In my case, there was no internal filter. I installed an exterior filter on my GE side by side. Hung it on the wall behind the fridge. Good luck.

Hello George,

Some side by side models do offer the Smartwater filter that is located inside the refrigerator.
The water filter cartridge location may vary by model. The majority of water filters are found in the back upper right corner of the refrigerator compartment. The SmartWater Filtration Systems used in GE refrigerators filter both ice and water. The carbon block filters (MWF/GWF/HWF & GSWF/MSWF) reduce chlorine, odor, lead, cysts and improve taste.
I hope this is helpful!

I have this filter under my sink and the water comes out of a spigot that sits next to the kitchen faucet. The water flow was fine until I replaced the old filter with the new filter. Now the water flow is really minimal. What might be the problem?

Answer:
The tabs on the base that retain & set the filter may be worn. This does not allow the filter to fully open the internal valve. Check by manually turning the filter while operating the water dispenser (2 people may be required). If this is the case the base will need to be replaced.

Hello jen7263,
This is Michelle with GE Appliances and I am happy to help. If you haven't done so already, we recommend checking the installation by uninstalling the filter and reattach plumbing without filter in place. Check water flow to see if normal. If it is, then re-install filter to test again. If still slow water flow, we must recommend replacing filter. Thank you for checking.

I have the GE Smartwater under sink dual filtration system and it requires two filters. Amazon sells the same product for the same price (as of 12/2015) but as a two pack. Is this product priced for a single filter replacement?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality Water Filter This is a replacement filter that I use for my icemaker. I choose it when I first moved in to my condo several years ago. I have located so it is easy to change and flush. Works great July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works great This is a replacement filter for the drinking water in my RV. The water at the campground is terrible! This filter does the job of taking out the nasty taste and smells. I have used this system for several years. June 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Really nice filter. So far so good!! The filter was easy to install. Water taste is good so, next replacement will be with same filter at sure. May 18, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dunno how the price doubled in the last year for some - it's only a dollar or so higher than it ever has been for me, but it's a good product++ It has always been expensive - each filter is $33 or $34 where I live and always has been for the 10 or so years that I've had the unit. I would have done back flips to have found filters for half this, but it was never the case for me. Anyway, the water quality is very good coming out of the fridge, and there is no decrease at all in water pressure with the filter on. It's never caused a problem, and it's so simple to change. I am very happy with the unit, but I will agree that the filters are way too expensive - If they were around $20 I would change them more often, but as it is, I only do it twice a year since there are just the two of us, and that seems to be adequate.
