Pros: Easy to clean, heats up the pans fast. Food doesn't cook onto the surface, since that is not what's getting hot (the pan does). Reacts quickly, almost like gas. Even heating Cons: You'll need a 50 amp circuit for the 36" You may need to buy new pans (they have to be induction compatible). If a magnet will stick to the base of your pans, they should work. Cast iron will work as well. Aluminum will not. More expensive than an electric cooktop (but worth it).

What is the smallest size pot I can use?

How much of the circle does the pan have to fit inorder for the burner to turnon?
Asked by: newbie2induction
You would have problems if your pan was bigger than the burner, but not smaller. See pic attached. The small pan works great on the larger burner and only the area where the pan sits, gets hot.

GE Profile Induction Cooktop Installation

I am considering the 36" GE Profile induction cooktop to replace an existing non-induction electric cooktop. Is this a DIY installation for a fairly experienced DIYer? Can I find installation instructions anywhere before buying to understand what's involved? Thanks.
Asked by: Anonymous
It's pretty easy if you already have a hard wired cooktop that you're replacing, as long as the circuit is big enough. It doesn't plug in. It's wired directly to the wires of your home. Turn your power off to your existing cooktop, undo the wiring on the current cooktop, patch in this cooktops wiring and then turn it back on. For the 36", you'll need a 50 amp circuit. If you don't have a 50 amp circuit or currently use a hard-wired cooktop, you'll need to have an electrician run the wires for you.

What hood & blower do you recommend for the induction cooktop?

Asked by: Anonymous
Hi COOKTOP, I’m BlakeTheDiyGuy from Home Depot’s online community. There are a few great hoods that are also from the GE Profile suite that would coordinate perfectly with this induction cooktop giving you a designer look. The first is a wall mounted chimney unit, with 450 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) venting capacity. This unit requires that there be no wall cabinet mounted above your cooktop. This next hood is similar to the last one, only it is designed for a hood installed in an island where wall mounting is not an option. Also 450 CFM If you are looking for a professional-kitchen look then you may want to look at this GE Profile hood which features professional looks AND performance with a powerful 590 CFM blower. Or if a more subtle look is what you are after, then the slide out vent may be just what you are looking for. Most of the unit is hidden inside your wall cabinet, providing cleaner lines. This uses a less powerful 320 CFM blower. I hope this helps you find the right hood for you, they would all look and perform great with that new induction top! -Blake

Profile 36 in. Glass Ceramic Electric Induction Cooktop in Black with 5 Elements is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 102.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome cooktop My wife hates electric cooktops. She loves this cooktop. She loves the even cooking when frying. It cleans up easily since any food that spills doesn't get cooked onto the surface. The surface will get hot as the pan will transfer heat back onto the cooktop but it's nowhere near as hot as an electric cooktop. You do have to buy compatible cookware so keep that in mind if you're buying it. Aluminum won't work. If you can stick a magnet to the base, it should work. We bought some compatible pots and pans from Ross and Ikea so they don't have to be expensive. Some cheaper pans will emit a mild hum (sounds like the quiet hum from a florescent light fixture). It's not loud though. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't read about it first. Cast Iron will work as well. We did some tests with it. After putting a pan on the cooktop and turning it on, I could feel heat emanating from the pan in about 10 seconds. We were able to bring a 3 qt sauce pan filled with water to a full boil in about 3 minutes and a 16 qt stock pot to a full boil in about 13 minutes. If you're buying the 36", they require a 50 amp circuit so make sure you're wired for that. The 30" requires a 40 amp circuit. The instructions for hooking it up were clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice unit. Easy to install and use. Very happy with safety features. I purchased this unit as a replacement for a GE Profile five burner cook top. The old cook top was radient heat and stayed hot after use. The induction cook top cools much faster and is much safer to use with younger children in the house. The only con in the purchase of this unit is the need to replace cooking utensiles with ferous metal. Gave away two sets of high quality stainless steel bacause I could not use them on the new cook top.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product BUT............... make sure you get pots and pans FOR this product. You can only use made for INDUCTION POTS AND PANS. It will say on the box of the pots and pans if it can be used for it. I had an induction stove which was wonderful once we found the pots and pans for it. It didnt say anything about it in the product description.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Works very well. Great features. Slight hum when in use but not bothersome unless you are very noise sensitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much better than electric We bought this cooktop from Home Depot about 1 year ago. It's been holding up well. My wife hated the electric cooktop and wanted gas but our house wasn't piped for gas. It would have cost quite a bit to run gas. But she loves this induction cooktop. Some nice things about induction: food doesn't stick to the cooktop. Since the cooktop doesn't get as hot as a standard electric cooktop, spilled foods don't cook onto the cooktop. That makes for easy cleaning. There is some heat transfer from the pan to the cooktop but it's nowhere near as hot as an electric. Heats like gas: The reaction time to when the pan starts heating is almost instantaneous. You put the pan on the top and you can feel the heat start to build up. . Turns off automatically when you take the pot off the top. It looks as good today as it did when we first bought it. Some downsides that are common to all induction is that you have to have special pans. They have to be magnetic. If a magnet doesn't stick to the pot, base, it won't work on this cooktop. They don't have to be expensive. We found some pans from Ikea that work fine. For the 36" cooktop, you'll need a 50 amp line. For the 30" it's a 40 amp. The hook up was simple. 3 wires and you're done. Anyone competent with electrical should be able to hook it up for you if you're not comfortable with it (turn your breaker off).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE it. Being a “real” cook and having to deal with an electric stove has always been a frustration. With the induction cooktop, I get the best of worlds, gas and electric. It heats up immediately and cools down just as fast. No more pots boiling over. It does make an interesting hum when it’s on but it’s well worth it to be able to boil water in 2 min. I have not experienced any of the issues with scratching others have commented on. When this stove dies, I will buy another one, no question about it [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't have to have a 50 amp breaker The breaker is there to protect the wire not the appliance. You can run this on a 30 or 40 amp breaker. you just won't be able to run all burners on high at the same time without tripping the breaker. But who does that anyway?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from ok product, horrible support looks good works good. i like induction. after about 8 months this unit would turn on by itself. called ge and a repairman was sent out. they would not cover repair as there was a scratch on the serial number( likely from instillation) they could not read the full number. even though i had the receipt(proof of purchase) they would not cover repair. so i am out $2000. will stay away from ge from now on. i am shocked that ge wont cover this as it can burn someones house down. already had a couple of pans burn up.
