I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this dishwasher from Home Depot. I was amazed the first time I ran it. I thought it was not working because I could not hear it. I had to turn off the TV and be very quiet before I could hear it! I only have two complaints: 1, I wish GE would have picked an LED with more contrast or more colors on the front of the door. The LED goes from yellowish-green (running), to green when finished. G.E., please use a tri-color LED next time. Yellow = washing, Red = drying, Green = finished. Just a suggestion. 2, When you open the door after drying is complete, some water drips out of the vent on the front of the door onto the floor. No big deal, but I'm surprised G.E. did not notice that during R&D.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by szasam Still having issues
We pre-ordered this dishwasher with great hopes. So far it has not worked. We had Home Depot install on 12/7 and noticed that dishes did not get clean with multiple attempts. We had to call GE support they sent out a technician on the 17th who changed out the pump and the motor. He noticed it still wasn't working so scheduled someone else to come out on Christmas eve. He changed out more parts and still it doesn't look like it works right. I agree this might just be a fluke with the one I bought but I have a sour taste when dealing with this product.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Sherry Use Liquid!!! Don't use the tablets!
We used the dishwasher and washed dishes two to three times trying to get it to clean. I used two cascade tablets and it was better. I was about to send it back and decided to use liquid detergent. When I looked the dishes where clean. My advice use liquid the tablets do not work in this machine! I think that the dispensing of the tablet and the amount of water for this energy efficient model just doesn't work together. Just my opinion. We will keep for now. I think it's finally going to work.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Eric "Known" issues with this unit
Follow-up from last review. Techs fixed squeaking. Also informed me that "their are known issues with this unit". The staining CANNOT be resolved by them. However, if you leave the front silverware basket on the left empty, and the front 1/4 left of botton rack empty, this will help rinse off the detergent. This will also cut down on your efficietcy. You cannot run it fully loaded. Customer Service was terrible. 3 trips by a tech, no follow-ups and dealt with numerous people instead of just one. This my last GE product. I was not happy with the customer service. Very poor. I do not recommend this unit. Remember "there are KNOWN issues with this unit".

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by j123 Probably good as any other out there in the price range
Overall, our dishwasher model GDT550HGDBB is fine. Been using it for three months now. It is certainly quieter than the 20 year old Kenmore it replaced, which sounded like a lawnmower running.
That being said, the Kenmore *was* better at getting the dishes clean the first time. We have had to run many things through more than one cycle with this one. But from talking with other people with similar models, that's just kind of how things are now. Maybe the quietness/efficiency diminishes performance? New purchasers should also know that cycle times are a lot longer than they used to be with older units (think like a front load washing machine)--2 hours for a load of dishes. Drains and fills water like 6 or 7 times instead of just pre-rinse, wash, rinse.
Maybe higher price points are run quicker and clean better?? No idea.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by tonibaloni Quiet, gets 'em clean, a little small inside
The interior tub of this d/washer is a little smaller than the LG previously owned. I'm looking for 10+ years of use, so time will tell. LG gave me 5yrs and i repaired it twice. Hybrid d/w means plastic tub and st/steel door, no problem. This may be where $200 differential in price is created. I didn't really care about steam options. Low noise while operating was high on my needs. Old LG was rated 54 db, this GE is rated under 50 db, and there is not much difference. Another high priority was filter system cleaning. The old LG did not allow fine filter cleaning with actually replacing the filter, for $50 each time. That was the death of that d/washer in this household.
negatives: I would keep the cutlery rack on the inside of the racks, not on the face; just one big one on either the upper or lower. the lower rack bangs hard when rolling it out onto the door, the wheels on the lower rack will be the first thing to need replace.
positives: it is quiet, it does clean, although it had issues with the free packets of soap that came with it, similar to other reviews. we have no issues with dissolving the soap when using liquid soap. this model allows diversity in cycle length of time, 30, 70, 110, 170 or there about, full range. LG was 120 min wash or 15 minute rinse, only, no flexibility.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Bobb Overall good purchase and value
So far, we have had none of the technical/quality issues that other individuals have posted about. Home Depot was fantastic: providing the best price, with quick (free) shipping and haul-away. Overall, the dishwasher works extremely well. It cleans and dries SIGNIFICANTLY better than any of our previous dishwashers, and we are very pleased with the overall performance.
This dishwasher Holds all of our dishes very well, and in good positioning for cleaning (much better than other dishwashers we've had). For the most part, we really like the design of the racks, and the size of dishes & cups that it can hold. We really like the sanitizing and steaming features, as well as the time-delay feature.
A few minor annoyances exist with the dishwasher:
- Installation instructions were (at times) vague, and poorly written. Not really a big deal if you are even slightly mechanically-inclined, but an annoyance non-the-less. This caused me to spend about an hour longer than necessary (total install time: 2 hrs)
- Not sure if this is common with all new tall-tub dishwashers, but the angle & location of the water inlet valve made it difficult to install the water line. It was quite a challenge to get a wrench on this fitting in order to tighten properly.
- The bottom rack has the silverware basket hanging off the front. If you put too many pieces of silverware in this basket, while the main part of the rack remains empty, the rack has a tendancy to want to tip when pulling it out. Very rarely an issue for us, as we almost always have dishes in the main part of the rack
- We found the small baskets on the upper rack very useful to hold things like sippy-cup parts, and other small things. Unfortunately, these baskets are a little small, and are somewhat difficult to stick your hands in there to get something that's in the bottom of the basket.
- The tines on the very back of the bottom rack are fairly widely spaced. This is very useful for larger plates, and pots/pans, but can be an annoyance when trying to fit smaller items.
- No true "rinse only" selection, which would be nice to have considering that we really only run the dishwasher every 2-3 days.
Overall, we were more interested in having a reasonably priced dishwasher that can perform well. We feel that the performance/price of this particular dishwasher outweighs the minor annoyances listed aove. So far, we are very pleased with our purchase.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nici Awesome dishwasher!
I replaced a builder-grade dishwasher that still worked fine, but was noisy. Since it's next to the dining/living room, it made talking or listening to TV difficult. This dishwasher is SO quiet, you can't hear it running. The top rack has it's own spray arm and fits taller glasses. Two separate silverware racks have slots to separate each utensil. They are compartmentalized to hold smaller items safely with lids. Two bottom racks can snap out, allowing for large pots and pans to lay flat and keep posts from scratching up the inside of them. All the indicator lights are easy to read at the top of the door. I can set a timer to start it up to 3 hours later, and run it in the middle of the night when electricity rates are cheaper. Best investment. Since it's an energy saver, I can't wait to see my next water and electric bills for my savings.
