That's probably why they are becoming tuff to find...Good luck

Answer:
These GE filter units can seize up and be very hard to open.
What I have been doing is draping a piece of cloth, like a washcloth over the filter, (to prevent scratching) and use a small, adjusting (tightening) band style oil filter wrench to open up the housing.
This sort of oil filter wrench come in several sizes, you'll need a small.
Hope this helps.

The secret is to not tighten it too much. The gasket is great and eliminates leaks. Just need to hand tighten.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good shower filter Works well; have been using for 2 yrs. Hard to unsrcew canister when changing out; use butterknife handle to tap sharply all around it to loosen it. May 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Goodbye to itchy skin I've been using the GE shower filtration system for years now. It works to remove the chlorine completely. When suddenly I find myself fighting itchy and dry skin I realize that it's time to change the filter. I'm a 78 year old female and it's a cinch for me to change the filter myself. Low cost, effective, just wish it were still available in the store. May 17, 2016
