That's probably why they are becoming tuff to find...Good luck

Answer:
These GE filter units can seize up and be very hard to open.
What I have been doing is draping a piece of cloth, like a washcloth over the filter, (to prevent scratching) and use a small, adjusting (tightening) band style oil filter wrench to open up the housing.
This sort of oil filter wrench come in several sizes, you'll need a small.
Hope this helps.

The secret is to not tighten it too much. The gasket is great and eliminates leaks. Just need to hand tighten.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Goodbye to itchy skin I've been using the GE shower filtration system for years now. It works to remove the chlorine completely. When suddenly I find myself fighting itchy and dry skin I realize that it's time to change the filter. I'm a 78 year old female and it's a cinch for me to change the filter myself. Low cost, effective, just wish it were still available in the store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for regular Filtration I purchased this item to solve an issue of rotten egg smell in the water of our rented apartment. The smell is due to H2S produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria. The increase or decrease of water flow in the river that runs in front of our house correlated directly with the increase or decrease of H2O smell. Even though an oxidation filter is required for H2O containing water, I gave this filter a try. II was surprised the product worked great! The smell was gone and the water felt "soft". Later on the smell returned, but changing the filter took care of it. I guess if it worked well for me it should work incredibly well for someone who does not have metal-reducing bacteria in their water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Delivers softer water This filter works great to soften the hard Phoenix,AZ water. The only problem I had was unscrewing the housing to get the cartridge(filter)in. It took 3 guys at Home Depot to break loose the threads of the housing(it comes way too tight from the factory). Overall, this is a very good filter.
