Answer:
Hello JD,
I am happy to help. We suggest going with a GE Genuine Part, as we cannot be certain if the aftermarket parts are of the same quality and fit. Thank you for checking with us.

Hi huggie-this is Sue from GE Appliances. The GE PROFILE™ SERIES 36" TELESCOPIC DOWNDRAFT SYSTEM PVB98STSS must be vented outdoors. We do not offer a model that vents indoors. Thanks for checking with us!

Why do so many people have the same complaint, including me?

This question is from Profile 36 in. Telescopic Downdraft System in Black

If more than one person is complaining about the same problem then the problem is the product. My telescopic downdraft does not raise straight. It takes multiple attempts to get it straight and most of the time I have to pull it up to assist. It is three years old and no longer covered under the warranty. And because I live in a rural place GE will not service it. I also have to pay for the service and repair. Appliances should last more than three years. I've talked to multiple people at GE and no one will help me. This is outrageous considering the cost of the appliance. Not a fan and will not recommend this product to anyone.

Answer:
It is definitely a common design flaw. Not only does it come up slanted. After two years in service, the unit is now making clicking noise when it goes down. Check out the video.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad design - downdraft vent system We built a new house. All our appliances are GE. We have had nothing but trouble with the downdraft system. We had to have the drive motor replaced before we could even use the system. The unit raises slowly, must push the on/off button 3 times before it raises all the way up. The system raises crooked and is crooked when all the way up. GE has opted to buy back the vent system instead of replacing the system. We live in a rural areal and have had difficulty getting someone to work on GE appliances. My concern is future repairs. I bought all appliances with a extended warranty and GE won't send anyone out to repair the appliances. April 17, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Vent Comes Up Slanted, Sometimes Not Running We had this downdraft vent for less than a year. Within a year, the vent had been coming up slanted (see photo - check the bottom horizontal line of the vent and compare that to the cooktop to see how much it slanted.) It got worse, lately the vent did not come up completely, so the fan wouldn't run. We had to bring it down and up couple times to get it working. A GE serviceman came by and said that he saw many units with this issues for this model. All they could do was to order a kit to clean it up, and it MIGHT fix it. But there was no guarantee. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Broke down 2 times in a year It has been malfunctioning after only a few months of use. Then it completely stopped working. GE came under the manufacturer warranty, fixed it (after ordering a part blablabla). A few months later, broke down again, it was just over a year so the protection plan kicked in. After many weeks of waiting for a part and many phone calls to try to understand what was going down, they left a voice mail saying they won't fix. Called HD back, nobody knew about anything, couldn't know more. yes they reimbursed me, but I have to pay for a new install, and I am stuck with the same model as I have granite countertops. And the on/off button being separating from the unit is completely stupide. It needs an extra cut out in your countertop. June 16, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do NOT purchase I give this item zero stars. I've had it two months and it never comes up straight. GE states it's an installation problem, but their technicians can't fix it. I've had it serviced twice. Both times they claims it's the grease, and both times they replace parts (and grease), but still comes up crooked. Came with David Weekly home. So I didn't have a choice. If you do, don't choose this piece of junk! Go with another brand! David Weekly is STILL trying to make this right for us. March 20, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Installed a month ago-works great as advertised. looks nice too! February 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad Bought this along with a new GE cooktop. It has never worked and technicians have been unable to fix it after 3 try's so far. November 11, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Easy install, went for this one over the stainless steel finish which wasn't worth the extra $$ and would stand out on dark counter tops. I think downdrafts are overpriced in general but home depot had the best price, quick shipping and great service. April 13, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love it! Super easy to use!  sometimes our up and down button gets a little stuck and takes a press or two to get it going, but the button has always been slightly broken, I just didn't take the time to have GE send me a replacement. Hides very nicely under the counter and works great with the GE 36" induction cooktop. Sometimes one of the sides scrapes when retracting up or down, but I have to believe this was more of an installation issue.Very powerful fan! Dimensions to install this and the cooktop were confusing online, but have the appliance in hand when they are installing the countertop and make any field cuts where necessary. My kitchen is so high tech! but doesn't look it! August 30, 2013
