Is this high pitched sound expected?

I could have sworn when I first received the dishwasher, the light was necessary to know it was even running outside of the gentle swishing of water. I received it on 11/25. Now the machine is on it's 4th or 5th run and I'm now noticing a high pitch white noise sound. It is very irritating. What can be done about this?

I've uploaded a short video taken this morning. The high pitch sound is coming from the dishwasher, not other white noise. It stops when I stop the dishwasher and open the door. I can take a video to demonstrate this later.

We've had this machine for a month now and have a similar high-pitched noise when the machine runs. We called in for the technician to check it and he says this is normal.
We're very disappointed with this product. The old GE dishwasher that we replaced was significantly quieter than this one.

Hello - thank you for the responses.
The sound is annoying. Nothing blocking the blades. They can spin freely without hitting anything. (I presume that would make a clunking sound anyway and not a high pitched whir/whine. The whir/whine sound is just loud enough to be irritating but it is not piercing.)

Bill - do you have a link to such a sound baffle? I am not sure whether mine had a secondary one installed - if I do call an independent tech I will have them look. Thanks for the tip! It would be great if that's all this needs.
I am unfortunately not going to be able to get a GE technician out to my place until mid January. They offered to "buy back" the unit - which I think they offered with good intentions, but it is not a good deal for me. I paid $598 during the black Friday sale for this $798 value machine. Now why would I take what they offered me which is less than the value of this unit? That's a $200 loss for me. I want a replacement of this exact unit or I want it diagnosed and repaired by a GE technician before Jan. I just do not feel good about waiting that long - delivery was November 25th. I don't want to hear about that later. They also offered to let me call a local technician and reimburse me, however I am not confident that a local technician will have the understanding of this unit that a GE technician would to diagnose properly. It's a tough spot to be in. Read Less

It dries well. Then heated dry function adds a substantial amount of time to the cycle length though. If you're running it a lot, you might want to go for a more basic more durable model though. I've personally run into a few issues with mine now, and I only run it once or twice a week.

I found the ability to dry very good. You have some options in drying time. There is a fan built into the unit that really accelerates the time to dry, along with the heated dry option. No complaints and I have done up to three loads in one day.
I don't stuff the washer and I think that it tends to clean a bit better at maybe 80% or so of capacity, and certainly dries quicker.

Yes, it can. The person who installed mine said it has much play to lower or raise the machine so that fingers can slide in to control the controls on top. But, I discovered this is not necessary. You operate the controls while the door is open and the dishwasher is programmed to give you time to shut the door before it begins its cycle.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 2038 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stopped draining with 3 inches of dirty, smelly water in basin after less than 4 uses. UGH! Had this beautiful machine less than a week. I say beautiful, as it looks really nice. But it will not do the job at all. As of today, the water will not drain- and filthy water just sprays all over my dishes. I've read through the myriad of review (mostly unhappy) and this is NOT a situation of "a little water helps create the seal" like the HD rep frequently suggests. It is water up to the door level. I'll call HD to fix it, since they installed. I wish we would have gone with a cheaper model- as they are likely easier for self-fixing. I'm super bummed to have a counter loaded with dirty dishes, and a holiday just a few days away. UGH. July 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible purchase The catch mechanism for the door to this dishwasher stopped working after a year. We could get around this by holding the door closed until the cycle started. However, it has now been 20 months and it has gotten much worse -- the door slams down when we try to open it. We paid $100 to have a GE service tech come to look at and they didn't have the parts to fix it but estimated that it would cost over $500 to fix the door. The GE technician recommended that we just buy a new dishwasher. This is a terrible outcome after less than 2 years. June 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quietest Dishwasher Ever Finally got to have a new dishwasher and this one's perfect for us. It's so quiet - we live in a small house and the kitchen opens on the 'great room'. It holds plenty and is so versatile for different types of items: wine glasses for example! All my stuff fits and doesn't need to be handwashed just because. Also like that we can choose to use just the bottom or top rack. July 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Runs great and is super quiet. My wife ran a load of dishes and I never knew the dishwasher was running. The dishwasher cleans the dishes well and they come out sparkling and dry. The look of the dishwasher is modern and sleek and matches our other brushed stainless units. I highly recommend. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product This replaced a 10 year old GE dishwasher that still worked very well but the rack rusted out. The new dishwasher is awesome, much better capacity, quieter and does a better job. We can fit at least 25% more dishes due the the bottom rack being solid with out the void in the middle for the washing arm the old one had. The top rack also accommodates taller glasses. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dishes are soaking wet, and I'm SO bummed! Hi am so mad at myself for letting the Home Depot guy talk me into buying this dishwasher. We have tried everything and still our dishes are wet. We have to dry everything before removing them, even after using booster cycles and adding drying time. It's too much money to pay to be this disappointed. We also hear the high-pitched whirring sound at a certain point in the cycle. Almost sounds like a microphone feedback. It lasts less than 30 seconds, but still is irritating. I would never buy this again. June 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Phenomenal (better than Bosch) Dishwasher!! I have never been in love with a dishwasher, until now! We spent 1200+ on a different dishwasher before this one and it NEVER worked as great as this one does which is half the cost. This GE cleans perfectly, and everything comes out completely dry. Our relatives with Bosch's, a company which for some reason does not believe in heaters to dry their dishes, are VERY jealous of our new machine. They complain regularly about their dirty dishes and are actually talking about scraping their Bosch washer to get this GE after seeing how well it has worked for us. It loads easily, cleans everything, and dries everything. Sparkly clean (and dry) dishes EVERY TIME!. What more could you possibly ask for? Delivery was fast (2 days), installation was perfect and they hauled away the old machine for $15, what a great deal Good job Home Depot. (your direct competitor needed 10+ days for delivery, boooo!) Thanks GE and Thanks Home Depot. Great job all around! :) June 14, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Sorry We purchased this dishwasher GE GDT580SMF7ES We had problems from the first time we used it, first it was leaking at Front door, serviced, (we only use the dishwasher on the weekends), still leaking, another service call, okay now it is fixed, "so the service man said", still leaking, another service call, (now this requires 3 - 4 hours of our time, waiting for them) replace whole front door, then we could not get the Dishwasher to start, We called the store and wanted it Replaced, but they wanted us to try and have it fixed by the Service man, more time waiting for Service Tech, okay we got it to Start, which we find out is very very very hard to get it to start. Bottom line, Sorry we purchased this Dishwasher, the Door Locking Mechanism is very poor quality May 22, 2016
