After doing research on many different brands and models of dishwashers, I found that all of the cycles are extremely long. I'm surprised you have one that short, usually they are 90 minutes or more. I was concerned about energy efficiency, but apparently they have to go long enough to get the dishes clean...

I dont think so. It has to do with the efficiency of the units, and less water. The normal cycle is 90 minutes. I put it on at night or in the monring and elt it run. So doesnt bother me.

There is no way to make it shorter and clean the dishes. All new dishwashers, to meet energy star requirements, take longer to wash. Some cycles can last as long as four hours depending on the options you select.

This is a great dishwasher. Enjoy!

So many H.E. DW's require rinse aid... I'm returning a Whirlpool b/c it WILL NOT dry without rinse aid. Are all machines built so badly that they require an additional product to make them work properly?

Hello Wdawg,
This is Donna with GE and I am happy to address your concerns with the Rinse Aid.
To get the best drying performance from any brand dishwasher, the following steps are important. GE and other manufactures have always recommended the use of Rinse Aid. It is not required but the performance and results can be effected.
* Water entering the dishwasher should be between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit for best wash and dry performance.
* Use "Heated dry". This feature adds heat to promote drying.
* Use rinse Aid
Automatic dishwashing detergents are now phosphate-free to comply with various state regulations that became effective July 1, 2010. This will affect the cleaning performance. GE recommends either Electrasol®, Cascade® or Cascade Complete® detergents and a rinse aid, such as Jet Dry®
Rinse agent causes the water to flow off the dishes more quickly which reduces water spotting and improves drying. In hard water areas, rinse agent is important to use.
A white film on glassware, dishware and the interior of the dishwasher can be caused by phosphate-free dishwasher detergent also.
The easiest ways to remove a white film are below.
* LemiShine: following instructions on the package. Can be purchased from GE Parts- part number WX10X10019 or at the local supermarket.
* Use a vinegar rinse: Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the dishwasher just after the detergent cup opens and let the dishwasher complete its cycle. This may be repeated several times a year if needed.
I hope this helps. Should you have additional questions, please let us know. Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 769 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazingly quiet I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this dishwasher from Home Depot. I was amazed the first time I ran it. I thought it was not working because I could not hear it. I had to turn off the TV and be very quiet before I could hear it! I only have two complaints: 1, I wish GE would have picked an LED with more contrast or more colors on the front of the door. The LED goes from yellowish-green (running), to green when finished. G.E., please use a tri-color LED next time. Yellow = washing, Red = drying, Green = finished. Just a suggestion. 2, When you open the door after drying is complete, some water drips out of the vent on the front of the door onto the floor. No big deal, but I'm surprised G.E. did not notice that during R&D. June 15, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great dishwasher but needs better manual This dishwasher is very quiet and cleans great! It has lots of features like removable tines and lots of space. The problem is the extra features are not explained in any of the directions and you need to figure them out on your own! Overall the directions were probably written by someone who already knows the product. For example, to fill the detergent dispenser, it says, "Open the compartment" without telling you to push or pull or flip the door and there were no arrows or anything on the compartment itself! I was afraid I was going to break it before I even got to use it! If they improved the manual it would be the best dishwasher! November 12, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by GE GDT55HGD0WW Dishwasher This dishwasher is not recommended, nor is GE dishwashers in general. This unit does not dry dishes at all unless the Jet Dry product is utilized. The dial for the jet dry has to be near max in order to dry, which uses a high amount of that product. Our unit lasted 1 year and 1 week after warranty and the soap dispenser stopped functioning properly, would not open or would open late, leaving the dishes completely covered in soap. Which requires another run to clean off, which run times are well over an hour and a half. January 6, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by "Known" issues with this unit Follow-up from last review. Techs fixed squeaking. Also informed me that "their are known issues with this unit". The staining CANNOT be resolved by them. However, if you leave the front silverware basket on the left empty, and the front 1/4 left of botton rack empty, this will help rinse off the detergent. This will also cut down on your efficietcy. You cannot run it fully loaded. Customer Service was terrible. 3 trips by a tech, no follow-ups and dealt with numerous people instead of just one. This my last GE product. I was not happy with the customer service. Very poor. I do not recommend this unit. Remember "there are KNOWN issues with this unit". April 23, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Probably good as any other out there in the price range Overall, our dishwasher model GDT550HGDBB is fine. Been using it for three months now. It is certainly quieter than the 20 year old Kenmore it replaced, which sounded like a lawnmower running. That being said, the Kenmore *was* better at getting the dishes clean the first time. We have had to run many things through more than one cycle with this one. But from talking with other people with similar models, that's just kind of how things are now. Maybe the quietness/efficiency diminishes performance? New purchasers should also know that cycle times are a lot longer than they used to be with older units (think like a front load washing machine)--2 hours for a load of dishes. Drains and fills water like 6 or 7 times instead of just pre-rinse, wash, rinse. Maybe higher price points are run quicker and clean better?? No idea. April 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet dishwasher This dishwasher has cleaned everything I've put in it very well, even the silverware, which can get a little crowded sometimes. The silverware baskets are very user friendly, adjusting for different kinds of items. So far none of my plastic stuff has melted in the drying cycle either. I also really like the upper racks that fold down to protect your stemware. The bottom rack is a good distance from the top, so my large pans and bowls fit in easily. This dishwaser cleans about as well as a dishwasher can. November 30, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good dishwasher I have had this dishwasher for two months, and on the whole I am pleased with it. It gets the dishes very clean. I like having two silverware baskets. The baskets are also handy for items like small plastic lids. But the silverware baskets stay wet even after everything else is dry, which is annoying. Some people have complained about the tines on the bottom rack being too far apart, but they work well with my dishes. The reason I chose this dishwasher was for the decibel rating, and I have been a little disappointed in the sound level. It is reasonably quiet but I find it hard to believe that it is really only 49 dB. March 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome dishwasher! I replaced a builder-grade dishwasher that still worked fine, but was noisy. Since it's next to the dining/living room, it made talking or listening to TV difficult. This dishwasher is SO quiet, you can't hear it running. The top rack has it's own spray arm and fits taller glasses. Two separate silverware racks have slots to separate each utensil. They are compartmentalized to hold smaller items safely with lids. Two bottom racks can snap out, allowing for large pots and pans to lay flat and keep posts from scratching up the inside of them. All the indicator lights are easy to read at the top of the door. I can set a timer to start it up to 3 hours later, and run it in the middle of the night when electricity rates are cheaper. Best investment. Since it's an energy saver, I can't wait to see my next water and electric bills for my savings. March 5, 2015
