convection Microwave in Stainless Steel-DISCONTINUED

Hello, I would like to replace my current air recirculating over the range microwave to make room for a dedicated range hood vented to the outside; but then install a convection microwave into my cabinets; but also have the microwave vented to the outside as well instead of recirculating the exhaust fumes/smoke back into my kitchen. Provided the blower on the microwave is 400 CFMs of less, my County's Building Department has no code requirements or guidelines. Because the over the counter cabinet I would like to use as the location for the new microwave is hung against a brick wall/chimney area, I'll need the ducting to initially be directly over the top of the microwave with the duct initially routed horizontally for two feet to an area where I can then run the duct vent vertically up to the roof. A model that has roughly the same dimensions as the GE Profile will be able to fit in the space I have available. So, do you have a recommended GE Convection Microwave model that will meet my needs and if so, what type of ducting (shape, size# should be installed? Since I have that two foot length of ducting that needs to run horizontally initially #and I do have the leeway to have it run at a slight angle), is there any considerations I need to take in account for ensuring that I can clean-out any grease accumulations?

We purchase this unit 3 to 4 years ago. It was manufactured in Nov 2011. It makes a humming noise constantly as soon as the door is closed even when the microwave or convection is not being used. We plug it in and the microwave or convection oven works fine. Once done it will not stop humming until the door is opened or the unit is unplugged.

Answer:
Hi Richard-this is Sue from GE Appliances. A humming noise when the microwave is not in operation may be the transformer. It emits a slight humming sound that is usually not noticed. The transformer is used to power the clock. If this is not the case, we encourage you to contact GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737 for assistance or visit GEAppliances.com. Replacement of GE Over-the-Range Microwave

I have a GE Profile Over-the-Range Microwave/Convection oven (Model JVM290WV 001) that was installed about 18 years ago and has gone bad. Ideally I'd replace it with the same model number, but I can't seem to find that model. So what are some options to replace it. The key is that the width of the new unit must be exactly the same as the width of the old unit (30 inches) to fit my cabinetry. The other 2 dimensions are not so critical.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 121 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Need to take the time to read the instruction manual I am happy with the versatility of this convection microwave and having a small oven in one appliance. It will save energy by not having to light up the big oven for just one item. Due to the many features, the instruction manual had to be kept handy and read several times. ( I would not get this appliance for my Mother who is not technically minded.) Installers arrived late and struggled to install due to exhaustion, inexperience and training. I was at the end of their 12 hr. day and they had two more deliveries after me! October 22, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Highly Recomended This appliance does exactly what it is supposed to do and does it well. The controls are push button /twist nob and after getting used to it, I prefer the nob to the full push button that most of these have. Home Depot installed it, the workers earned a good tip for clean, efficient work and I couldn't be happier about the whole transaction. I gave it 5 stars on everything though I have no idea how much electric the appliance uses but I didn't want to downgrade my recommendation so I "shot the works" on the electrical usage. HIGHLY RECOMENDED from start to finish and I have had this for about 3 weeks and use it multiple times daily. November 9, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value, convection oven below average, controls clumsy The GE Profile 1790 is a fine value, but the convection oven is a bit disappointing. The unit is attractive, capacious, and has a really powerful microwave oven. The recirculating vent with the charcoal filter does a good job of removing odors. My wife has baked some decent brownies in the oven section, but attempts at producing crisp oven fries were failures. The controls are versatile, but clumsy: a dial must be turned to enter time for time cooking, and then only in 15 second increments. We are happy that we have a second oven that seems to bake OK; we entertain a lot and often need two different temperature settings. But don't think of the oven as being a full time substitute for a real one. November 20, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great looking and it works! This is a great MW oven. If you have a vent it will connect to it or it can be installed to vent in your kitchen. We were a little apprehensive about using the dial instead of number pad, but we quickly learned and appreciate its use now. Without a number pad it makes room for all the other features of this multifaceted oven. It will work like a regular oven! Using the shelves you can keep warm several dishes while you finish prepping the rest of your meal. Or you can bake just like your regular oven. Convection too! Whatever you want to do in the kitchen, you can use this oven to do it. It is the perfect companion to your stove below. November 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very impressed! Just had this microwave installed by Home Depot the other day...not only is this microwave/convection oven impressive it cooks great! At the salesmans recommendation ,we chose this model! Living in Florida it is too hot to heat up a conventional oven! Well so far we have not used the conventional oven ever again because this microwave does it all! The food is crispy and moist and delicious! The delivery from Home Depot and installation went smoothly and proficiently! The delivery men were professional and very knowledgeable! Very Happy with home Depot and this is our 3rd appliance purchase from them! We would not go anywhere else! Thanks to Jack,Richard,Kimmy and Brandi at the store ! You are terrific!!!!!! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great microwave with many features The Pros: This is a wonderful microwave with many features - I won't go into detail here because I'm sure there are plenty of positive reviews. The Cons: - This was a replacement for a previous GE microwave. It did not fit into any of the previous holes or brackets. Installation was easy, but would have been easier if it fit the previous bracket. - The clock is far too dim. - This is used over-the-range with a recirculating fan - I have not been able to find the proper filter. Even the ones that are supposed to fit, do not. Frustrating. January 14, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great microwave/convection oven so far We have used this as a microwave and convection oven for the past month. It works great as a microwave, easy to use, heats food like any other microwave does. We have actually used the convection part of this appliance also to bake a chicken (made it nice and golden brown), potatoes (worked perfect) and a few other things and they all turned out great! Not having number buttons takes a bit of getting used to, it's a dial instead and it only goes in 15 second increments, that is really the only negative we've observed so far. January 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product I am very pleased with the microwave, but especially with the convection. My results have been very successful and baked goods turn out perfectly. I am still experimenting with roasting October 15, 2013
