Answer:
You would have problems if your pan was bigger than the burner, but not smaller. See pic attached. The small pan works great on the larger burner and only the area where the pan sits, gets hot.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in the GE Profile Induction Cooktop in Black with 5 Elements Model # PHP960DMBB.
Each cooking element requires a Minimum pan size. If the pan is properly centered, and of the correct material, but is too small for the cooking element, the element cannot be activated. The display will flash “F” along with the power level selected. Cookware larger than the element ring may be used; however, heat will only occur above the element. For best results, the cookware must make Full contact with the glass surface.
Place a pan matching the size of the induction element over the selected indicator ring. Compatible cookware for induction cooktops should be made of magnetic stainless steel, cast iron (works well but may scratch the glass unless it is porcelain coated), enameled steel or a combination of these materials. Pans should have a flat bottom and be at least 5 inches across the bottom.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this cooktop I was able to buy this cooktop for about 800 less than the full price as it has been discontinued. I had only read about the plus points of induction cooking and when remodeling my kitchen gas was not an option in my area. So I bought this model and I learned right away from a friend that has one that to know if you have the right pan or not, Simple way to know, if a magnet sticks to the bottom of your pan then your pan will cook correctly. I had to give a way a couple of my pans but I use all-clad and every one of them work beautifully! The even and quick heating still has me in total amazement! love it! will never have anything else. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Cooktop Fast, powerful, clean, great looking. I was skeptical until I read the CR reviews giving the highest scores ever for any cooktops to the induction models. (Only negative is the stainless frame that got scratched up in the first week of use - look at the frameless model.) I was a gas-only cook before; now, I wouldn't do anything but induction. Kitchen stays cool no matter how many boiling pots we have going. Almost no lost heat and energy to the atmosphere as with gas. All the energy goes directly to the pan. Low heat is constant and as low as you want to go. Low boil is foolproof. Simmer is perfect, no guessing. My spaghetti sauce simmers for hours at exactly the temperature I want. Impressed with this cooktop daily. Really unless you must have the look of gas, you have to check out induction. September 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Induction cooking is the best!! I love it, especially with the correct pans. I'm on my third set, trying to find the best for my preferences. I tried the tri-ply stainless, but due to sticking, it drove me crazy and I didn't want to re-learn how to cook with all stainless. I tried the non-stick pans with only the stainless base & they stink. They took too long to heat up and seemed to heat up only at the stainless base. I finally found stainless with a non-stick coating and now I am VERY pleased. The cooktop works like a dream and the clean up is extremely easy. The simmer (L) function will keep food warm for hours and not overcook. The high (H) function will boil your water in seconds to minutes (depending on the pan size). I don't like knobs, so the touch feature is better, but your fingers must be dry to use them. Any moisture cancels out your touch and they won't work. It would've been nice to have the burners outlined a little more. You can barely tell where the burner is, unless a light is shining down on the cooktop. I'm not sure about the efficiency but assume it will be better than electric. The built in timer is a nice bonus feature. My only wish is that we would've gotten this sooner. September 20, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do Not Buy Within the first 30 days of owning this cooktop it broken. Repairman came out 3 days later and informed us the computer system was completely shot. GE refused to replace the cooktop and would only replace the computer part. The computer part wasn't in stock and would take 30 days to come in. After days of constant arguing (and i mean constant arguing) they said they would either find the part or replace the cooktop within 7 days. The part didn't arrive so a new cooktop was installed another 7 days later. So this cooktop has spent more time broken then working - great product GE. The experience with customer service and the total product failure made me call Home Depot and take back the GE dishwasher we had just installed because the water wasn't draining fully and i can never trust GE or their customer service department. so that entire GE kitchen suite was sent back and i went with LG and boy am i happy. so heed my advice skip everything with a GE label and just go straight to LG October 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So much better than electric We bought this cooktop from Home Depot about 1 year ago. It's been holding up well. My wife hated the electric cooktop and wanted gas but our house wasn't piped for gas. It would have cost quite a bit to run gas. But she loves this induction cooktop. Some nice things about induction: food doesn't stick to the cooktop. Since the cooktop doesn't get as hot as a standard electric cooktop, spilled foods don't cook onto the cooktop. That makes for easy cleaning. There is some heat transfer from the pan to the cooktop but it's nowhere near as hot as an electric. Heats like gas: The reaction time to when the pan starts heating is almost instantaneous. You put the pan on the top and you can feel the heat start to build up. . Turns off automatically when you take the pot off the top. It looks as good today as it did when we first bought it. Some downsides that are common to all induction is that you have to have special pans. They have to be magnetic. If a magnet doesn't stick to the pot, base, it won't work on this cooktop. They don't have to be expensive. We found some pans from Ikea that work fine. For the 36" cooktop, you'll need a 50 amp line. For the 30" it's a 40 amp. The hook up was simple. 3 wires and you're done. Anyone competent with electrical should be able to hook it up for you if you're not comfortable with it (turn your breaker off). November 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Top notch Easy to install. Works great very attractive . This was a Gift for my daughter and she loves it! It may cost a little more then others but well worth it. DH from West Virgina December 17, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by ok product, horrible support looks good works good. i like induction. after about 8 months this unit would turn on by itself. called ge and a repairman was sent out. they would not cover repair as there was a scratch on the serial number( likely from instillation) they could not read the full number. even though i had the receipt(proof of purchase) they would not cover repair. so i am out $2000. will stay away from ge from now on. i am shocked that ge wont cover this as it can burn someones house down. already had a couple of pans burn up. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing cooktop! We purchased this cooktop in February for our kitchen remodel. It is an amazing induction cooktop. Heats quickly and evenly, and cools immediately. Love the five burners of various sizes as well! October 3, 2016
