Hi mike- This is Sue at GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest! The middle piece is a downdraft vent and not a grill for foods. The powerful downdraft exhaust system effectively pulls smoke and steam out of the kitchen. Thanks for checking with us!

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 58 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Overall I do like cooktop but I must note that it is a little difficult to keep clean. The glass cooktop surface really shows every tiny bit of food, spill, drip etc. and you cant just clean the spot you end up having to take off both grills, knobs etc & fully clean whole entire cooktop-especially since it doesnt have the recessed individual burners. Also since I did not see this model in person before I bought it I was a little suprised at how high profile the burner grills are (they are about 2 full inches high off the countertop) so at first I wasn't sure that I liked it but now the look has grown on me & it looks nice, modern & complementary to my kitchen. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great downvent gas cooktop The stainless steel trim provides an extra bit of protection along the glass edge, it also make the cooktop look nice. The vent is really strong, even on low, the gas flames from the burners are pulled toward the vent! The metal lip underneath the glass that makes up the gas range is not very wide, so you have to have nearly an exact cutout in your countertop or else you risk supporting the weight of your cooktop with the glass surface, which could cause it to crack. Installation was fairly straightforward, I did it myself but I was just replacing an old gas cooktop with downvent of roughly the same size. I only needed to run out to Home Depot once to get a 6" round to 3.25"x10" vent adapter to connect the fan to my existing vent. I already had a pipe wrench, gas pipe sealer and the all the other tools required for the install. I had to make more room inside my cabinet for the vent stack and fan (it was larger than my previous cooktop) which involved me using my circular saw. The entire installation process probably took me about 4 hours, but I took my time carefully reading over the instructions and making sure things dry fit in place properly before I secured them. In the end, I have a great looking cooktop that is super easy to clean. December 6, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Satisfied We switched from an electric cooktop to this gas one and have been very happy with it! We wanted to keep the down draft vent that we had and this model did that! I love the easy cleanup of the glass top, too! April 9, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WORST COOKTOP I'VE EVER HAD I'm very fussy about keeping my appliances spotless. This cooktop has 15 removable pieces that I remove to clean all the time. Also, the two grates are removable. I don't see how anybody could think this is easy to clean. And try to keep the glass top looking good. No cleaner gets all the spots off. I finally used Barkeeper liquid. I found that cleans the best. The grates are so high up in the air, you have to have the flame on high to get anything to cook. Also, when the fan in on, the flames are pulled toward it. As far as I'm concerned, it's a piece of junk. We are having a new cooktop installed today. Both my husband and I hate this cooktop. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love it. Really love this cooktop. Looks wonderful and clean up is easy. May 26, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good stove As mentioned in other reviews it sits high but the smooth surface is easy to clean. There is some yellow flame and no way to adjust it. Hopefully the air will eventually purge itself. Overall a good stove and definitely beats electric. July 9, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Product very good. No install instruction came in he box I liked the product but was difficult to install because no instructions were included. October 9, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decent replacement for GE Profile Electric Cooktop This cooktop fit well as a replacement to an existing GE Profile electric cooktop. We had a service provider run the gas line and complete the installation. The front of the unit does have a slight curve, but it does not show any space where the previous electric cooktop sat. The concerns mentioned elsewhere about the flames being pulled into the downdraft are legitimate, but we haven't seen a huge problem with this so far. The one issue we do have is that the rack above the flames don't appear to be level. Pots and pans are not sturdy on the rack - it is like the prongs themselves are not flush with each other. Not sure if this is has a design purpose, but it doesn't feel like the pots and pans are 100% secure above the flames. They wobble on the rack. Otherwise the product seems fine so far.
