Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you find a great replacement microwave. Yes, this microwave would be a good replacement for your current microwave. In fact, all of our 30" Spacemaker over-the-range microwaves are designed to be installed in the same standard upper cabinet space (30" min. width, 12" min.-13" max. depth, 66" min. mounting height), so any of our new models would fit in Read More

Two Toggle Bolts Instead of Four

November 24, 2014
We're looking to purchase model JVM1950DRBB to replace our model JNM1851DMBB which stopped heating a few weeks ago. When reviewing the installation material for both models, I noticed that the newer model JVM1950DRBB requires 2 toggle bolts, 2 wood screws, and 2 top self-aligning screws while our older model JNM1851DMBB required 4 toggle bolts, 2 wood screws, and 3 top self-aligning screws. Since they weigh the same (55 lb vs 56 lb), I was wondering why the newer model requires fewer fasteners. Also, are the top self-aligning screw holes in the same place for these two models? I'm hoping we won't have to drill new holes. Lastly, has anyone had any trouble reusing toggle bolt holes? It looks like holes A and B will match up with the old wall plate toggle bolt holes. I wouldn't want the new microwave to be less secure because we have to reuse these holes (although the newer toggle bolts are thankfully slightly larger in diameter). Thanks!!

Hello David,
This is Joyce from GE. The XL1800 isn't a model number it just signifies that you have an extra large oven cavity. All of our current 30" models that start with the letters JVM, CVM, PVM, PNM, and SCA will normally fit into the same area. The dimensions may vary, but just slightly.
These models all have a built-in fan underneath the microwave and are designed to be installed over a range or cooktop.
JVM's require a minimum 66" mounting height from the floor to top of the microwave. JVM models may be mounted higher than 66" from floor, but the further the microwave is from the cooktop, the more the vent draw capability is affected. The 66" from the floor dimension will allow approximately 14"-16" between the cooktop and the bottom front of the microwave. On the newer JVM's which are taller, the minimum would be 13 1/2". Please note that it is not critical that this 13 1/2"/14"-16" figure is met exactly. But it is the 66" from floor to top of microwave dimension that should be followed. If there is less than 66", the warranty is void if problems occur due to heat or steam from the cooktop surface below the microwave. Another way to look at it is to keep 30" between the top of the range and bottom of the cabinet that the JVM attaches to.
It is also important to know that you will need to use the mounting brackets and hardware that come with the new microwave. The mounting kits have changed over the years and are not interchangeable. Current models are installed with the use of a mounting plate. There is a key slot for flat bottomed cabinets and self-directed tapping screws.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 35 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good microwave This unit works so much better than our old 19-year-old one. Seems to heat quickly and evenly. And it's very quiet. It has a lot more bells and whistles then we're used to, so we're still learning how to use them all. Guess I wish the design was a little sleeker, but overall, it's very nice. May 28, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not Happy I've had this microwave for less than 2 years and it worked fine but all of a sudden it stays on when you shut the door. I've tried several different things to make it work and I have not had any luck September 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Packed with features, needs more light. If you read many of the other reviews you will see many of the features such as the 4 fan speeds, and such. Although others have commented on the loudness of the unit, I have not found it obtrusive. One complaint that I have is the range lights. They are woefully underpowered. This could be because I have bright under counter lighting next to it, but when I tried to cook using the light on the microwave, I had to turn on the under counter lights to project adequate light on the range surface. Because of this I gave it a "good" instead of an excellent. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great features! Love the interior, it is so easy to keep clean! Love all the features, especially the MyPlate option. August 15, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Have had bad experience Features are nice enough; although the fan was never really beefy. But the unit was problematic from the start-- would periodically go loopy, flash an error and stop. Now it died in the middle of a routine cooking exercise. No power, no light, no nothing. Breaker didn't trip so suspect the power supply is gone. Will never buy a GE appliance again, I think. December 15, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A good purchase I replaced a micro wave oven purchased over 20 years ago with this GE appliance. While I'll have to agree with the party that said the popcorn popping button needs something to be desired, I can only say that the oven will do almost anything one can imagine. I really like the oven and I'm sorry to see that they have discontinued making this model.  Purchase it before you no longer can. October 18, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product with a sleek design Purchased this to go with our new GE range . This microwave is so sleek looking and the dark interior is so easy to clean compared to the old white interiors. It has done everything so far perfectly and we couldn't be more pleased with our choice. The only thing I have to say negative is that it is a little bit noisy compared to my old one.If your looking for a new microwave consider this one. you will not be dissapointed. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] February 5, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Purchase This microwave can only be described as a mistake. I had a GE that I loved and needed to replace. This one is a waste. I replace light bulbs every other month. Sensor reheat has never worked as well as the old GE. Poor quality. Run. Run quickly March 9, 2014
