Customer Reviews

Profile 2.1 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave in White with Sensor Cooking is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best over-the-range Microwave we have owned The overall quality of this microwave simply cannot be beat. There is nothing flimsy about it, and it and its connection to our outside vent is much better than its predecessor, a comparable microwave made by another vendor. For example, with our previous model, when there were high winds, we constantly heard the vent door banging outside. Now, we rarely hear it banging in the wind, and when we do, it is very faint. In addition, it has four fan speeds up to 400 CFM (or more, with a Boost speed). Beyond that, it runs quietly and cooks food extremely evenly, and even more quickly than a smaller microwave we own with more power (1100W vs. this one's 1000W). So, there is something very efficient about the design of this microwave compared to others. The selection dial and just a few program buttons instead of digit buttons and many quick program buttons is a distinguishing feature of this and similar GE models. Some have felt this arrangement slows them down. However, when you get used to it, you can definitely start the microwave faster for many purposes. For example, for timed options, such as Cook by Time, you can zip through a selection of times from 15 seconds to 99 minutes much faster than using digit buttons. The timed options also include a number of selections you can choose with the Cooking Menu button that allow you to cook not only by time, but by some food types and weight, which does not always match your need. For example, one of the more common ones I use is the Beverage type, but it only allows a single choice of 8 oz. sizes, where as I often reheat 16 oz. beverages, like coffee. Fortunately, it allows you to edit the default timing of all these options to account for larger or smaller portions, but you have to experiment to get what you want. You can also immediately start 30 seconds of high-power cooking or add 30 seconds of time to any other cooking selection using a single button. The sensor options have numerous choices for common foods and portions using humidity to sense the result. Though, again, these might not have everything you might want in a sensor situation, such as combinations of different types of food on a plate, or different quantities than the options provided. You can sometimes identify a similar sensor option that is close to what you want and it sometimes works. There is a single button that provides many Defrost options, one of the largest selections I have seen. Equally impressive is the availability off several Soften and Melt options, which are available using both the Cooking Menu and Defrost buttons. Finally, a Steam button provides quick selections for steaming certain pre-programmed foods, which is designed specifically for the NordicWare Rice Cooker/Steamer Bowl. The existing selections might not work quite as well for other microwave steamer bowls you can use. Other high points include options for changing the sound level of beeps, which is actually a big plus compared to many other microwaves that force you to endure either very loud beeps or none at all. The lighting options are very useful, both over the range and for looking inside the oven. And the interior is a truly ease-to-clean baked enamel that seems to never require more than a wet sponge. One of the negatives is the user manual, which is small and incomplete. It does cover most operational features, but some important details are completely missing. For example, you really have no clue that Beverages is available from the Cook Menu button and not one of the sensor buttons. So, you really need to go through all the selections for each button to identify everything you can do with this microwave. Ultimately, the best thing about this microwave is that it is a solid and consistent performer, which I have been using for several months without a hint of a problem. One caveat is that GE Appliances was recently bought out by another company, which is the ultimate maker of the last not so good over-the-range microwave that we owned. It is a big question whether this will cheapen the GE brand, which has traditionally been one of the best in the business. However as of this writing, it is likely that most GE models currently available, including this one, have been made with GE's traditional high quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid and Quiet The microwave is noticeably quieter than the 8 yr old higher end GE unit it replaced. The exhaust fan is much quieter yet seems to be more powerful. Even the microwave cooking is quieter. The knob controller works fine but much of the time we are able to use one of the dedicated buttons instead which saves time. I installed it myself and was able to use the existing GE mounting plate from the prior GE unit. The screw locations on top moved but drilling holes in the cabinet wasn't difficult. The template didn't work all that well to locate the holes and I had to extend the holes on top to get them to line up right. I recommend having a strong (or at least non-weak) helper when mounting it so you can be more gentle handling it..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consumer Reports Highly Rated Have been using just over a week. We purchased based upon Consumer Reports rating and customer reviews. Really like the multi-speed fan as I do quite a bit of stove-top cooking. Still testing settings - it has some sensor cooking options. Defrosted buns last night and stopped before the preset time expired. Installation went well because others had posted in detail what worked for them. Husband used a laser level and tape measure instead of taping up the paper template. His top holes were spot on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The jury is still out on this one I would recommend this microwave, only by first telling you that it's kind of a pain to just quickly cook or heat up something. It requires 5 or so steps.(unless you want to hit the *add 30 seconds* button 10 times) I just replaced a 5 yr old profile that we LOVED, literally to death. I have 4 kids so it was in constant use. The touch pad went bad, which I suspect is why GE re designed their new profile to be less touch pad and more knob. The knob just looks really old school to me, and I miss just throwing the food in and hitting the number of minutes I wanted to cook. That said, it's the right size, it seems to have a lot of features, though I have to add I just don't think it's as sleek or good looking as my last profile. However, Consumer Reports rated it the best, so here we are. Will follow up with review on how it holds up,,,down the road.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement This unit replaced one that had been in place for over 10 years. This is the top rated unit in CR. Once we got used to the different features, it is easy to use and does a good job. We had HD install it. Worth the time and cost.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from GE products are becoming inferior Microwave is very loud when heating and not brightly lit inside. Door is light but feels like it is going to fall off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features & flawless performance This unit has a lot of features to like and is easy to use once I became accustomed to using the COOKING MENU button and the dial to select the desired time and power level. The fan has four speeds to choose from. Very easy to use and clean. Very happy with the overall performance. The only thing lacking is the ability to program cooking time for a given number of seconds (for example 10, 20, 45) -- can select 15 or 30 seconds or in minutes. Very quiet operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good selection I found on this microwave a power saver feature. Considering the cost of running a microwave I use this feature all the time. The microwave goes black after 2 or 3 minutes and comes on again when you open the door.
