Answer:
You would have problems if your pan was bigger than the burner, but not smaller. See pic attached. The small pan works great on the larger burner and only the area where the pan sits, gets hot.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in the GE Profile Induction Cooktop in Black with 5 Elements Model # PHP960DMBB.
Each cooking element requires a Minimum pan size. If the pan is properly centered, and of the correct material, but is too small for the cooking element, the element cannot be activated. The display will flash “F” along with the power level selected. Cookware larger than the element ring may be used; however, heat will only occur above the element. For best results, the cookware must make Full contact with the glass surface.
Place a pan matching the size of the induction element over the selected indicator ring. Compatible cookware for induction cooktops should be made of magnetic stainless steel, cast iron (works well but may scratch the glass unless it is porcelain coated), enameled steel or a combination of these materials. Pans should have a flat bottom and be at least 5 inches across the bottom.

Profile 36 in. Smooth Top Electric Induction Cooktop in Stainless Steel with 5 Elements is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 170.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing cooktop! We purchased this cooktop in February for our kitchen remodel. It is an amazing induction cooktop. Heats quickly and evenly, and cools immediately. Love the five burners of various sizes as well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Induction I've only lived in homes with the standard electric cook tops so I can't comment on induction vs. gas. Having said that I will never go back to standard cook tops after using induction. It boggles my mind how fast I bring a giant pot from room temp. to a running boil. The home I purchased had this cooktop already installed so I didn't shop around or compare features but this model seems to be more than sufficient. I should add the cook top is a lot easier to clean as only the pan/pot gets hot and not the element; eliminating much of the 'cooked on' junk you usually have to scrub.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome cooktop My wife hates electric cooktops. She loves this cooktop. She loves the even cooking when frying. It cleans up easily since any food that spills doesn't get cooked onto the surface. The surface will get hot as the pan will transfer heat back onto the cooktop but it's nowhere near as hot as an electric cooktop. You do have to buy compatible cookware so keep that in mind if you're buying it. Aluminum won't work. If you can stick a magnet to the base, it should work. We bought some compatible pots and pans from Ross and Ikea so they don't have to be expensive. Some cheaper pans will emit a mild hum (sounds like the quiet hum from a florescent light fixture). It's not loud though. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't read about it first. Cast Iron will work as well. We did some tests with it. After putting a pan on the cooktop and turning it on, I could feel heat emanating from the pan in about 10 seconds. We were able to bring a 3 qt sauce pan filled with water to a full boil in about 3 minutes and a 16 qt stock pot to a full boil in about 13 minutes. If you're buying the 36", they require a 50 amp circuit so make sure you're wired for that. The 30" requires a 40 amp circuit. The instructions for hooking it up were clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice unit. Easy to install and use. Very happy with safety features. I purchased this unit as a replacement for a GE Profile five burner cook top. The old cook top was radient heat and stayed hot after use. The induction cook top cools much faster and is much safer to use with younger children in the house. The only con in the purchase of this unit is the need to replace cooking utensiles with ferous metal. Gave away two sets of high quality stainless steel bacause I could not use them on the new cook top.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best cooktop ever! This is my first cooktop...although I have owned and used a variety of ranges (gas, smooth top and coil) this is my first induction. I love it! Even if you don't cook often, I highly recommend a 36" as the extra space is invaluable. Induction cooks quickly, does not overheat the kitchen when you have several pots cooking simultaneoulsy, cleans easily, and shuts off automatically one you remove the pan from the heating element. Special pots/pans are required....however, it gave me the excuse to invest in a good set of cookware that will last more than a lifetime. The cook top is easy to use and easy to clean - however I would recommend purchasing the cooktop without the stainless steel trim. I felt that it was not necessary to match the other stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and would not catch slight crumbs. I really can't comment on the price as it was an upgrade appliance when I had my house built...I am sure the builders charged me more than retail. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product BUT............... make sure you get pots and pans FOR this product. You can only use made for INDUCTION POTS AND PANS. It will say on the box of the pots and pans if it can be used for it. I had an induction stove which was wonderful once we found the pots and pans for it. It didnt say anything about it in the product description.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Works very well. Great features. Slight hum when in use but not bothersome unless you are very noise sensitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much better than electric We bought this cooktop from Home Depot about 1 year ago. It's been holding up well. My wife hated the electric cooktop and wanted gas but our house wasn't piped for gas. It would have cost quite a bit to run gas. But she loves this induction cooktop. Some nice things about induction: food doesn't stick to the cooktop. Since the cooktop doesn't get as hot as a standard electric cooktop, spilled foods don't cook onto the cooktop. That makes for easy cleaning. There is some heat transfer from the pan to the cooktop but it's nowhere near as hot as an electric. Heats like gas: The reaction time to when the pan starts heating is almost instantaneous. You put the pan on the top and you can feel the heat start to build up. . Turns off automatically when you take the pot off the top. It looks as good today as it did when we first bought it. Some downsides that are common to all induction is that you have to have special pans. They have to be magnetic. If a magnet doesn't stick to the pot, base, it won't work on this cooktop. They don't have to be expensive. We found some pans from Ikea that work fine. For the 36" cooktop, you'll need a 50 amp line. For the 30" it's a 40 amp. The hook up was simple. 3 wires and you're done. Anyone competent with electrical should be able to hook it up for you if you're not comfortable with it (turn your breaker off).
